Grammatika

16 min

Otsene küsimus võõrale inimesele — Where is the station? — on õigesti üles ehitatud, kuid kõlab järsult, peaaegu nõudmisena, isegi koos Excuse me-ga (A1 #21). Viisakam on panna küsimus ümbrisesse: Could you tell me…? — „kas te ütleksite…?“, Do you know…? — „kas te teate…?“. Tulemuseks on kaudne küsimus — küsimus, mis on pandud teise lause sisse.

Selle ehitust nägid juba küsimuse ümberjutustamisel (B1 #15): otsene sõnajärg, do puudub, üldküsimuses — if. Vahe on üks.

Vorm: ümbris + küsisõna (või if) + alus + verb.

otsene küsimus kaudne küsimus
Where is the station? Could you tell me where the station is?
What time does the museum open? Do you know what time the museum opens?
How much did the tickets cost? Can you remember how much the tickets cost?
Is this seat free? Could you tell me if this seat is free?
Does this bus go to the centre? Do you know whether this bus goes to the centre?

Korraga muutub kolm asja. Sõnajärg muutub otseseks: kõigepealt alus, siis verb — where the station is. Abiverbid do, does, did kaovad, nende lõpp aga läheb tagasi põhiverbile: does … open → opens, did … cost → cost. Küsisõnata küsimus, „jah“ või „ei“ peale, saab if-i või whether-i — see on inglise „kas“.

Kui küsisõna on alus. Küsimustes Who lives here?, What happened? on sõnajärg niigi otsene ja do-d pole. Seepärast ümbrises midagi ei muutu: Do you know who lives here?, Could you tell me what happened? Kuid lauses What is that building? on alus that building, ja see tuleb panna verbi ette: Do you know what that building is?

Ümbrised — lihtsast kõige pehmemani:

Do you know where the toilets are? Kas te teate, kus tualett on? — tavaline küsimus möödujale
Could you tell me how to get to the castle? Kas te ütleksite, kuidas lossi juurde saab? — viisakalt
Do you happen to know if the bank is open? Kas te juhtumisi ei tea, kas pank on lahti?
I was wondering if you could help me. Kas te saaksite mind aidata? — kõige pehmem palve

I was wondering if… tähendab sõna-sõnalt „ma mõtlesin, kas…“, ja minevik ei räägi siin minevikust: see teeb palve pehmemaks, nagu could can-i asemel. I wonder… ilma minevikuta on aga „huvitav…“, mõte valjusti: I wonder where she is. — „Huvitav, kus ta on.“

Küsimärk pannakse ümbrise järgi. Kui ümbris on küsimus (Do you know…, Could you tell me…), on lõpus küsimärk. Kui see on väide (I don't know…, I wonder…, I was wondering…), on lõpus punkt, kuigi sees on küsisõna.

Öelda, et ei tea. Samad kaudsed küsimused seisavad ka väljendite I don't know, I'm not sure, I can't remember, I have no idea järel:

I don't know where she lives. Ma ei tea, kus ta elab.
I'm not sure if the shop is open on Sundays. Ma pole kindel, kas pood on pühapäeviti lahti.
I can't remember where I put my keys. Ma ei mäleta, kuhu ma võtmed panin.
I have no idea what time it is. Mul pole aimugi, mis kell on.

if või whether. Peaaegu alati sobivad mõlemad; whether on veidi ametlikum. if tähendab siin „kas“, mitte „kui“, seepärast võib selle järel olla tulevik: I don't know if he'll come. — „Ma ei tea, kas ta tuleb.“ Reegel „if-i järel olevik tuleviku asemel“ (A2 #27) puudutab ainult „kui“-d.

Võrdle ümberjutustusega:

Do you know where he lives? küsin praegu — aeg ei muutu
She asked me where he lived. teatan varasemast küsimusest — nihe (B1 #15)

Küsisõna + to + verb. Kui jutt on sellest, mida teha, võib kõrvallauset lühendada: I don't know what I should do = I don't know what to do. Eesti keeles samamoodi: „ei tea, mida teha“. Nii töötavad what, where, how, who, which, when ja whether:

I don't know what to say. Ma ei tea, mida öelda.
Could you show me how to use this machine? Kas te näitaksite, kuidas seda automaati kasutada?
I'm not sure where to park. Ma ei tea, kuhu autot parkida.
Can you tell me which bus to take? Kas te ütleksite, millise bussiga sõita?
We can't decide whether to stay or leave. Me ei suuda otsustada, kas jääda või minna.

