Členy jste potkávali od prvních lekcí: a a an (A1 #2), a a the (A1 #14), člen u názvů a go to school (A2 #16).

Ví posluchač, o kterou věc přesně jde? the
Ne. Je to jedna počitatelná věc – „nějaká“, „jedna z“? a / an
Ne.

Věc už byla zmíněna: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. V dané situaci je jen jedna: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (v tomhle bytě), the station (v tomhle městě). Je jen jedna pro všechny: the sun, the sea, the government. Upřesňují ji slova za ní: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.

Když a nebo an. Věc se jmenuje poprvé: There's a new café in our street. Je to jedna z mnoha: She works in a bank. It's a lovely day. What a surprise!

O konkrétních věcech – s the.

obecné – bez členu konkrétní – s the
Books are expensive. The books on my desk are from the library.
I like coffee. The coffee in this café is terrible.
Children learn languages fast. The children next door are very loud.
Life is short. The life of a nurse is hard.
Music helps me relax. The music at the wedding was great.

Přídavné jméno věc konkrétní nedělá: modern art, British history, fresh bread – pořád obecné, bez členu. Kdežto upřesnění za slovem – s of, s in, vedlejší věta – ji skoro vždycky konkrétní udělá: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Ale life in London, life in a big city je život tam obecně, proto pořád bez členu.

Bez členu ze zvyku.

jídlo, nápoje, látky obecně I don't eat meat.
jazyky, předměty, sporty She speaks German. I play tennis.
jídla dne We had lunch at one.
doprava po by We went by train.
místa podle účelu (A2 #16) go to work, school, bed; be in hospital
země, města, ulice Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street
next, last – od dneška next week, last year

Vždycky s the. Třetí stupeň a řadové číslovky: the best film, the first time. Slova the same, the only. Hudební nástroje: play the piano – ale sporty bez členu: play football. Obvyklá místa zábavy: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio – ale watch TV. Části dne: in the morning, in the evening – ale at night. Národ jako celek: the British, the Romans.

another, the other, others – tentýž systém.

another + j. č. an + other ještě jeden; nějaký jiný Can I have another coffee?
the other + j. č. the + other druhý ze dvou, zbývající One shoe is here. Where's the other one?
other + mn. č. bez členu jiní obecně, nějací další Other people think differently.
the other + mn. č. the + other ostatní ze známé skupiny Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden.
others bez podstatného jména jiní obecně Some people like it; others don't.
the others bez podstatného jména všichni ostatní ze známých Two of us came by car, and the others walked.

another je an + other, proto se píše dohromady a jako a znamená „jeden z mnoha, kterýkoli“. S množným číslem nestojí; výjimka je s číslovkou: another two days – „ještě dva dny“. the other funguje jako the: posluchač ví, o který jde, protože zbyl jen ten jeden (nebo jen ti). other bez členu před množným číslem je jako obecný pojem bez členu: „jiní obecně“, na tom, kteří přesně, nezáleží. others a the others znamenají totéž, ale stojí místo podstatného jména: koncovku -s dostane jen slovo, které stojí samo. Proto other people, nebo jen others, ale ne others people. A the another neexistuje: člen už v another je. each other – „navzájem, jeden druhého“ (A2 #24) – je samostatné spojení.

Srovnejte:

I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. sestry jsou dvě – ta druhá je známá
I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. ostatní – všechny, které zbyly
I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. další z několika

A pamatujte: my, your, this, that, Tom's zabírají místo členu, a proto s ním nestojí – my car, ne the my car.

Takhle se neříká. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

I love dogs – psi obecně, bez členu; The dogs in our street bark all night – konkrétní psi; není: přídavné jméno věc konkrétní nedělá; I've got two cars: one is blue, and the other is red – auta jsou dvě a to druhé je jediné, které zbývá, proto the other.

Chyby rodilých mluvčích češtiny

přizpůsobeno vašemu jazyku
1

Člen chybí úplně

✗ I bought car

✗ She is doctor

✓ I bought a car

She's a doctor. Počitatelné slovo v jednotném čísle ale má člen (nebo my, this) vždycky.

2

the před obecným pojmem

✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything. To je opačná chyba: objeví se, jakmile si člověk the zapamatuje, a začne ho dávat před každé důležité slovo. Pozor i na I like the coffee: věta je správně, ale znamená „chutná mi tahle káva – tady“, ne „mám rád kávu“.

3

a s nepočitatelným slovem

✗ a good news, ✗ an information, ✗ a work ve významu „místo“ → ✓ some good news, some information, a job. Česky se „zpráva“, „informace“ a „práce“ počítají: „jedna informace“, „dvě práce“. V angličtině jsou news, information, work nepočitatelné, stejně jako advice (B1 #16).

4

Člen tam, kde je zvykem bez něj

✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. ✗ We had a lunch at one → ✓ We had lunch at one.

5

another s množným číslem a others před podstatným jménem

✗ another people

✗ others people

✓ other people

V angličtině stojí another jen s jednotným číslem (sedí v něm an) a others bez podstatného jména.

Výslovnost

4 min

Oba členy jsou nepřízvučné a skoro neslyšitelné: a /ə/ – nikdy ne „ej“; an /ən/.

the před souhláskou – /ðə/, před samohláskou – /ði/. Rozhoduje hláska, ne písmeno: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ – slovo začíná hláskou /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ – h se nevyslovuje. Stejně a university, ale an hour (A1 #12).

Člen splývá s následujícím slovem: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/. Žádný ráz ani pauza před samohláskou jako v češtině.

another a others: /əˈnʌðə/ – přízvuk na druhé slabice, začátek slabý jako u členu an; /ˈʌðəz/ – znělé /ð/ a /z/.

Přízvučné the /ðiː/ – jen při zdůraznění: He's the expert on this. – „On je ten hlavní odborník.“ Ve všech ostatních případech je the slabé.

Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.

The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.

The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.

People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Vzor

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
