Toisen sanat välitetään kahdella verbillä, eivätkä ne ole keskenään vaihdettavissa.

say — sanoa MITÄ He said that he was tired.
tell — sanoa KENELLE He told me that he was tired.

say ei ota ihmistä ilman prepositiota: ✗ He said me → ✓ He said to me tai He told me.

that-sanan voi jättää pois: He said (that) he was tired — kumpikin on oikein.

Epäsuorassa esityksessä aikamuoto siirtyy askeleen taaksepäin:

"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work here." She said she worked here.
"I will call you." He said he would call me.

Tällä tasolla siirtymä pitää TUNNISTAA, ei vielä muodostaa. Kokonaan se käsitellään B1-tasolla yhdessä kysymysten ja pyyntöjen välittämisen kanssa. Nyt on tärkeää ymmärtää, että was epäsuorassa esityksessä ei tarkoita mennyttä: ihminen puhui nykyhetkestä.

Myös pronominit vaihtuvat: "I am tired" → He said he was tired.

Suoraa ja epäsuoraa esitystä ei sekoiteta: joko He said, "I am tired." tai He said (that) he was tired.

Suomen ”hän kertoi, että…” ei tarvitse kuulijaa, mutta tell tarvitsee aina: told me, told Tom. Tämä on oppitunnin päävirhe.

”Sanoi minulle” tuntuu toimivan kuten give me (”anna minulle”), mutta say ei ota ihmistä suoraan.

Pilkku that-sanan edessä

✗ He said, that he was tired

✓ He said that he was tired

Suomessa ”että” saa aina pilkun, englannissa that ei.

was luetaan menneeksi

Suomessa aikamuoto ei siirry (”hän sanoi, että on väsynyt”), joten He said he was tired näyttää tarkoittavan ”oli väsynyt”. Se tarkoittaa ”on väsynyt”.

Ääntäminen

Epäsuorassa esityksessä paino osuu sisältöön, ei puhumista tarkoittavaan verbiin:

He said he was tired. She told me she worked there.

said /sed/ — lyhyt, vokaalina /e/, ei /eɪ/: ei ”seid”, vaikka say /seɪ/ ja kirjoitusasu houkuttelevat siihen. told /təʊld/ — pitkä diftongi, ei puhdas o.
