| the |
| a / an |
| No. És plural o no comptable, en sentit general? | sense article |
Ja se n'ha parlat: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. N'hi ha una sola en aquella situació: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (en aquest pis), the station (en aquesta ciutat). N'hi ha una sola per a tothom: the sun, the sea, the government. La concreten les paraules que la segueixen: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.
Quan a o an. Se'n parla per primera vegada: There's a new café in our street. It's a lovely day. What a surprise!
De coses concretes, amb the.
| en general — sense article | concret — amb the |
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
Un adjectiu no fa concreta una cosa: modern art, British history, fresh bread continuen sent generals, sense article. En canvi, el que concreta la paraula darrere seu —amb of, amb in, una frase de relatiu— gairebé sempre la fa concreta: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Però life in London, life in a big city és la vida d'allà en general, i per això continua sense article.
Sense article per costum.
| menjar, begudes, substàncies en general | I don't eat meat. |
| idiomes, assignatures, esports | She speaks German. I play tennis. |
| àpats | We had lunch at one. |
| transport darrere de by | We went by train. |
| llocs segons la seva funció (A2 #16) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
| països, ciutats, carrers | Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| next, last comptant des d'avui | next week, last year |
Sempre amb the. El superlatiu i els ordinals: the best film, the first time. Les paraules the same, the only. Els llocs d'oci habituals: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — però watch TV. Les parts del dia: in the morning, in the evening — però at night. Un poble sencer: the British, the Romans.
another, the other, others — el mateix sistema.
|---|---|---|---|
| another + singular | an + other | un altre, un més | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + singular | the + other | el segon de dos, el que queda | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + plural | sense article | altres en general | Other people think differently. |
| the other + plural | the + other | els altres d'un grup conegut | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | sense nom | altres en general | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | sense nom | tots els altres, els coneguts | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
another és an + other, i per això s'escriu junt i, com a, vol dir «un de tants, qualsevol». No va amb el plural; l'excepció és amb un número: another two days — «dos dies més». the other funciona com the: qui escolta sap quin és, perquè només queda aquell (o aquells). other sense article davant d'un plural és com un concepte general sense article: «altres en general», no importa quins. others i the others volen dir el mateix, però van en lloc del nom: la -s només la pren la paraula que va sola. Per això other people o només others, però no others people, encara que el català digui «altres persones» amb la mateixa forma. I the another no existeix: another ja porta l'article. each other — «l'un a l'altre» (A2 #24) — és una combinació a part.
Compara:
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff.
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. | les altres — totes les que queden |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff.
I recorda: my, your, this, that, Tom's ocupen el lloc de l'article i no hi van al costat —my car, no the my car—, tot i que en català diem «el meu cotxe».
Així no es diu. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!
Posa't a prova. Cal article a ___ British history?

✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything.
✗ She is doctor → ✓ She's a doctor. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise! «És metgessa», «quina sorpresa!»: aquí el català no hi posa article. L'anglès sí: un nom comptable en singular sempre porta a, the, my o this.
a amb els no comptables
✗ an information
✗ a good news
✗ an advice
✓ some information
some good news, some advice.
✗ the my car → ✓ my car. ✗ See you the next week → ✓ See you next week. ✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. El català hi posa article; l'anglès, no: my ja ocupa el seu lloc, i next, last i els llocs segons la seva funció hi van sense.
others davant del nom
✗ others people
✗ the others guests
✓ other people
the other guests.
the davant d'un so consonàntic és /ðə/; davant d'un so vocàlic, /ði/. Decideix el so, no la lletra: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/, perquè la paraula comença amb el so /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/, perquè la h no sona. Igual que a university, però an hour (A1 #12).
L'article s'enganxa a la paraula següent: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.
another i others: /əˈnʌðə/, amb l'accent a la segona síl·laba i el començament feble, com l'article an; /ˈʌðəz/, amb /ð/ i /z/ sonores.
the tònic, /ðiː/, només per remarcar: He's the expert on this.
Text
5 minBooks are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Escriptura
Model
There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
