if ஆ, whether ஆ. கிட்டத்தட்ட எப்போதும் இரண்டுமே சரி; whether சற்று அலுவல்பூர்வமானது. இங்கே if என்பது கேள்வியின் “-ஆ”, நிபந்தனையின் “-ஆல்” அல்ல, அதனால் அதற்குப் பின் எதிர்காலம் வரலாம்: I don't know if he'll come. — “அவன் வருவானா என்று தெரியாது”. “if க்குப் பின் எதிர்காலத்துக்குப் பதில் நிகழ்காலம்” என்ற விதி (A2 #27) நிபந்தனையான “வந்தால்” வகைக்கு மட்டுமே பொருந்தும்.

I'm not sure where to park. காரை எங்கே நிறுத்துவது என்று தெரியவில்லை.
Can you tell me which bus to take? எந்தப் பேருந்தில் ஏறுவது என்று சொல்ல முடியுமா?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave. இருப்பதா போவதா என்று எங்களால் முடிவு செய்ய முடியவில்லை.

இந்த வடிவத்தில் செயலைச் செய்பவர் முதன்மைப் பகுதியில் உள்ள அதே ஆள், அல்லது “யார் வேண்டுமானாலும்”. to க்கு முன் whether மட்டுமே வரும், if அல்ல: whether to stay.
