un- happy → unhappy, clear → unclear, able → unable
in- correct → incorrect, complete → incomplete
im- — p と m の前 possible → impossible, polite → impolite
il- — l の前 legal → illegal
ir- — r の前 regular → irregular, responsible → irresponsible
dis- agree → disagree, like → dislike, honest → dishonest

動詞に付く un- は、逆の動作を表します:lock — unlock(鍵を開ける)、pack — unpack(荷物をほどく)、do — undo(元に戻す)。

over- 〜しすぎ sleep → oversleep, cooked → overcooked
under- 足りない paid → underpaid, cooked → undercooked

人 -er, -or, -ist, -ee driver, visitor, scientist, employee
形容詞 -ful, -less, -able, -al, -ous, -ive useful, useless, washable, natural, dangerous, attractive

care → careful → carefully → careless → carelessly → carelessness

employ → employer → employee → employment → unemployed → unemployment

He was very helpful.
He was unhelpful.
He was helpless.

  • 子音のあとの y は i になります:happy → happiness、easy → easily、beauty → beautiful;
  • 発音しない e は、母音で始まる接尾辞の前では消えますが、子音の前では残ります:use → usable、でも useful;create → creation;
  • 強勢のある短い音節では、母音で始まる接尾辞の前で最後の子音が2つになります:begin → beginner、win → winner、run → runner;

接頭辞は文字を食べません:un + necessary = unnecessary(n が2つ)、mis + spell = misspell(s が2つ)、dis + satisfied = dissatisfied。

✗ unhonest → ✓ dishonest。✗ unregular → ✓ irregular。

✗ unpossible、✗ inhappy、✗ unlegal → ✓ impossible、 unhappy、illegal。

✗ There's a big different between them → ✓ There's a big difference between them。✗ He's very carefully with money → ✓ He's very careful with money。✗ She drove very careful → ✓ She drove very carefully。

✗ carefull、✗ begining、✗ unecessary、✗ hapiness → ✓ careful、 beginning、unnecessary、happiness。

-ous は /əs/、-able は /əbl/、-ful は /fl/: dangerous /ˈdeɪndʒərəs/、comfortable /ˈkʌmftəbl/、useful /ˈjuːsfl/。

My first week at the new office was a little disorganised. On Monday morning my manager gave me a list of instructions, but some of them were unclear, and I misunderstood the very first one. I was supposed to reorganise the files on our shared drive. Instead, I deleted a folder that looked unnecessary. It wasn't.

For an hour nobody in the department was able to open their reports. I went to my manager and apologised for my carelessness. Luckily, she was very understanding. "It's not a disaster," she said. "Mistakes like this are almost unavoidable in your first week. The information on our website is incomplete, and that's our fault, not yours."

Our IT specialist, a cheerful young man called Raj, brought the folder back in ten minutes. Then the two of us rewrote the instructions together. We added a short description of every folder, removed the useless parts and checked everything twice. The new version is short, clear and readable, and the next newcomer won't make my mistake.

Raj was helpful from the start. He's also extremely patient — a useful quality in an office full of beginners like me.

Last year I misunderstood an email from my landlord. The message was unclear, and I thought the rent was unchanged. It wasn't. The disagreement lasted a week. I felt embarrassed and apologised for my carelessness. Now I reread every important email twice.
