Soalan langsung kepada orang yang tidak dikenali — Where is the station? — dibina dengan betul, tetapi kedengaran kasar, hampir seperti tuntutan, walaupun dengan Excuse me (A1 #21). Lebih sopan jika soalan itu dibalut dengan pembuka: Could you tell me…? — “boleh beritahu saya…?”, Do you know…?

Bezanya hanya satu.

Bentuk: pembuka + kata tanya (atau if) + subjek + kata kerja.

soalan langsung soalan tidak langsung
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Tiga perkara berubah serentak. Susunannya menjadi biasa: mula-mula subjek, kemudian kata kerja — where the station is. Kata kerja bantu do, does, did hilang, dan akhirannya kembali kepada kata kerja utama: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Soalan tanpa kata tanya, yang dijawab “ya” atau “tidak”, mendapat if atau whether — inilah “sama ada” dalam bahasa Inggeris.

Jika kata tanya itu sendiri subjeknya. Dalam soalan Who lives here?, What happened? susunannya memang sudah biasa, dan tiada do. Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Tetapi dalam What is that building? subjeknya ialah that building, dan ia perlu diletakkan di hadapan kata kerja: Do you know what that building is?

Do you know where the toilets are? Anda tahu di mana tandas? — soalan biasa kepada orang yang lalu-lalang
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? — sopan
Do you happen to know if the bank is open?
I was wondering if you could help me. Bolehkah anda tolong saya? — permintaan yang paling lembut

I was wondering if… secara harfiah bermaksud “saya tertanya-tanya sama ada…”, dan kala lampau di sini tidak merujuk kepada masa lampau: ia melembutkan permintaan, seperti could sebagai ganti can. Manakala I wonder… tanpa kala lampau bermaksud “saya ingin tahu…”, fikiran yang diucapkan dengan lantang: I wonder where she is. — “Saya tertanya-tanya di mana dia.”

Tanda soal ditentukan oleh pembuka. Jika pembukanya soalan (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), di hujung ada tanda soal. Jika pembukanya ayat penyata (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), di hujung ada noktah, walaupun di dalamnya ada kata tanya.

Mengatakan bahawa anda tidak tahu. Soalan tidak langsung yang sama datang selepas I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea:

I don't know where she lives. Saya tidak tahu di mana dia tinggal.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays.
I can't remember where I put my keys.
I have no idea what time it is. Saya langsung tidak tahu pukul berapa sekarang.

if atau whether.

Do you know where he lives? saya bertanya sekarang — kala tidak berubah
She asked me where he lived. saya memaklumkan tentang soalan yang lalu — kala dianjak (B1 #15)

Kata tanya + to + kata kerja. I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Begini berfungsi what, where, how, who, which, when dan whether:

I don't know what to say. Saya tidak tahu apa yang hendak dikatakan.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Boleh tunjukkan cara menggunakan mesin ini?
I'm not sure where to park.
Can you tell me which bus to take?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave.

Di hadapan to hanya whether yang boleh, bukan if: whether to stay.

Jangan sebut begini. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. Dengan why tiada bentuk pendek — hanya klausa penuh.

Uji diri anda. Bagaimana hendak bertanya dengan sopan Where's the nearest cash machine? Mengapa di hujung I wonder where he is ada noktah? Bagaimana hendak menyebut I don't know what I should say dengan lebih pendek?

tunjukkan jawapan
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? atau Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; pembuka I wonder ialah ayat penyata, bukan soalan; I don't know what to say.

Kesilapan penutur bahasa Melayu

ditulis untuk bahasa anda
1

Susunan soalan di dalam

✗ Could you tell me where is the station?

✓ Could you tell me where the station is?

2

do di dalam

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

does terasa sebahagian daripada “pukul berapa”.

3

Soalan ya atau tidak tanpa if, dengan or not di hujung

✗ Do you know this seat is free or not?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

4

Susunan soalan selepas I don't know

✗ I don't know what should I do

✓ I don't know what I should do

atau I don't know what to do. Bentuk What should I do? sudah biasa di telinga, jadi ia diulang tanpa diubah. Jalan yang paling pendek dan selamat ialah bentuk dengan to: what to do.

Sebutan

4 min

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

Manakala I don't know where it is langsung bukan soalan — suara turun ↘, seperti dalam cakap pindah (B1 #15).

Pembuka bercantum dalam pertuturan pantas: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ dan /j/ menjadi /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was lemah.

Dan whether berbunyi sama seperti weather: /ˈweðə/.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
