un- happy → unhappy, clear → unclear, able → unable
in- correct → incorrect, complete → incomplete
im- — p와 m 앞 possible → impossible, polite → impolite
il- — l 앞 legal → illegal
ir- — r 앞 regular → irregular, responsible → irresponsible
dis- agree → disagree, like → dislike, honest → dishonest

동사에 붙은 un-은 반대 행동을 뜻합니다: lock — unlock(자물쇠를 열다), pack — unpack(짐을 풀다), do — undo(되돌리다, 취소하다).

mis- 잘못 understand → misunderstand, spell → misspell
over- 지나치게 sleep → oversleep, cooked → overcooked
under- 모자라게 paid → underpaid, cooked → undercooked
ex- 전(前) boss → ex-boss, wife → ex-wife

사람 -er, -or, -ist, -ee driver, visitor, scientist, employee
형용사 -ful, -less, -able, -al, -ous, -ive useful, useless, washable, natural, dangerous, attractive
동사 -ise, -en realise, organise, shorten

care → careful → carefully → careless → carelessly → carelessness

employ → employer → employee → employment → unemployed → unemployment

He was very helpful.
He was unhelpful.
He was helpless.

  • 자음 뒤의 y는 i가 됩니다: happy → happiness, easy → easily, beauty → beautiful;
  • 묵음 e는 모음으로 시작하는 접미사 앞에서 떨어지지만, 자음 앞에서는 남습니다: use → usable, 하지만 useful; create → creation;
  • 강세가 있는 짧은 음절에서는 모음으로 시작하는 접미사 앞에서 마지막 자음을 두 번 씁니다: begin → beginner, win → winner, run → runner;

접두사는 글자를 먹지 않습니다: un + necessary = unnecessary(n 둘), mis + spell = misspell(s 둘), dis + satisfied = dissatisfied.

✗ unhonest → ✓ dishonest. ✗ unregular → ✓ irregular.

1

✗ unpossible

✗ unlegal

✗ unpolite

✓ impossible

illegal, impolite.

2

✗ There's a big different between them → ✓ There's a big difference between them. ✗ He's very carefully with money → ✓ He's very careful with money.

3

✗ carefull

✗ begining

✗ unecessary

✓ careful

beginning, unnecessary.

-ous는 /əs/, -able은 /əbl/, -ful은 /fl/입니다: dangerous /ˈdeɪndʒərəs/, comfortable /ˈkʌmftəbl/, useful /ˈjuːsfl/.

My first week at the new office was a little disorganised. On Monday morning my manager gave me a list of instructions, but some of them were unclear, and I misunderstood the very first one. I was supposed to reorganise the files on our shared drive. Instead, I deleted a folder that looked unnecessary. It wasn't.

For an hour nobody in the department was able to open their reports. I went to my manager and apologised for my carelessness. Luckily, she was very understanding. "It's not a disaster," she said. "Mistakes like this are almost unavoidable in your first week. The information on our website is incomplete, and that's our fault, not yours."

Our IT specialist, a cheerful young man called Raj, brought the folder back in ten minutes. Then the two of us rewrote the instructions together. We added a short description of every folder, removed the useless parts and checked everything twice. The new version is short, clear and readable, and the next newcomer won't make my mistake.

Raj was helpful from the start. He's also extremely patient — a useful quality in an office full of beginners like me.

예시

Last year I misunderstood an email from my landlord. The message was unclear, and I thought the rent was unchanged. It wasn't. The disagreement lasted a week. I felt embarrassed and apologised for my carelessness. Now I reread every important email twice.
