I hardly know him.
She's hardly ever at home.
We rarely go to the cinema.
I can hardly hear you.
I've hardly slept this week.

特に can と could と一緒によく使います:I can hardly wait!

It hardly ever snows here. これは rarely と never のあいだの段階です:always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never。

— Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. I don't go very often、I don't really know him。

hardly any、hardly anyone。 There's hardly any milk left. Hardly anyone came. There's hardly anything in the fridge.

この語はもう否定なので、そばに not を置くと二重否定になり、標準的な英語ではそうしません:✗ I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him。 neither … nor(第6課)や nobody(A2の第14課)と同じ規則です。だから hardly のあとは no ではなく any です:hardly any time であって、✗ hardly no time ではありません。

She works hard.
She hardly works.

✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema。

He works hard と He hardly works はそれぞれどういう意味ですか。There's hardly no time はどこがおかしいですか。

I hardly know my neighbours; There's hardly any time.
