I hardly know him. Es viņu gandrīz nepazīstu.
She's hardly ever at home. Viņa gandrīz nekad nav mājās.
We rarely go to the cinema. Mēs reti ejam uz kino.
I can hardly hear you. Es tevi gandrīz nedzirdu.
I've hardly slept this week. Šonedēļ es gandrīz neesmu gulējis.

Ko nozīmē katrs.

hardly — „gandrīz ne-, tik tikko” par pakāpi: I could hardly breathe. — „Es tik tikko varēju paelpot”. Īpaši bieži — ar can un could: I can hardly wait! — „Nevaru vien sagaidīt!”

hardly ever — „gandrīz nekad” par biežumu: It hardly ever snows here. Tas ir pakāpiens starp rarely un never: always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never.

rarely — „reti”, mierīgāk: I rarely eat meat. Grāmatnieciskā valodā to pašu nozīmē seldom.

Īsā atbildē šie vārdi stāv vieni, bez darbības vārda: — Do you see your cousins? — Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. Parastais sarunvalodas variants ir ar not: I don't go very often, I don't really know him.

hardly any, hardly anyone. Ar any un tā atvasinājumiem (A2 #14) iznāk „gandrīz nav”: There's hardly any milk left. — „Piena gandrīz vairs nav”. Hardly anyone came. — „Gandrīz neviens neatnāca”. There's hardly anything in the fridge. — „Ledusskapī gandrīz nekā nav”.

Otru noliegumu neliek. Vārds jau ir noliedzošs, un not blakus dod dubulto noliegumu, kura standarta angļu valodā nav: ✗ I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him. Tas ir tas pats likums, kas neither … nor (B1 #6) un nobody (A2 #14). Tāpēc pēc hardly seko any, nevis no: hardly any time, bet ne ✗ hardly no time.

Kā tulkot. Latviešu „gandrīz ne-” + darbības vārds ir hardly + darbības vārds bez not; „gandrīz nekad” — hardly ever; „gandrīz nav”, „gandrīz neviens”, „gandrīz nekas” — hardly any, hardly anyone, hardly anything. Latviešu „ne-” angļu frāzē nepārnesiet: tā darbu jau ir izdarījis pats vārds hardly.

hard un hardly — dažādi vārdi. hard ir gan īpašības vārds, gan apstākļa vārds: I work hard — „es daudz un cītīgi strādāju” (A2 #15). hardly nav apstākļa vārds no hard, bet atsevišķs vārds ar savu nozīmi:

She works hard. Viņa daudz strādā.
She hardly works. Viņa gandrīz nestrādā.

Viens burtu pāris maina nozīmi uz pretējo.

Tā nesaka. ✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema.

Ko nozīmē He works hard, un ko — He hardly works? Kas nav kārtībā teikumā There's hardly no time?

rādīt atbildes
I hardly know my neighbours; pirmais — daudz un cītīgi strādā, otrais — gandrīz nestrādā; otrais noliegums ir lieks: There's hardly any time.

Kopsavilkums

Apgūts: 7.–11. nodarbība pilnībā un hardly, hardly ever, rarely, hardly any. Tālāk —

  1. nodarbība: paskaidrot, kā to dara.

Pamata beigas

  • vai blakus hardly nav otra not?
