Punct dificil

I hardly know him. Aproape că nu-l cunosc.
She's hardly ever at home. Nu e aproape niciodată acasă.
We rarely go to the cinema. Mergem rar la cinema.
I can hardly hear you. Abia te aud.
I've hardly slept this week. Săptămâna asta aproape că n-am dormit.

Ce înseamnă fiecare.

hardly — „aproape că nu, abia” despre grad: I could hardly breathe. — „Abia puteam să respir.” Mai ales des — cu can și could: I can hardly wait! — „Abia aștept!”

hardly ever — „aproape niciodată” despre frecvență: It hardly ever snows here. E treapta dintre rarely și never: always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never.

rarely — „rar”, mai calm: I rarely eat meat. În limbajul livresc același lucru îl spune seldom.

În răspunsul scurt aceste cuvinte stau singure, fără verb: — Do you see your cousins? — Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. Varianta obișnuită de conversație e cu not: I don't go very often, I don't really know him.

hardly any, hardly anyone. Cu any și derivatele lui (A2 #14) iese „aproape deloc”: There's hardly any milk left. — „Aproape că nu mai e lapte.” Hardly anyone came. — „N-a venit aproape nimeni.” There's hardly anything in the fridge.

I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him. E aceeași lege ca la neither … nor (B1 #6) și nobody (A2 #14). De aceea după hardly vine any, nu no: hardly any time, dar nu ✗ hardly no time.

Cum traduci. Românescul „aproape că nu” sau „abia” + verb e hardly + verbul fără not; „aproape niciodată” — hardly ever; „aproape deloc”, „aproape nimeni”, „aproape nimic” — hardly any, hardly anyone, hardly anything.

She works hard. Muncește mult.
She hardly works.

✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema.

Verifică-te. Cum spui „aproape că nu-mi cunosc vecinii”? Ce înseamnă He works hard și ce — He hardly works? Ce nu e în regulă în There's hardly no time?

arată răspunsurile
I hardly know my neighbours; prima — muncește mult și din greu, a doua — aproape că nu muncește; a doua negație e în plus: There's hardly any time.

  • după wish — trecutul, would — doar despre alt om, despre viitorul real — hope?
