Lietuviškai „beveik nepažįstu“, „beveik niekada nežiūriu“ sudaromi su neiginiu „ne-“, o „retai“ skamba kaip neigimas. Anglų kalboje yra žodžių, kurie patys neša neigimą, be not: hardly — „beveik ne, vos“, hardly ever — „beveik niekada“, rarely — „retai“.

Vieta. Šie žodžiai stovi ten pat, kur dažnumo prieveiksmiai (A1 #11): prieš pagrindinį veiksmažodį, bet po be ir po pagalbinio ar modalinio veiksmažodžio.

I hardly know him. Aš jo beveik nepažįstu.
She's hardly ever at home. Jos beveik niekada nebūna namie.
We rarely go to the cinema. Mes retai einame į kiną.
I can hardly hear you. Aš tavęs beveik negirdžiu.
I've hardly slept this week. Šią savaitę beveik nemiegojau.

Ką reiškia kiekvienas.

hardly — „beveik ne, vos“ apie laipsnį: I could hardly breathe. — „Vos galėjau kvėpuoti“. Ypač dažnai — su can ir could: I can hardly wait! — „Nesulaukiu!“

hardly ever — „beveik niekada“ apie dažnumą: It hardly ever snows here. Tai pakopa tarp rarely ir never: always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never.

rarely — „retai“, ramiau: I rarely eat meat. Knyginėje kalboje tą patį reiškia seldom.

Trumpajame atsakyme šie žodžiai stovi vieni, be veiksmažodžio: — Do you see your cousins? — Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. Įprastas šnekamasis variantas — su not: I don't go very often, I don't really know him. Jis švelnesnis ir paprastesnis; hardly ir rarely skamba tiksliau ir šiek tiek stipriau, todėl ypač tinka rašant.

hardly any, hardly anyone. Su any ir jo vediniais (A2 #14) gaunama „beveik nėra“: There's hardly any milk left. — „Pieno beveik neliko“. Hardly anyone came. — „Beveik niekas neatėjo“. There's hardly anything in the fridge. — „Šaldytuve beveik nieko nėra“.

Antrojo neigimo nededama. Žodis jau neigiamas, ir not šalia duoda dvigubą neigimą, kurio standartinėje anglų kalboje nėra: ✗ I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him. Tai tas pats dėsnis kaip neither … nor (B1 #6) ir nobody (A2 #14). Todėl po hardly eina any, o ne no: hardly any time, bet ne ✗ hardly no time.

Kaip versti. Lietuviškas „beveik ne-“ + veiksmažodis — tai hardly + veiksmažodis be not; „beveik niekada“ — hardly ever; „beveik nėra“, „beveik niekas“, „beveik nieko“ — hardly any, hardly anyone, hardly anything. Neiginio „ne-“ į anglišką frazę neperkelkite, net jei lietuviškai neiginiai du („beveik niekas neatėjo“): jo darbą jau atliko pats žodis hardly.

hard ir hardly — skirtingi žodžiai. hard — ir būdvardis, ir prieveiksmis: I work hard — „daug ir uoliai dirbu“ (A2 #15). hardly — ne prieveiksmis nuo hard, o atskiras žodis su savo prasme:

She works hard. Ji daug dirba.
She hardly works. Ji beveik nedirba.

Dvi raidės apverčia prasmę.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema. Tarp veiksmažodžio ir to, kas eina po jo, šie žodžiai nestoja.

Pasitikrinkite. Kaip pasakyti „aš beveik nepažįstu kaimynų“? Ką reiškia He works hard, o ką — He hardly works? Kas negerai sakinyje There's hardly no time?

rodyti atsakymus
I hardly know my neighbours; pirmasis — daug ir uoliai dirba, antrasis — beveik nedirba; antrasis neigimas nereikalingas: There's hardly any time.

Mini pasakojimas

  • ar šalia hardly nėra antrojo not?