Sellises vormis teeb tegevust sama inimene mis pealauses või „ükskõik kes“. to ette sobib ainult whether, mitte if: whether to stay.

Nii ei öelda. ✗ I don't know why to go → ✓ I don't know why I should go. Eesti keeles „ei tea, miks minna“ sobib, inglise keeles aga why-ga lühendatud vormi pole — ainult täielik kõrvallause.

Kontrolli ennast. Kuidas küsida viisakalt Where's the nearest cash machine? Miks on lause I wonder where he is lõpus punkt? Kuidas öelda lühemalt I don't know what I should say?

näita vastuseid
Could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is? või Do you know where the nearest cash machine is?; ümbris I wonder on väide, mitte küsimus; I don't know what to say.

Eesti keele kõneleja vead

kirjutatud sinu keele jaoks
1

Küsiv sõnajärg sees

✗ Could you tell me where is the station? → ✓ Could you tell me where the station is? Eesti keeles sobib „Kas te ütleksite, kus on jaam?“ — sõnajärg on sama mis otseses küsimuses „Kus on jaam?“. Inglise keeles on küsimuse juba esitanud ümbris, sees on tavaline väide: alus, siis verb. Sama I don't know-i järel: ✗ I'm not sure what should I say → ✓ I'm not sure what to say.

2

do sees

✗ Do you know what time does the museum open?

✓ Do you know what time the museum opens?

Eesti keeles do-taolist sõna pole, ja does tuleb kaasa pähe õpitud küsimusest. Kuid do on juba ümbrises, teist pole vaja, ja -s läheb tagasi verbile.

3

Üldküsimus ilma if-ita

✗ Do you know is this seat free? → ✓ Do you know if this seat is free? Eesti keeles jääb küsimus sees samaks: „Kas see koht on vaba?“ → „Kas te teate, kas see koht on vaba?“ — ja inglise otsene küsimus pannakse sisse tervikuna. Sisemisele „kas“-ile vastab if või whether, selle järel tuleb otsene sõnajärg.

4

say me tell me asemel

✗ Could you say me where the bank is?

✓ Could you tell me where the bank is?

Eesti „ütlema“ on üks verb, olgu inimene nimetatud või mitte. Inglise say inimest enda järele ei võta; „ütle mulle“ on tell + inimene (A2 #29).

5

Koma enne kõrvallauset

✗ I don't know, where she lives.

✓ I don't know where she lives.

4 min

Kaudne küsimus on üks fraas ühe intonatsiooniga, mitte kaks küsimust järjest:

Could you tell me where the station is ↗

Küsimus on siin ümbris. Lõpus hääl tavaliselt tõuseb; pehme langus on samuti viisakas, see kõlab nagu palve. where peal eraldi tõusu pole: sisemine osa hääldatakse nagu väide. I don't know where it is aga pole üldse küsimus — hääl langeb ↘, nagu ümberjutustuses (B1 #15).

Ümbrised sulavad kiires kõnes kokku: Could you /ˈkʊdʒu/ — /d/ ja /j/ annavad /dʒ/; Do you know /djə ˈnəʊ/; I was wondering /aɪ wəz ˈwʌndərɪŋ/ — was on nõrk.

Tekst

5 min

Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you. Could you tell me where the ticket office is?

Of course. It's just over there, on the left, next to the café.

Thank you. And do you happen to know what time the last train to Leeds leaves?

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I think it's at about eleven, but I don't know if it runs on Sundays. There's a timetable on the wall by the main entrance.

Great. One more thing. I was wondering if you could tell me how to get to the castle. I've got a map, but I can't work out which way to go.

It's about fifteen minutes on foot. Go out of the main entrance, cross the bridge and keep walking along the river. You'll see it on your right.

Do you know whether it's open today? I read somewhere that it was closed for repairs.

I've no idea, sorry. But there's a tourist information centre right next to the castle. Ask them what to see first. You can also walk along the old city walls — the views are wonderful.

Thank you so much. You've been really helpful.

Not at all. Enjoy York!
