16분모르는 사람에게 직접 의문문으로 Where is the station? 질문을 틀로 감싸면 더 정중해집니다: Could you tell me…? — '~ 좀 알려 주시겠어요?', Do you know…?
|---|---|
| Where is the station? | Could you tell me where the station is? |
| What time does the museum open? | Do you know what time the museum opens? |
| How much did the tickets cost? | Can you remember how much the tickets cost? |
| Is this seat free? | Could you tell me if this seat is free? |
| Does this bus go to the centre? | Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre? |
어순이 평서문 어순이 됩니다: 먼저 주어, 그다음 동사 — where the station is. 조동사 do, does, did가 사라지고, 그 어미는 본동사로 돌아갑니다: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost.
Who lives here?, What happened? Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? 하지만 What is that building? Do you know what that building is?
| Do you know where the toilets are?
| Could you tell me how to get to the castle? |
| Do you happen to know if the bank is open? | |
| I was wondering if you could help me.
I was wondering if… 과거형이 아닌 I wonder… I wonder where she is.
(Do you know…, Could you tell me…) (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…)
I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea 뒤에도 옵니다:
| I don't know where she lives. | |
| I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. | |
| I can't remember where I put my keys. | |
| I have no idea what time it is. |
if일까요, whether일까요. I don't know if he'll come.
| Do you know where he lives? |
| She asked me where he lived.
의문사 + to + 동사. I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. 한국어 '뭘 해야 할지 모르겠다'에 누가 할지를 따로 말하지 않는 것과 비슷합니다. what, where, how, who, which, when, 그리고 whether가 이렇게 쓰입니다:
| I don't know what to say. | |
| Could you show me how to use this machine? | |
| I'm not sure where to park. | |
| Can you tell me which bus to take? |
| We can't decide whether to stay or leave. | |
이 형태에서 동작을 하는 사람은 주절의 주어와 같거나, '누구든'입니다. to 앞에는 whether만 오고 if는 오지 않습니다: whether to stay.
✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. why에는 줄인 형태가 없고, 완전한 절만 씁니다.
Where's the nearest cash machine? I wonder where he is 끝에는 마침표를 찍습니까? I don't know what I should say를 더 짧게 어떻게 말합니까?

✗ Could you tell me where is the station?
✓ Could you tell me where the station is?
안에 do
✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?
✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?
what time does … open을 한 덩어리로 외워 두어서 그대로 넣기 쉽습니다. do는 틀에 이미 있으니 두 번째는 필요 없고, -s는 본동사로 돌아갑니다.
✗ Do you know is this seat free?
✓ Do you know if this seat is free?
I don't know 뒤에 의문문 어순
✗ I don't know what should I do
✓ I don't know what I should do
또는 I don't know what to do. '뭘 해야 할지'의 '해야 할지'를 should I do로 옮기기 쉽습니다. 가장 짧고 안전한 방법은 to를 쓴 형태입니다: what to do.
Could you tell me where the station is ↗
I don't know where it is는 아예 질문이 아니므로, 간접 화법(B1 15과)에서처럼 목소리가 내려갑니다 ↘.
Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/와 /j/가 만나 /dʒ/가 됩니다; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was는 약하게.
Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?
Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.
Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?
I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.
Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.
It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.
Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.
I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.
Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.
Not at all. Enjoy York!
