文法
18分冠詞は最初の課から出てきました:a と an(A1の第2課)、a と the(A1の第14課)、名前に付く冠詞と go to school(A2の第16課)。
| the |
| a / an |
I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Could you close the door?、the kitchen(この家の)、the station (この町の)。みんなにとって1つしかない:the sun、the sea、the government。あとに続く語で限定されている:the man in the grey coat、the book I'm reading、the history of Wales。
a か an のとき。 There's a new café in our street. She works in a bank. She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! そして「〜につき」の意味で:twice a week、£12 an hour。
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
一方、名詞のあとに続く限定 — of や in で始まる語句、関係詞節 — は、ほとんどいつも特定にします:the art of the Renaissance、the bread you bought。ただし life in London、life in a big city は「そこでの暮らし全般」なので、冠詞はつきません。
I don't eat meat. |
She speaks German. I play tennis. |
We had lunch at one. |
| by のあとの交通手段 | We went by train. |
| 本来の目的で行く場所(A2の第16課) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| 今日から数える next、last | next week, last year |
最上級と序数:the best film、the first time。the same、the only。 おなじみの娯楽の場所:go to the cinema、go to the theatre、listen to the radio — でも watch TV。一日の時間帯:in the morning、in the evening — でも at night。国民全体:the British、the Romans。
another、the other、others — 同じしくみ。
|---|---|---|---|
| another + 単数 | an + other | もう1つの;何か別の | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + 単数 | the + other | 2つのうちのもう一方、残った1つ | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + 複数 | 冠詞なし | ほかの〜全般、ほかにいくつか | Other people think differently. |
| the other + 複数 | the + other | わかっているグループの残り | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | 名詞なし | ほかの人やもの全般 | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | 名詞なし | わかっているものの残り全部 | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
だから other people か、ただ others で、others people とは言いません。
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. |
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. |
そして、my、your、this、that、Tom's は冠詞の位置を占めるので、冠詞といっしょには使いません — my car で、the my car ではありません。
✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

✗ I bought car、✗ She is doctor → ✓ I bought a car、She's a doctor。
✗ I like dog
✓ I like dogs
I like dogs、Books are expensive。
✗ a good news、✗ an information、✗ informations → ✓ some good news、some information。
✗ another people
✓ other people
決めるのは文字ではなく音です:the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — この語は /j/ の音で始まります;the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h は発音しません。同じように a university、でも an hour(A1の第12課)。
冠詞は次の語とつながります: an apple /ənˈæpl/、the end /ðiˈend/。
He's the expert on this.
Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
