Tanımadığınız birine sorulan doğrudan soru — Where is the station? Soruyu bir çerçeveye sarmak daha kibardır: Could you tell me…? — “… söyleyebilir misiniz?”, Do you know…? — “… biliyor musunuz?”. Ortaya dolaylı soru çıkar — başka bir cümlenin içine yerleştirilmiş soru.

Yapısını soruyu aktarırken (B1 #15) zaten gördünüz: düz sıra, do yok, evet-hayır sorusunda if.

Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Aynı anda üç şey değişir. Sıra düzleşir: önce özne, sonra fiil — where the station is. Yardımcı fiiller do, does, did kaybolur ve ekleri asıl fiile döner: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Soru kelimesi olmayan, “evet” ya da “hayır” cevaplı soru if ya da whether alır — Türkçedeki “olup olmadığını”nın karşılığı budur.

Soru kelimesi özneyse. Who lives here?, What happened? sorularında sıra zaten düzdür ve do yoktur. Bu yüzden çerçevede hiçbir şey değişmez: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Ama What is that building? sorusunda özne that building'dir ve fiilin önüne geçmesi gerekir: Do you know what that building is?

Çerçeveler — en sadesinden en yumuşağına:

Do you know where the toilets are? Tuvaletin nerede olduğunu biliyor musunuz? — yoldan geçen birine sıradan bir soru
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Kaleye nasıl gidildiğini söyleyebilir misiniz? — kibar
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Bankanın açık olup olmadığını acaba biliyor musunuz?
I was wondering if you could help me. Bana yardım edebilir misiniz acaba? — en yumuşak rica

I was wondering if… kelimesi kelimesine “merak ediyordum, acaba…” demektir, ve buradaki geçmiş zaman geçmişten söz etmez: can yerine could gibi, ricayı yumuşatır. Geçmiş zamansız I wonder… ise “merak ediyorum…, acaba…” — yüksek sesle düşünmektir: I wonder where she is. — “Acaba nerede?”.

Soru işareti çerçeveye göre konur. Çerçeve bir soruysa (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), sonda soru işareti olur. Bir bildirimse (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), içinde soru kelimesi olsa da sonda nokta olur.

Bilmediğinizi söylemek. Aynı dolaylı sorular I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea'dan sonra gelir:

I don't know where she lives. Nerede oturduğunu bilmiyorum.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. Dükkânın pazar günleri açık olup olmadığından emin değilim.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Anahtarlarımı nereye koyduğumu hatırlamıyorum.
I have no idea what time it is. Saatin kaç olduğu hakkında hiçbir fikrim yok.

if mi, whether mı? Neredeyse her zaman ikisi de olur; whether biraz daha resmîdir. if burada “eğer” değil, “olup olmadığını” anlamındadır, bu yüzden ondan sonra gelecek zaman gelebilir: I don't know if he'll come. — “Gelip gelmeyeceğini bilmiyorum.” “if'ten sonra gelecek yerine şimdiki zaman” kuralı (A2 #27) yalnızca “eğer” anlamındaki if içindir.

Aktarmayla karşılaştırın:

Do you know where he lives? şimdi soruyorum — zaman değişmez
She asked me where he lived. geçmişteki bir soruyu bildiriyorum — kayma (B1 #15)

Soru kelimesi + to + fiil. Ne yapılacağından söz edildiğinde yan cümle kısaltılabilir: I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Böyle çalışanlar: what, where, how, who, which, when ve whether:

I don't know what to say. Ne diyeceğimi bilmiyorum.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Bu makineyi nasıl kullanacağımı gösterebilir misiniz?
I'm not sure where to park. Arabayı nereye park edeceğimi bilmiyorum.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Hangi otobüse bineceğimi söyleyebilir misiniz?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave. Kalalım mı gidelim mi, karar veremiyoruz.

Bu biçimde eylemi ana cümledeki kişi ya da “herhangi biri” yapar. to'dan önce yalnızca whether kullanılır, if kullanılmaz: whether to stay.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. why ile kısa biçim yoktur — yalnızca tam yan cümle.

Kendinizi sınayın. Where's the nearest cash machine? kibarca nasıl sorulur? I wonder where he is cümlesinin sonunda neden nokta var? I don't know what I should say daha kısa nasıl söylenir?

cevapları göster
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? ya da Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; I wonder çerçevesi bir soru değil, bildirimdir; I don't know what to say.

Türkçe konuşanların hataları

diliniz için yazıldı
1

İçeride soru sırası

✗ Could you tell me where is the station?

✓ Could you tell me where the station is?

2

İçeride do

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

does “saat kaçta” sorusunun bir parçası gibi gelir. Ama çerçevede do zaten var, ikincisine gerek yok; -s eki fiile döner.

3

if'siz evet-hayır sorusu

✗ Do you know is this seat free?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

Türkçe konuşmada iki soru çoğu zaman yan yana söylenir: “Bu koltuk boş mu, biliyor musunuz?” İngilizcede içteki soru if ya da whether ile başlar ve sırası düzdür.

4

I don't know'dan sonra soru sırası

✗ I don't know what should I do

✓ I don't know what I should do

ya da I don't know what to do. En kısa ve en güvenli çıkış yolu to'lu biçimdir: what to do.

Telaffuz

4 dk

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

I don't know where it is ise hiç soru değildir — ses düşer ↘, aktarmada olduğu gibi (B1 #15).

Çerçeveler akıcı konuşmada kaynaşır: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ ile /j/ birleşip /dʒ/ olur; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was zayıf.

Metin

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
