Artikkelit ovat olleet mukana ensimmäisiltä oppitunneilta: a ja an (A1 #2), a ja the (A1 #14), artikkeli nimien kanssa ja go to school (A2 #16).

Suomessa saman eron tekee usein sanajärjestys: ”Pihalla on auto” — uusi asia, ”Auto on pihalla” — tuttu.

Ymmärtääkö kuulija, mistä asiasta tarkalleen on kyse? the
Ei. Onko kyse yhdestä laskettavasta asiasta — ”jokin”, ”yksi monista”? a / an

Asia on jo mainittu: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Se on tilanteessa ainoa: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (tässä asunnossa), the station (tässä kaupungissa). Se on ainoa kaikille: the sun, the sea, the government. Sitä tarkentavat sen jälkeen tulevat sanat: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.

Kun a tai an. Asia mainitaan ensimmäistä kertaa: There's a new café in our street. Se on yksi monista: She works in a bank. Se on ammatti tai kuvaus: She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! Ja merkityksessä ”kohden”: twice a week — kahdesti viikossa, £12 an hour — 12 puntaa tunnilta.

yleinen — ilman artikkelia tietty — the
Books are expensive. The books on my desk are from the library.
I like coffee. The coffee in this café is terrible.
Children learn languages fast. The children next door are very loud.
Life is short. The life of a nurse is hard.
Music helps me relax. The music at the wedding was great.

Adjektiivi ei tee asiasta tiettyä: modern art, British history, fresh bread — yhä yleistä, ilman artikkelia. Sen sijaan sanan jälkeinen tarkennus — of- tai in-sanalla, relatiivilauseella — tekee lähes aina: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Mutta life in London, life in a big city on elämää siellä yleensä, joten yhä ilman artikkelia.

Tottumuksesta ilman artikkelia.

ruoka, juomat, aineet yleensä I don't eat meat.
kielet, oppiaineet, urheilulajit She speaks German. I play tennis.
ateriat We had lunch at one.
kulkuneuvo by-sanan jälkeen We went by train.
paikat käyttötarkoituksensa mukaan (A2 #16) go to work, school, bed; be in hospital
maat, kaupungit, kadut Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street
next, last — tästä päivästä laskien next week, last year

Aina the. Superlatiivi ja järjestysluvut: the best film, the first time. Sanat the same, the only. Soittimet: play the piano — mutta urheilulajit ilman artikkelia: play football. Tutut huvipaikat: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — mutta watch TV. Vuorokaudenajat: in the morning, in the evening — mutta at night. Kansa kokonaisuutena: the British, the Romans.

another, the other, others — sama järjestelmä. — vielä yhden), the other (”toinen kenkä” — kahdesta jäljelle jäänyt) tai järjestysluku (”toinen kerta” — the second time).

another + yks. an + other vielä yksi; jokin toinen Can I have another coffee?
the other + yks. the + other kahdesta toinen, jäljelle jäänyt One shoe is here. Where's the other one?
other + mon. ilman artikkelia muut yleensä, jotkut muut Other people think differently.
the other + mon. the + other tunnetun joukon muut Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden.
others ilman substantiivia muut yleensä Some people like it; others don't.
the others ilman substantiivia kaikki muut tunnetuista Two of us came by car, and the others walked.

another on an + other, siksi se kirjoitetaan yhteen ja tarkoittaa a-artikkelin tavoin ”yksi monista, mikä tahansa”. Monikon kanssa sitä ei käytetä; poikkeus on luvun kanssa: another two days — ”vielä kaksi päivää”. the other toimii kuten the: kuulija tietää, mikä tarkalleen, koska jäljellä on vain se (tai vain ne). other ilman artikkelia monikon edessä on kuin yleiskäsite ilman artikkelia: ”muut yleensä”, ei väliä mitkä. others ja the others tarkoittavat samaa, mutta ovat substantiivin paikalla: -s-päätteen saa vain sana, joka on yksin. Siksi other people tai pelkkä others, mutta ei others people. Eikä the another ole mahdollinen: sanassa another artikkeli on jo. each other — ”toisiaan” (A2 #24) — on oma ilmauksensa.

Vertaa:

I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. siskoja on kaksi — toinen on tunnettu
I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. muut — kaikki jäljelle jääneet
I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. vielä yksi useammasta

Miten kääntää. Suomen sanat vihjaavat usein artikkeliin. ”Yksi”, ”eräs”, ”jokin”, ”yksi monista” — se on a. Myös sanajärjestys auttaa: lauseen alussa oleva subjekti on yleensä tuttu (”Kirja on pöydällä” — The book is on the table), lopussa oleva uusi (”Pöydällä on kirja” — There's a book on the table). Ja muista: my, your, this, that, Tom's ovat artikkelin paikalla, joten niiden kanssa artikkelia ei käytetä — my car, ei the my car.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”Rakastan koiria” ja ”Meidän kadun koirat haukkuvat koko yön”? Tarvitaanko artikkelia: ___ British history? Miten sanotaan ”Minulla on kaksi autoa: toinen on sininen, toinen punainen”?

näytä vastaukset
I love dogs — koirat yleensä, ilman artikkelia; The dogs in our street bark all night — tietyt koirat; ei tarvita: adjektiivi ei tee asiasta tiettyä; I've got two cars: one is blue, and the other is red — autoja on kaksi, ja toinen on ainoa jäljelle jäävä, siksi the other.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

Artikkeli puuttuu kokonaan

✗ I bought car

✗ She is doctor

✓ I bought a car

She's a doctor. Suomen ”ostin auton”, ”hän on lääkäri” eivät tarvitse mitään lisäsanaa, ja nopeasti puhuessa artikkeli jää pois ensimmäisenä. Laskettavalla sanalla yksikössä on kuitenkin aina artikkeli (tai my, this).

2

the yleiskäsitteen edessä

✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything.

3

a tai monikko ei-laskettavalla sanalla

✗ a good news, ✗ informations, ✗ a work (työpaikka) → ✓ some good news, some information, a job.

4

”Toinen” on aina sama sana

✗ I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff.

✓ …and the other lives in Cardiff.

Englannissa valinta riippuu siitä, onko jäljellä vain yksi (the other) vai useampia (another).

5

others people ja another people

✗ others people

✗ another people

✓ other people

Suomen ”muut ihmiset” — kummassakin sanassa on monikko, ja monikon -s siirtyy myös sanaan other. Englannissa other ei taivu substantiivin edessä, others on aina yksin, ja another käy vain yksikön kanssa (siinä on an).

Ääntäminen

4 min

Molemmat artikkelit ovat painottomia ja lähes kuulumattomia: a /ə/ — ei koskaan /eɪ/ kuten kirjaimen nimi; an /ən/.

the konsonanttiäänteen edessä — /ðə/, vokaaliäänteen edessä — /ði/. Ratkaisee äänne, ei kirjain: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — sana alkaa äänteellä /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h ei kuulu. Samoin a university, mutta an hour (A1 #12).

Artikkeli sulautuu seuraavaan sanaan: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.

another ja others: /əˈnʌðə/ — paino toisella tavulla, alku heikko kuten artikkelissa an; /ˈʌðəz/ — soinnilliset /ð/ ja /z/.

Painollinen the /ðiː/ — vain korostettaessa: He's the expert on this. — ”Hän on juuri se asiantuntija, tärkein”. Kaikissa muissa tapauksissa the on heikko.

Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.

The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.

The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.

People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Malli

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
