Málfræði

18 mín.

Greinirinn hefur fylgt þér frá fyrstu lexíunum: a og an (lexía A1 #2), a og the (lexía A1 #14), greinir með heitum og go to school (lexía A2 #16). Í hvert sinn — einn bútur. Hér raðast bútarnir saman í kerfi sem leysir nær hvert tilvik.

Íslenska á engan óákveðinn greini, og ákveðni greinirinn er viðskeyti („bíllinn“), ekki sérstakt orð. Því virðist a oft vera aðeins til skrauts. Svo er ekki: a car og the car eru tvö ólík skilaboð. Það fyrra — „einhver bíll, þú hefur ekki heyrt um hann“, það síðara — „sá bíll, þú veist hvaða“.

Þrjár spurningar — í réttri röð.

spurning ef „já“
Veit hlustandinn hvaða hlut er átt við? the
Nei. Er þetta einn teljanlegur hlutur — „einhver“, „einn af“? a / an
Nei. Er þetta fleirtala eða óteljanlegt orð, í almennri merkingu? enginn greinir

Þegar hlustandinn veit hvaða hlut er átt við. Hluturinn hefur þegar verið nefndur: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Hann er einn í þessum aðstæðum: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (í þessari íbúð), the station (í þessum bæ). Hann er einn fyrir alla: the sun, the sea, the government. Orðin á eftir honum afmarka hann: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.

Þegar a eða an. Hluturinn er nefndur í fyrsta sinn: There's a new café in our street. Hann er einn af mörgum: She works in a bank. Þetta er starf eða lýsing: She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! Og í merkingunni „í“, „á“: twice a week, £12 an hour.

Um tiltekna hluti — með the.

almennt — án greinis tiltekið — með the
Books are expensive. The books on my desk are from the library.
I like coffee. The coffee in this café is terrible.
Children learn languages fast. The children next door are very loud.
Life is short. The life of a nurse is hard.
Music helps me relax. The music at the wedding was great.

Lýsingarorð gerir hlutinn ekki tiltekinn: modern art, British history, fresh bread — áfram almennt, án greinis. En afmörkun á eftir orðinu — með of, með in, tilvísunarsetning — gerir það nær alltaf: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. En life in London, life in a big city er lífið þar almennt, og því áfram án greinis.

Án greinis af vana.

matur, drykkir, efni almennt I don't eat meat.
tungumál, námsgreinar, íþróttir She speaks German. I play tennis.
máltíðir We had lunch at one.
farartæki á eftir by We went by train.
staðir eftir hlutverki (lexía A2 #16) go to work, school, bed; be in hospital
lönd, borgir, götur Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street
next, last — miðað við daginn í dag next week, last year

Alltaf með the. Efsta stig og raðtölur: the best film, the first time. Orðin the same, the only. Hljóðfæri: play the piano — en íþróttir án greinis: play football. Venjulegir skemmtistaðir: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — en watch TV. Hlutar sólarhringsins: in the morning, in the evening — en at night. Þjóð í heild: the British, the Romans.

another, the other, others — sama kerfið.

another + et. an + other einn enn; einhver annar Can I have another coffee?
the other + et. the + other sá seinni af tveimur, sá sem eftir er One shoe is here. Where's the other one?
other + ft. enginn greinir aðrir almennt, einhverjir fleiri Other people think differently.
the other + ft. the + other hinir úr þekktum hópi Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden.
others án nafnorðs aðrir almennt Some people like it; others don't.
the others án nafnorðs allir hinir úr þekktum hópi Two of us came by car, and the others walked.

another er an + other, þess vegna er það skrifað í einu orði og merkir, eins og a, „einn af mörgum, hver sem er“. Það stendur ekki með fleirtölu; undantekning er með tölu: another two days — „tveir dagar í viðbót“. the other virkar eins og the: hlustandinn veit hvaða hlut er átt við, því aðeins hann er eftir (eða aðeins þeir). other án greinis á undan fleirtölu er eins og almennt hugtak án greinis: „aðrir almennt“, hverjir nákvæmlega skiptir ekki máli. others og the others merkja það sama, en standa í stað nafnorðs: endinguna -s fær aðeins orð sem stendur eitt. Þess vegna other people eða bara others, en ekki others people. Og the another er ekki til: greinirinn er þegar í another. each other — „hvort annað“ (lexía A2 #24) — er sérstakt orðasamband.

