say: decir QUÉ He said that he was tired.
tell: decir A QUIÉN He told me that he was tired.

say no lleva a la persona sin preposición: ✗ He said me → ✓ He said to me o He told me.

La palabra that se puede omitir: He said (that) he was tired: las dos opciones son correctas.

estilo directo estilo indirecto
"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work here." She said she worked here.
"I will call you." He said he would call me.

Los pronombres también cambian: "I am tired" → He said he was tired.

El estilo directo y el indirecto no se mezclan: o He said, "I am tired.", o He said (that) he was tired.

Errores de los hispanohablantes

escrito para tu idioma
1

said me

«Me dijo que…» → ✗ He said me that… → ✓ He told me that… o He said to me that…

2

told sin persona

«Dijo que estaba ocupada» → ✗ She told that she was busy → ✓ She said that she was busy o She told me that…

3

El sujeto que falta

«Dijo que estaba cansado» → ✗ He said that was tired → ✓ He said that he was tired. «Estaba» no necesita sujeto; en inglés la parte que va detrás de that necesita el suyo: he, she, I.

4

explained me

«Me explicó el problema» → ✗ He explained me the problem → ✓ He explained the problem to me.

He said he was tired. She told me she worked there.

said /sed/: corto, con la vocal /e/, como la «e» de «sed», y no /seɪd/, como se escribe. told /təʊld/: con el diptongo /əʊ/, no con una «o» pura.
