Tiesioginis klausimas nepažįstamam žmogui — Where is the station? Mandagiau klausimą įvilkti į įvadinę frazę: Could you tell me…? — „gal galėtumėte pasakyti…?“, Do you know…? — „gal žinote…?“. Gaunamas netiesioginis klausimas — klausimas, įterptas į kitą frazę.

Jo sandarą jau matėte perpasakodami klausimą (B1 #15): tiesioginė žodžių tvarka, nėra do, bendrajame klausime — if. Skirtumas vienas.

Forma: įvadinė frazė + klausiamasis žodis (arba if) + veiksnys + veiksmažodis.

tiesioginis klausimas netiesioginis klausimas
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Pasikeičia trys dalykai iš karto. Žodžių tvarka tampa tiesioginė: pirma veiksnys, paskui veiksmažodis — where the station is. Pagalbiniai do, does, did dingsta, o jų galūnė grįžta pagrindiniam veiksmažodžiui: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Klausimas be klausiamojo žodžio, į kurį atsakoma „taip“ arba „ne“, gauna if arba whether — tai angliškas „ar“.

Jei klausiamasis žodis — veiksnys. Klausimuose Who lives here?, What happened? tvarka ir taip tiesioginė, o do nėra. Todėl įvadinėje frazėje niekas nesikeičia: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Bet sakinyje What is that building? veiksnys — that building, ir jį reikia pastatyti prieš veiksmažodį: Do you know what that building is?

Įvadinės frazės — nuo paprastos iki pačios švelniausios:

Do you know where the toilets are? Gal žinote, kur tualetas? — įprastas klausimas praeiviui
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Gal galėtumėte pasakyti, kaip nueiti iki pilies? — mandagiai
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Gal atsitiktinai žinote, ar bankas atidarytas?
I was wondering if you could help me. Gal galėtumėte man padėti? — pats švelniausias prašymas

I was wondering if… pažodžiui reiškia „aš čia svarsčiau, ar…“, ir būtasis laikas čia ne apie praeitį: jis švelnina prašymą, kaip could vietoj can. O I wonder… be būtojo laiko — „įdomu…“, mintis balsu: I wonder where she is. — „Įdomu, kur ji“.

Klaustukas dedamas pagal įvadinę frazę. Jei įvadinė frazė — klausimas (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), gale klaustukas. Jei teiginys (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), gale taškas, nors viduje ir yra klausiamasis žodis.

Pasakyti, kad nežinote. Tie patys netiesioginiai klausimai eina po I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea:

I don't know where she lives. Nežinau, kur ji gyvena.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. Nesu tikras, ar parduotuvė dirba sekmadieniais.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Neprisimenu, kur padėjau raktus.
I have no idea what time it is. Neturiu supratimo, kiek dabar valandų.

if ar whether. Beveik visada tinka abu; whether kiek oficialesnis. if čia reiškia „ar“, o ne „jei“, todėl po jo galimas būsimasis laikas: I don't know if he'll come. — „Nežinau, ar jis ateis“. Taisyklė „po if esamasis laikas vietoj būsimojo“ (A2 #27) galioja tik „jei“.

Palyginkite su perpasakojimu:

Do you know where he lives? klausiu dabar — laikas nesikeičia
She asked me where he lived. pranešu apie ankstesnį klausimą — poslinkis (B1 #15)

Klausiamasis žodis + to + veiksmažodis. I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Lietuviškai taip pat: „nežinau, ką daryti“. Taip veikia what, where, how, who, which, when ir whether:

I don't know what to say. Nežinau, ką pasakyti.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Gal parodytumėte, kaip naudotis šiuo automatu?
I'm not sure where to park. Nežinau, kur pastatyti automobilį.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Gal galite pasakyti, kokiu autobusu važiuoti?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave.

Prieš to tinka tik whether, ne if: whether to stay.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go.

Pasitikrinkite. Kaip mandagiai paklausti Where's the nearest cash machine? Kodėl sakinio I wonder where he is gale taškas? Kaip trumpiau pasakyti I don't know what I should say?

rodyti atsakymus
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? arba Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; įvadinė frazė I wonder — teiginys, o ne klausimas; I don't know what to say.

Lietuvių kalbos gimtakalbių klaidos

parašyta jūsų kalbai
1

Klausiamoji tvarka viduje

✗ Could you tell me where is the station? → ✓ Could you tell me where the station is? Tas pats po I don't know: ✗ I don't know where is she → ✓ I don't know where she is. Klausimą jau užduoda įvadinė frazė, o viduje stovi paprastas teiginys.

2

do viduje

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

Lietuvių kalboje do atitikmens nėra, todėl what time does … open įsimenamas kaip vientisas klausimo blokas. Bet do įvadinėje frazėje jau yra, antro nereikia; galūnė -s grįžta veiksmažodžiui.

3

Bendrasis klausimas be if

✗ Do you know is this seat free?

✓ Do you know if this seat is free?

4

Kablelis prieš klausiamąjį žodį

✗ Do you know, where the station is?

✓ Do you know where the station is?

Lietuviškai šalutinis sakinys visada atskiriamas kableliu („nežinau, kur ji“), ir ranka jį deda ir angliškai. Angliškai prieš where, what, if netiesioginiame klausime kablelio nėra.

Tarimas

4 min

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

Klausimas čia — įvadinė frazė. Gale balsas paprastai kyla; švelnus kritimas irgi mandagus, jis skamba kaip prašymas. Ties where atskiro pakilimo nėra: vidinė dalis tariama kaip teiginys. O I don't know where it is visai nėra klausimas — balsas krinta ↘, kaip perpasakojime (B1 #15).

Įvadinės frazės greitoje kalboje susilieja: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ ir /j/ duoda /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was silpnas.

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