Berðu saman:

I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. systurnar eru tvær — sú seinni er þekkt
I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. hinar — allar sem eftir eru
I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. ein enn af nokkrum

Að þýða. Íslenska setningin gefur oft vísbendingu. Nafnorð með greini („bíllinn“), „sá“, „sá sem við töluðum um“ — oft the. „Einn“, „einhver“, „einn af“ — a. En varastu: um óhlutstætt hugtak almennt hefur íslenskan oft greini, enskan ekki — „lífið er stutt“ er Life is short. Ef ekkert af þessu á við og talað er um hluti almennt — enginn greinir. Og mundu: my, your, this, that, Tom's taka sæti greinisins og standa því ekki með honum — my car, ekki the my car, þótt íslenskan segi „bíllinn minn“, með greini.

Svona er ekki sagt. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise! Á eftir What með teljanlegu orði í eintölu þarf a, þótt íslenskt „hvílík…“ sé án greinis.

Prófaðu kunnáttuna. Hvernig segirðu „Ég elska hunda“ og „Hundarnir í götunni okkar gelta alla nóttina“? Þarf greini í ___ British history? Hvernig segirðu „Ég á tvo bíla: annar er blár, hinn er rauður“?

sýna svörin
I love dogs — hundar almennt, án greinis; The dogs in our street bark all night — tilteknir hundar; nei: lýsingarorð gerir hlutinn ekki tiltekinn; I've got two cars: one is blue, and the other is red — bílarnir eru tveir og sá seinni er sá eini sem eftir er, því the other.

Óákveðni greinirinn gleymist

✗ I bought car

✗ She is doctor

✓ I bought a car

She's a doctor. En teljanlegt orð í eintölu hefur alltaf greini (eða my, this).

2

the með almennu hugtaki

✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The nature is the best medicine → ✓ Nature is the best medicine. Íslenskan segir „lífið er stutt“, „náttúran“, með greini, þótt átt sé við almennt; enskan hefur þá engan greini. Varastu líka I like the coffee: setningin er rétt, en merkir „mér líkar kaffið — hérna“, ekki „mér þykir kaffi gott“.

3

Óteljanleg orð talin

✗ informations

✗ a good advice

✗ a good news

✓ some information

some good advice, some good news. Á íslensku eru „upplýsingar“ í fleirtölu, og „ráð“ og „frétt“ má telja („gott ráð“, „tvær fréttir“). Á ensku eru information, advice (lexía B1 #16) og news óteljanleg: án a, og information og advice fá ekki -s.

4

„Í vinnuna“, „í rúmið“ með the

✗ I go to the work at eight → ✓ I go to work at eight. ✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. Íslenskan segir „fer í vinnuna“, „fer í skólann“, „fer í rúmið“, með greini. Á ensku eru staðir eftir hlutverki — work, school, bed — fastir liðir án greinis.

5

another með fleirtölu og others á undan nafnorði

✗ another people

✗ others people

✓ other people

„Annað fólk“ er á íslensku í eintölu, því „fólk“ er eintöluorð, og „annar“ hljómar líkt og another; í „aðrir menn“ fær orðið fleirtöluendingu, eins og others. Á ensku stendur another aðeins með eintölu (í því býr an), og others stendur án nafnorðs.

Báðir greinarnir eru áherslulausir og nær óheyranlegir: a /ə/ — aldrei eins og íslenskt „ei“; an /ən/.

the á undan samhljóði — /ðə/, á undan sérhljóði — /ði/. Hljóðið ræður, ekki bókstafurinn: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — orðið byrjar á hljóðinu /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h heyrist ekki. Eins a university, en an hour (lexía A1 #12).

Greinirinn rennur saman við næsta orð: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.

another og others: /əˈnʌðə/ — áherslan á öðru atkvæði, upphafið veikt eins og í greininum an; /ˈʌðəz/ — /ð/ eins og íslenskt „ð“, og rödduð /z/, sem íslenskan hefur ekki.

Áhersluborið the /ðiː/ — aðeins til áherslu: He's the expert on this. — „Hann er sérfræðingurinn í þessu, sá helsti.“ Í öllum öðrum tilvikum er the veikt.

Texti

5 mín.

Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.

The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.

The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.

People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.
