Hovoriť o všeobecnom a o konkrétnom
Gramatika
18 minS členmi si sa stretával od prvých lekcií: a a an (A1 #2), a a the (A1 #14), člen pri názvoch a go to school (A2 #16).
|---|---|
| Vie poslucháč, o ktorý predmet presne ide? | the |
| Nie. Je to jeden počítateľný predmet — „nejaký“, „jeden z“? | a / an |
| Nie.
Predmet sa už spomenul: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. V danej situácii je jediný: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (v tomto byte), the station (v tomto meste). Je jediný pre všetkých: the sun, the sea, the government. Spresňujú ho slová za ním: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.
Kedy a alebo an. Predmet sa spomína prvýkrát: There's a new café in our street. Je to jeden z mnohých: She works in a bank. It's a lovely day. What a surprise!
O konkrétnych predmetoch — s the.
| všeobecné — bez člena | konkrétne — s the |
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
Prídavné meno predmet konkrétnym nerobí: modern art, British history, fresh bread — stále všeobecné, bez člena. Spresnenie za slovom — s of, s in, vedľajšia veta — však takmer vždy áno: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Ale life in London, life in a big city je život tam všeobecne, a preto stále bez člena.
Bez člena zo zvyku.
| jedlo, nápoje, látky všeobecne | I don't eat meat. |
| jazyky, školské predmety, druhy športu | She speaks German. I play tennis. |
| jedlá dňa | We had lunch at one. |
| doprava po by | We went by train. |
| miesta podľa účelu (A2 #16) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
| krajiny, mestá, ulice | Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| next, last — od dnešného dňa | next week, last year |
Vždy s the. Tretí stupeň a radové číslovky: the best film, the first time. Slová the same, the only. Hudobné nástroje: play the piano — ale druhy športu bez člena: play football. Zvyčajné miesta zábavy: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — ale watch TV. Časti dňa: in the morning, in the evening — ale at night. Národ ako celok: the British, the Romans.
another, the other, others — ten istý systém.
|---|---|---|---|
| another + j. č. | an + other | ešte jeden; nejaký iný | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + j. č. | the + other | druhý z dvoch, ten zvyšný | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + mn. č. | bez člena | iní všeobecne, nejakí ďalší | Other people think differently. |
| the other + mn. č. | the + other | ostatní zo známej skupiny | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | bez podstatného mena | iní všeobecne | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | bez podstatného mena | všetci ostatní zo známych | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
another je an + other, preto sa píše spolu a ako a znamená „jeden z mnohých, hocijaký“. S množným číslom nestojí; výnimka — s číslovkou: another two days — „ešte dva dni“. the other funguje ako the: poslucháč vie, o ktorý ide, lebo zostal už len on (alebo len oni). other bez člena pred množným číslom je ako všeobecný pojem bez člena: „iní všeobecne“, ktorí presne, nie je dôležité. others a the others znamenajú to isté, ale stoja namiesto podstatného mena: koncovku -s dostane len slovo, ktoré stojí samo. Preto other people alebo len others, ale nie others people. A the another neexistuje: člen v another už je. each other — „navzájom“ (A2 #24) — je samostatné spojenie.
Porovnaj:
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. | sestry sú dve — druhá je známa |
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. | ostatné — všetky, čo zostali |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. | ďalšia z niekoľkých |
Ako prekladať. Slovenské slová člen často napovedia. „Ten“, „ten istý“, „ten, o ktorom sme hovorili“ — to je the. „Jeden“, „nejaký“, „istý“, „jeden z“ — to je a. Ak sa podľa zmyslu nedá dosadiť ani jedno, ani druhé a reč je o predmetoch všeobecne, člen nie je. A pamätaj: my, your, this, that, Tom's zaberajú miesto člena, preto spolu s ním nestoja — my car, nie the my car.
Takto sa nehovorí. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise! Po What s počítateľným slovom v jednotnom čísle treba a.

Chyby slovensky hovoriacich
napísané pre váš jazykČlen chýba úplne
✗ I bought car
✗ She is doctor
✓ I bought a car
She's a doctor. „Kúpil som auto“, „je lekárka“ — slovenčine nič nechýba, a tak sa člen zdá ako ozdoba, ktorú možno v rýchlej reči vynechať. Počítateľné slovo v jednotnom čísle však má člen (alebo my, this) vždy.
the pred všeobecným pojmom
✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything. Opačná chyba: príde, len čo si človek the zapamätá, a začne ho dávať pred každé dôležité slovo. Pozor aj na I like the coffee: veta je správna, ale znamená „chutí mi táto káva — tu“, nie „mám rád kávu“.
a s nepočítateľným slovom
✗ a good news, ✗ an information, ✗ a work vo význame „zamestnanie“ → ✓ some good news, some information, a job. Po slovensky sa „správa“, „informácia“ aj „práca“ počítajú: „jedna informácia“, „dve práce“. V angličtine sú news, information, work nepočítateľné, rovnako ako advice (B1 #16).
Člen tam, kde sa zvyčajne nedáva
✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. ✗ We had a lunch at one → ✓ We had lunch at one.
another s množným číslom a others pred podstatným menom
✗ another people
✗ others people
✓ other people
V angličtine je another len s jednotným číslom (sedí v ňom an) a others stojí bez podstatného mena.
Výslovnosť
4 minOba členy sú neprízvučné a takmer ich nepočuť: a /ə/ — nikdy nie „ej“ ani plné slovenské „a“; an /ən/.
the pred spoluhláskou — /ðə/, pred samohláskou — /ði/. Rozhoduje hláska, nie písmeno: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — slovo začína hláskou /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h neznie. Rovnako a university, ale an hour (A1 #12).
Člen splýva s nasledujúcim slovom: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.
Prízvučné the /ðiː/ — len pri zdôraznení: He's the expert on this. — „On je ten pravý, hlavný odborník.“ Vo všetkých ostatných prípadoch je the slabé.
Text
5 minBooks are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Písanie
Šesť viet o mieste, kam často chodíš: knižnica, kaviareň, park, posilňovňa. Potrebuješ členy všetkých troch druhov, aspoň jedno všeobecné tvrdenie bez člena a jedno another, the other alebo others.
Vzor
There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
