Az egyenes kérdés egy idegenhez – Where is the station? Udvariasabb, ha a kérdést egy bevezető fordulatba csomagoljuk: Could you tell me…? – „Meg tudná mondani…?”, Do you know…?

A felépítését már láttad a kérdés továbbadásánál (B1 #15): egyenes szórend, nincs do, az eldöntendő kérdésben if.

Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Három dolog változik egyszerre. A szórend egyenes lesz: előbb az alany, aztán az ige – where the station is. A do, a does és a did segédige eltűnik, a végződése pedig visszakerül a főigére: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost.

A Who lives here? és a What happened? kérdésben a szórend amúgy is egyenes, és nincs do. Ezért a bevezető után semmi sem változik: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? A What is that building? kérdésben viszont az alany a that building, és ezt az ige elé kell tenni: Do you know what that building is?

A bevezetők – az egyszerűtől a legudvariasabbig:

Do you know where the toilets are? Nem tudja, hol van a mosdó? – szokásos kérdés egy járókelőhöz
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? – udvarias
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Nem tudja véletlenül, nyitva van-e a bank?
I was wondering if you could help me. Segítene esetleg? – a legudvariasabb kérés

Az I was wondering if… szó szerint azt jelenti: „azon gondolkodtam, vajon…”, és a múlt idő itt nem a múltról szól: lágyítja a kérést, ahogy a could a can helyett. A magyarban ezt a feltételes mód végzi: „tudna”, „segítene”. Az I wonder… múlt idő nélkül viszont „kíváncsi vagyok…”, „vajon…” – hangos gondolkodás: I wonder where she is. – „Vajon hol lehet?”

A kérdőjel a bevezetőhöz igazodik. Ha a bevezető kérdés (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), a mondat végén kérdőjel áll. Ha kijelentés (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), a végén pont áll, bár a mondat belsejében kérdőszó van.

Megmondani, hogy nem tudod. Ugyanezek az indirekt kérdések állnak az I don't know, az I'm not sure, az I can't remember és az I have no idea után:

I don't know where she lives. Nem tudom, hol lakik.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Nem emlékszem, hova tettem a kulcsaimat.
I have no idea what time it is. Fogalmam sincs, hány óra van.

if vagy whether. Szinte mindig mindkettő jó; a whether kicsit hivatalosabb. Az if itt „-e”, nem „ha”, ezért utána jövő idő is állhat: I don't know if he'll come.

Hasonlítsd össze a továbbadással:

Do you know where he lives? most kérdezem – az igeidő nem változik
She asked me where he lived. egy korábbi kérdésről számolok be – eltolódás (B1 #15)

Kérdőszó + to + ige. I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. A magyar ilyenkor felszólító módot használ – „nem tudom, mit csináljak” –, az angol to + igét. Így működik a what, a where, a how, a who, a which, a when és a whether:

I don't know what to say. Nem tudom, mit mondjak.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Megmutatná, hogyan kell használni ezt az automatát?
I'm not sure where to park. Nem tudom, hol parkoljak.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Meg tudná mondani, melyik buszra szálljak?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave.

A to előtt csak whether állhat, if nem: whether to stay.

Így nem mondjuk. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. A why-nak nincs rövidített alakja, csak teljes mellékmondattal áll.

Ellenőrizd magad. Hogyan kérdezed meg udvariasan: Where's the nearest cash machine? Miért áll pont az I wonder where he is végén? Hogyan mondod rövidebben: I don't know what I should say?

mutasd a válaszokat
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? vagy Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; az I wonder bevezető kijelentés, nem kérdés; I don't know what to say.

A magyar anyanyelvűek hibái

a te nyelvedre írva
1

Kérdő szórend a mondat belsejében

✗ Could you tell me where is the station? → ✓ Could you tell me where the station is? Ugyanígy: ✗ I don't know what should I do → ✓ I don't know what to do.

2

do a mondat belsejében

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

A does a „mikor nyit?” kérdés részének érződik, ezért vele együtt bekerül.

3

Eldöntendő kérdés if nélkül

✗ Do you know is this seat free?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

4

Vessző a kérdőszó és az if előtt

✗ Could you tell me, where the station is?

✗ I don't know, if the shop is open

✓ Could you tell me where the station is?

I don't know if the shop is open. A magyarban minden mellékmondat előtt vessző áll („nem tudom, hol lakik”), az angolban a kérdőszó, az if és a whether előtt nem.

Kiejtés

4 perc

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

A kérdés itt a bevezető. A végén a hang általában felmegy; a lágy ereszkedés is udvarias, kérésnek hangzik. A where-en nincs külön emelkedés: a belső részt kijelentésként ejtjük. Az I don't know where it is pedig egyáltalán nem kérdés – a hang lefelé megy ↘, mint a továbbadott kérdésben (B1 #15).

A bevezetők gyors beszédben összeolvadnak: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ – a /d/ és a /j/ együtt /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ – a was gyenge alakú.

wonder és wander. A wonder /ˈwʌndə/ – „kíváncsi, töpreng”, /ʌ/-vel, mint a won-ban. A wander /ˈwɒndə/ – „kóborol”, /ɒ/-vel, mint a want-ban. A whether pedig ugyanúgy hangzik, mint a weather: /ˈweðə/.

Szöveg

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
