Gramatika

Tiešs jautājums svešam cilvēkam — Where is the station? Pieklājīgāk ir ietīt jautājumu apvalkā: Could you tell me…? — „vai jūs nevarētu pateikt…?”, Do you know…? — „vai jūs nezināt…?”. Tā rodas netiešais jautājums — jautājums, kas ielikts citā frāzē.

Tā uzbūvi jūs jau redzējāt jautājuma pārstāstā (B1 #15): tiešā vārdu secība, nav do, vispārīgajā jautājumā — if.

Forma: apvalks + jautājuma vārds (vai if) + teikuma priekšmets + darbības vārds.

tiešais jautājums netiešais jautājums
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Mainās uzreiz trīs lietas. Vārdu secība kļūst tiešā: vispirms teikuma priekšmets, tad darbības vārds — where the station is. Palīgdarbības vārdi do, does, did pazūd, un to galotne atgriežas pie pamatdarbības vārda: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Jautājums bez jautājuma vārda, uz kuru atbild „jā” vai „nē”, saņem if vai whether — tas atbilst latviešu „vai” palīgteikuma sākumā.

Ja jautājuma vārds ir teikuma priekšmets. Jautājumos Who lives here?, What happened? secība jau tā ir tiešā, un do nav. Tāpēc apvalkā nekas nemainās: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Bet jautājumā What is that building? teikuma priekšmets ir that building, un tas jāliek pirms darbības vārda: Do you know what that building is?

Apvalki — no vienkāršākā līdz vismaigākajam:

Do you know where the toilets are? Vai jūs nezināt, kur ir tualete? — parasts jautājums garāmgājējam
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Vai nevarētu pateikt, kā nokļūt līdz pilij? — pieklājīgi
Do you happen to know if the bank is open?
I was wondering if you could help me. Vai jūs nevarētu man palīdzēt? — vismaigākais lūgums

I was wondering if… burtiski nozīmē „es te prātoju, vai…”, un pagātne te nav par pagātni: tā padara lūgumu maigāku, tāpat kā could can vietā. Bet I wonder… bez pagātnes ir „interesanti…”, doma skaļi: I wonder where she is. — „Interesanti, kur viņa ir.”

Jautājuma zīmi liek pēc apvalka. Ja apvalks ir jautājums (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), beigās ir jautājuma zīme. Ja apgalvojums (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), beigās ir punkts, kaut arī iekšā ir jautājuma vārds.

Pateikt, ka nezināt. Tie paši netiešie jautājumi stāv aiz I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea:

I don't know where she lives. Nezinu, kur viņa dzīvo.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. Neesmu drošs, vai veikals svētdienās strādā.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Neatceros, kur noliku atslēgas.
I have no idea what time it is. Nav ne jausmas, cik pulkstenis.

if vai whether. Gandrīz vienmēr var lietot abus; whether ir mazliet oficiālāks. if šeit nozīmē „vai”, nevis „ja”, tāpēc pēc tā var stāvēt nākotne: I don't know if he'll come. — „Nezinu, vai viņš atnāks.” Likums „pēc if tagadne nākotnes vietā” (A2 #27) attiecas tikai uz „ja”.

Salīdziniet ar pārstāstu:

Do you know where he lives? jautāju tagad — laiks nemainās
She asked me where he lived. ziņoju par agrāku jautājumu — pārbīde (B1 #15)

Jautājuma vārds + to + darbības vārds. Kad runa ir par to, ko darīt, palīgteikumu var saīsināt: I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Latviski tāpat: „nezinu, ko darīt”. Tā strādā what, where, how, who, which, when un whether:

I don't know what to say. Nezinu, ko teikt.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Vai nevarētu parādīt, kā lietot šo automātu?
I'm not sure where to park. Nezinu, kur nolikt mašīnu.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Vai nevarētu pateikt, ar kuru autobusu braukt?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave.

Pirms to der tikai whether, ne if: whether to stay.

Tā nesaka. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. Ar why saīsinātās formas nav — tikai pilns palīgteikums.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Kā pieklājīgi pajautāt Where's the nearest cash machine? Kāpēc teikuma I wonder where he is beigās ir punkts? Kā īsāk pateikt I don't know what I should say?

rādīt atbildes
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? vai Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; apvalks I wonder ir apgalvojums, nevis jautājums; I don't know what to say.

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas

pielāgots tavai valodai
1

Jautājuma vārdu secība iekšā

✗ Could you tell me where is the station? → ✓ Could you tell me where the station is? Tas pats pēc I don't know: ✗ I don't know what should I do → ✓ I don't know what I should do vai I don't know what to do. Jautājumu jau uzdeva apvalks, bet iekšā stāv parasts apgalvojums.

2

do iekšā

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

Latviešu valodā do nav, tāpēc what time does … open iegaumē kā vienu gatavu jautājumu. Bet do apvalkā jau ir, otrs nav vajadzīgs; galotne -s atgriežas pie darbības vārda.

3

Vispārīgais jautājums bez if

✗ Do you know is this seat free?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

Latviski „vai” sāk gan tiešo jautājumu („Vai šī vieta ir brīva?”), gan ielikto („Vai nezināt, vai šī vieta ir brīva?”), tāpēc šķiet, ka pietiek ielikt angļu jautājumu veselu. Bet tiešajā jautājumā „vai” vietā ir vārdu secība, un palīgteikumā vajag if vai whether.

4

Komats pirms jautājuma vārda

✗ Do you know, where the station is?

✓ Do you know where the station is?

Netiešajā jautājumā pirms where, what, if komata nav.

Izruna

4 min

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

Bet I don't know where it is vispār nav jautājums — balss krīt ↘, kā pārstāstā (B1 #15).

Apvalki ātrā runā saplūst: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ un /j/ dod /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was vājš.

wonder un wander. wonder /ˈwʌndə/ — „prātot, interesēties”, ar /ʌ/, kā won. wander /ˈwɒndə/ — „klejot”, ar /ɒ/, kā want. Bet whether skan tāpat kā weather: /ˈweðə/.

Teksts

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
