Að spyrja kurteislega og segja að maður viti ekki

Eftir þessa kennslustund geturðu

Ég get spurt ókunnuga manneskju þannig að það hljómi ekki eins og yfirheyrsla, og sagt að ég viti ekki eitthvað.

Bein spurning til ókunnugrar manneskju — Where is the station? Kurteisara er að pakka spurningunni inn í umgjörð: Could you tell me…? — „gætirðu sagt mér…?“, Do you know…? — „veistu…?“. Úr verður óbein spurning — spurning sem er felld inn í aðra setningu.

Gerð hennar sástu þegar í endursögn spurningar (lexía B1 #15): bein orðaröð, ekkert do, og í já/nei-spurningu — if.

Mynd: umgjörð + spurnarorð (eða if) + frumlag + sögn.

bein spurning óbein spurning
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Þrennt breytist í einu. Orðaröðin verður bein: fyrst frumlag, svo sögn — where the station is. Hjálparsagnirnar do, does, did hverfa, og endingin þeirra færist aftur yfir á aðalsögnina: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Spurning án spurnarorðs, sem svarað er með „já“ eða „nei“, fær if eða whether — þetta er íslenska „hvort“.

Ef spurnarorðið er frumlag. Í spurningunum Who lives here?, What happened? er orðaröðin þegar bein og ekkert do. Þess vegna breytist ekkert innan umgjarðarinnar: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? En í What is that building? er frumlagið that building, og það þarf að setja á undan sögninni: Do you know what that building is?

Umgjarðir — frá einföldustu til mildustu:

Do you know where the toilets are? Veistu hvar klósettið er? — venjuleg spurning til vegfaranda
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Gætirðu sagt mér hvernig ég kemst að kastalanum? — kurteislegt
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Veistu nokkuð hvort bankinn er opinn?
I was wondering if you could help me. Gætirðu nokkuð hjálpað mér? — mildasta beiðnin

I was wondering if… merkir bókstaflega „ég var að velta fyrir mér hvort…“, og þátíðin vísar hér ekki til fortíðar: hún mildar beiðnina, eins og could í stað can. En I wonder… án þátíðar er hugsun upphátt — „ég velti fyrir mér…“, „skyldi…“: I wonder where she is. — „Ég velti fyrir mér hvar hún er.“

Spurningarmerkið fer eftir umgjörðinni. Ef umgjörðin er spurning (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), kemur spurningarmerki í lokin. Ef hún er staðhæfing (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), kemur punktur, þótt spurnarorð standi inni í setningunni.

Að segja að maður viti ekki. Sömu óbeinu spurningarnar standa á eftir I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea:

I don't know where she lives. Ég veit ekki hvar hún býr.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Ég man ekki hvar ég setti lyklana.
I have no idea what time it is.

if eða whether. Næstum alltaf má nota hvort sem er; whether er aðeins formlegra. if merkir hér „hvort“, ekki „ef“, og þess vegna má framtíð koma á eftir því: I don't know if he'll come. — „Ég veit ekki hvort hann kemur.“ Reglan „á eftir if nútíð í stað framtíðar“ (A2 #27) á aðeins við um „ef“.

Berðu saman við endursögn:

Do you know where he lives? ég spyr núna — tíðin breytist ekki
She asked me where he lived. ég segi frá spurningu sem var borin fram áður — tíðin færist (B1 #15)

Spurnarorð + to + sögn. Þegar rætt er um hvað eigi að gera má stytta aukasetninguna: I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Íslenskan segir yfirleitt „ég veit ekki hvað ég á að gera“; enskan styttir þetta í what to do. Þannig virka what, where, how, who, which, when og whether:

I don't know what to say. Ég veit ekki hvað ég á að segja.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Gætirðu sýnt mér hvernig á að nota þessa vél?
I'm not sure where to park. Ég veit ekki hvar ég á að leggja bílnum.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Geturðu sagt mér hvaða strætó ég á að taka?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave. Við getum ekki ákveðið hvort við eigum að vera eða fara.

Verknaðinn í þessari mynd framkvæmir sá sami og í aðalsetningunni, eða „hver sem er“. Á undan to gengur aðeins whether, ekki if: whether to stay.

Svona er ekki sagt. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. Með why er engin stutt gerð — aðeins heil aukasetning.

Prófaðu kunnáttuna. Hvernig spyrðu kurteislega Where's the nearest cash machine? Hvers vegna er punktur í lok I wonder where he is? Hvernig segirðu styttra I don't know what I should say?

sýna svörin
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? eða Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; umgjörðin I wonder er staðhæfing, ekki spurning; I don't know what to say.

„Gætirðu sagt mér“ með say

✗ Could you say me where the station is?

✓ Could you tell me where the station is?

Íslenska „segja“ tekur manneskjuna í þágufalli án forsetningar: „sagt mér“. say gerir það ekki: þegar nefnt er hver fær að vita eitthvað þarf tell — tell me, tell us (lexía B1 #15).

2

„Hvað er klukkan?“ orð fyrir orð

✗ Do you know what the clock is?

✓ Do you know what time it is?

Íslenskan spyr um klukkuna, enskan um tímann: What time is it?, og inni í óbeinni spurningu what time it is.

3

Nútíð í stað framtíðar á eftir „hvort“

„Ég er ekki viss um hvort það rignir á morgun“ → ✗ I'm not sure if it rains tomorrow → ✓ I'm not sure if it will rain tomorrow. Á íslensku dugar nútíðin, og reglan úr lexíu A2 #27 virðist staðfesta það. En þetta if er „hvort“, ekki „ef“: þegar rætt er um framtíðina kemur will.

Framburður

4 mín.

Óbein spurning er ein setning með einu tónfalli, ekki tvær spurningar í röð:

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

En I don't know where it is er alls engin spurning — röddin fellur ↘, eins og í endursögn (B1 #15).

Umgjarðirnar renna saman í hröðu tali: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ og /j/ verða að /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was veikt.

wonder og wander. wonder /ˈwʌndə/ — „velta fyrir sér“, með /ʌ/, eins og í won. wander /ˈwɒndə/ — „ráfa“, með /ɒ/, eins og í want. Og whether hljómar alveg eins og weather: /ˈweðə/.

Texti

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
