Ascultătorul știe despre ce lucru anume e vorba? the
Nu. E un singur lucru numărabil — „unul oarecare”, „unul dintre”? a / an

Lucrul a mai fost pomenit: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. E singurul în situația dată: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (în apartamentul ăsta), the station (în orașul ăsta). E unul singur pentru toți: the sun, the sea, the government. Îl precizează cuvintele de după el: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.

Când a sau an. Lucrul e numit prima dată: There's a new café in our street. E unul dintre mulți: She works in a bank. E o meserie sau o descriere: She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise!

Despre lucruri anume — cu the.

general — fără articol concret — cu the
Books are expensive. The books on my desk are from the library.
I like coffee. The coffee in this café is terrible.
Children learn languages fast. The children next door are very loud.
Life is short. The life of a nurse is hard.
Music helps me relax. The music at the wedding was great.

Adjectivul nu face lucrul concret: modern art, British history, fresh bread — tot general, fără articol. Dar o precizare după cuvânt — cu of, cu in, o propoziție relativă — aproape întotdeauna îl face: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Totuși life in London, life in a big city e viața de acolo în general, de aceea rămâne fără articol.

Fără articol, prin obișnuință.

mâncare, băuturi, substanțe în general I don't eat meat.
limbi, materii, sporturi She speaks German. I play tennis.
mesele zilei We had lunch at one.
mijlocul de transport după by We went by train.
locuri după destinație (A2 #16) go to work, school, bed; be in hospital
țări, orașe, străzi Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street
next, last — socotit de azi next week, last year

Întotdeauna cu the. Superlativul și numeralele ordinale: the best film, the first time. Cuvintele the same, the only. Instrumentele muzicale: play the piano — dar sporturile fără articol: play football. Locurile obișnuite de distracție: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — dar watch TV. Părțile zilei: in the morning, in the evening — dar at night. Un popor în întregime: the British, the Romans.

another, the other, others — același sistem.

another + singular an + other încă unul; un altul, oarecare Can I have another coffee?
the other + singular the + other al doilea din doi, cel rămas One shoe is here. Where's the other one?
other + plural fără articol alții în general, niște alții Other people think differently.
the other + plural the + other ceilalți dintr-un grup cunoscut Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden.
others fără substantiv alții în general Some people like it; others don't.
the others fără substantiv toți ceilalți dintre cei cunoscuți Two of us came by car, and the others walked.

another e an + other, de aceea se scrie legat și, ca a, înseamnă „unul dintre mulți, oricare”. Cu pluralul nu stă; excepția — cu un număr: another two days — „încă două zile”. the other funcționează ca the: ascultătorul știe care anume, pentru că a rămas doar el (sau doar ei). other fără articol înaintea pluralului e ca noțiunea generală fără articol: „alții în general”, nu contează care. others și the others înseamnă același lucru, dar țin locul substantivului: terminația -s o primește doar cuvântul care stă singur. De aceea other people sau simplu others, dar nu others people. Iar the another nu există: articolul e deja în another. each other — „unul pe altul” (A2 #24) — e o îmbinare aparte.

Compară:

I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. surori sunt două — a doua e cunoscută
I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. celelalte — toate câte au rămas
I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. încă una dintre mai multe

Cum traduci. Articolul românesc ajută, dar numai pe jumătate. „Un”, „o”, „un oarecare”, „unul dintre” — asta e a. „Acesta”, „acela”, „cel despre care am vorbit” — asta e the. Și ține minte: my, your, this, that, Tom's ocupă locul articolului, de aceea nu stau împreună cu el — my car, nu the my car.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

I love dogs — câinii în general, fără articol; The dogs in our street bark all night — niște câini anume; nu trebuie: adjectivul nu face lucrul concret; I've got two cars: one is blue, and the other is red — mașini sunt două, iar a doua e singura rămasă, de aceea the other.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

the la ceva general

„Viața e scurtă”, „banii nu sunt totul” → ✗ The life is short, ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Life is short, Money isn't everything.

2

Meseria fără a

„E profesoară”, „sunt inginer” → ✗ She is teacher, ✗ I am engineer → ✓ She's a teacher, I'm an engineer.

3

a cu nenumărabilele

„O informație”, „o veste bună”, „un sfat” → ✗ an information, ✗ a good news, ✗ an advice → ✓ some information, some good news, some advice.

4

Articolul din îmbinările fixe

„Cu autobuzul”, „am luat prânzul”, „săptămâna viitoare” → ✗ by the bus, ✗ We had the lunch at one, ✗ the next week → ✓ by bus, We had lunch at one, next week. Româna pune aici articol hotărât, engleza — niciunul.

5

other la plural

„Alți oameni”, „alte persoane” → ✗ others people, ✗ another people → ✓ other people.

4 min

the înaintea unui sunet consonantic — /ðə/, înaintea unui sunet vocalic — /ði/. Hotărăște sunetul, nu litera: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — cuvântul începe cu sunetul /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h nu se aude. La fel a university, dar an hour (A1 #12).

Articolul se leagă de cuvântul următor: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.

another și others: /əˈnʌðə/ — accentul pe silaba a doua, începutul slab, ca la articolul an; /ˈʌðəz/ — /ð/ și /z/ sonore.

the accentuat, /ðiː/, — doar pentru evidențiere: He's the expert on this. — „El e specialistul, cel mai important”. În toate celelalte cazuri the e slab.

Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.

The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.

The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.

People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Model

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
