I hardly know him.
She's hardly ever at home.
We rarely go to the cinema.
I can hardly hear you.
I've hardly slept this week.

ไม่ได้” ใช้กับระดับ: I could hardly breathe. — “ฉันแทบหายใจไม่ออก” ใช้บ่อยเป็นพิเศษกับ can และ could: I can hardly wait!

It hardly ever snows here. เป็นขั้นระหว่าง rarely กับ never: always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never

ในคำตอบสั้น คำเหล่านี้ใช้ลำพัง ไม่มีกริยา: — Do you see your cousins? — Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. ในภาษาพูดทั่วไปมักใช้รูปที่มี not: I don't go very often, I don't really know him ซึ่งนุ่มนวลและง่ายกว่า ส่วน hardly และ rarely ฟังแม่นยำกว่าและหนักแน่นกว่าเล็กน้อย จึงเหมาะเป็นพิเศษกับภาษาเขียน

hardly any, hardly anyone กับ any และคำที่สร้างจากมัน (A2 บทที่ 14) ได้ความหมาย “แทบไม่มี”: There's hardly any milk left. — “นมแทบไม่เหลือแล้ว” Hardly anyone came. There's hardly anything in the fridge.

ไม่ใช้คำปฏิเสธซ้ำ คำเหล่านี้มีความหมายปฏิเสธอยู่แล้ว ถ้ามี not อีกจะกลายเป็นการปฏิเสธซ้อน ซึ่งภาษาอังกฤษมาตรฐานไม่มี: ✗ I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him เป็นกฎเดียวกับ neither … nor (B1 บทที่ 6) และ nobody (A2 บทที่ 14) ดังนั้นหลัง hardly จึงใช้ any ไม่ใช่ no: hardly any time แต่ไม่ใช่ ✗ hardly no time

She works hard.
She hardly works.

ไม่พูดแบบนี้ ✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema คำเหล่านี้ไม่แทรกอยู่ระหว่างกริยากับสิ่งที่ตามหลังกริยา

He works hard หมายความว่าอะไร และ He hardly works หมายความว่าอะไร? There's hardly no time ผิดตรงไหน?

I hardly know my neighbours; There's hardly any time.
