Suora kysymys tuntemattomalle — Where is the station? — on rakenteeltaan oikein, mutta kuulostaa töksähtävältä, melkein vaatimukselta, vaikka edessä olisi Excuse me (A1 #21). Kohteliaampaa on kääriä kysymys kehykseen: Could you tell me…? — ”voisitteko kertoa…?”, Do you know…? — ”tiedättekö…?”. Tuloksena on epäsuora kysymys — kysymys, joka on upotettu toiseen lauseeseen.

Sen rakenteen olet jo nähnyt kysymyksen referoinnissa (B1 #15): suora sanajärjestys, ei do-apuverbiä, vaihtoehtokysymyksessä if. Ero on yksi. Referoinnissa kerroit kysymyksestä, joka oli esitetty aiemmin, ja aikamuoto siirtyi. Tässä esität oman kysymyksesi nyt, joten aikamuoto pysyy samana kuin suorassa kysymyksessä.

Muoto: kehys + kysymyssana (tai if) + subjekti + verbi.

suora kysymys epäsuora kysymys
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Kolme asiaa muuttuu kerralla. Sanajärjestys muuttuu suoraksi: ensin subjekti, sitten verbi — where the station is. Apuverbit do, does, did katoavat, ja niiden pääte palaa pääverbille: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Kysymys ilman kysymyssanaa, johon vastataan ”kyllä” tai ”ei”, saa sanan if tai whether — se vastaa suomen -ko/-kö-liitettä.

Jos kysymyssana on subjekti. Kysymyksissä Who lives here?, What happened? järjestys on jo valmiiksi suora, eikä do-apuverbiä ole. Siksi kehyksessä mikään ei muutu: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Mutta kysymyksessä What is that building? subjekti on that building, ja se on siirrettävä verbin eteen: Do you know what that building is?

Kehykset — yksinkertaisesta pehmeimpään:

Do you know where the toilets are? Tiedättekö, missä vessa on? — tavallinen kysymys ohikulkijalle
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Voisitteko neuvoa, miten pääsen linnalle? — kohteliaasti
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Tiedättekö sattumalta, onko pankki auki?
I was wondering if you could help me. Voisitteko mitenkään auttaa minua? — kaikkein pehmein pyyntö

I was wondering if… tarkoittaa sanatarkasti ”mietin tässä, voisitteko…”, eikä mennyt aika kerro menneestä: se pehmentää pyyntöä samoin kuin could sanan can sijaan. I wonder… ilman mennyttä aikaa on ajatus ääneen, kuten suomen -han/-hän: I wonder where she is. — ”Missähän hän on.”

Kysymysmerkki tulee kehyksen mukaan. Jos kehys on kysymys (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), lopussa on kysymysmerkki. Jos kehys on toteamus (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), lopussa on piste, vaikka sisällä onkin kysymyssana.

Kun et tiedä. Samat epäsuorat kysymykset tulevat ilmausten I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea jälkeen:

I don't know where she lives. En tiedä, missä hän asuu.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. En ole varma, onko kauppa auki sunnuntaisin.
I can't remember where I put my keys. En muista, mihin panin avaimet.
I have no idea what time it is. Minulla ei ole aavistustakaan, paljonko kello on.

if vai whether. Lähes aina käy kumpi tahansa; whether on hieman virallisempi. if tarkoittaa tässä ”-ko/-kö”, ei ”jos”, joten sen jälkeen voi tulla tulevan ajan muoto: I don't know if he'll come. — ”En tiedä, tuleeko hän.” Sääntö ”if-sanan jälkeen preesens tulevan ajan sijaan” (A2 #27) koskee vain ”jos”-merkitystä.

Vertaa referointiin:

Do you know where he lives? kysyn nyt — aikamuoto ei muutu
She asked me where he lived. kerron aiemmasta kysymyksestä — siirtymä (B1 #15)

Kysymyssana + to + verbi. Kun on kyse siitä, mitä tehdä, sivulauseen voi tiivistää: I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Suomessa samoin: ”en tiedä, mitä tehdä”. Näin toimivat what, where, how, who, which, when ja whether:

I don't know what to say. En tiedä, mitä sanoa.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Voisitteko näyttää, miten tätä automaattia käytetään?
I'm not sure where to park. En tiedä, mihin pysäköidä.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Osaatteko sanoa, mihin bussiin minun pitää nousta?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave. Emme osaa päättää, jäädäkö vai lähteä.

Tämän muodon tekemisen tekijä on sama ihminen kuin päälauseessa tai ”kuka tahansa”. to-sanan edellä käy vain whether, ei if: whether to stay.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. why-sanalla tiivistettyä muotoa ei ole — vain kokonainen sivulause.

Testaa itsesi. Miten kysyt kohteliaasti Where's the nearest cash machine? Miksi lauseen I wonder where he is lopussa on piste? Miten sanot lyhyemmin I don't know what I should say?

näytä vastaukset
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? tai Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; kehys I wonder on toteamus eikä kysymys; I don't know what to say.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

Kysymyksen sanajärjestys sisällä

✗ Could you tell me where is the station? → ✓ Could you tell me where the station is? Suomessa kysymys pysyy upotettuna samana: ”Missä asema on?” → ”Tiedättekö, missä asema on?” Siksi englanninkin kysymys siirretään kehykseen sellaisenaan. Kysymyksen on kuitenkin jo esittänyt kehys, ja sisällä on tavallinen toteamus. Sama I'm not sure -ilmauksen jälkeen: ✗ I'm not sure what should I say → ✓ I'm not sure what to say.

2

do sisällä

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

Suomessa do-sanan kaltaista apuverbiä ei ole, ja does tulee mukaan ulkoa opitusta kysymyksestä. do on kuitenkin jo kehyksessä, toista ei tarvita, ja -s palaa verbille.

3

”Onko” ilman if-sanaa

✗ Do you know is this seat free?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

”Tiedättekö, onko tämä paikka vapaa?” — ”onko” alkaa verbillä kuten englannin is this, ja sana sanalta käännettynä syntyy is this seat free. Suomen -ko/-kö on englanniksi if tai whether, ja sen jälkeen tulee suora sanajärjestys.

4

Pilkku ennen sivulausetta

✗ I don't know, where she lives.

✓ I don't know where she lives.

Suomessa jokainen sivulause erotetaan pilkulla: ”En tiedä, missä hän asuu.” Englannissa epäsuoran kysymyksen eteen ei tule pilkkua.

Ääntäminen

4 min

Epäsuora kysymys on yksi lause ja yksi sävelkulku, ei kaksi kysymystä peräkkäin:

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

Kysymys on tässä kehys. Lopussa ääni yleensä nousee; pehmeä lasku on myös kohtelias, se kuulostaa pyynnöltä. where-sanalla ei ole omaa nousua: sisempi osa sanotaan kuin toteamus. I don't know where it is taas ei ole kysymys lainkaan — ääni laskee ↘ kuten referoinnissa (B1 #15).

Kehykset sulautuvat nopeassa puheessa: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ ja /j/ antavat /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was heikkona.

wonder ja wander. wonder /ˈwʌndə/ — ”miettiä, ihmetellä”, /ʌ/-äänteellä kuten sanassa won. wander /ˈwɒndə/ — ”vaeltaa”, /ɒ/-äänteellä kuten sanassa want. whether kuulostaa samalta kuin weather: /ˈweðə/.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
