| the |
| a / an |
I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Could you close the door?, the kitchen (ในอพาร์ตเมนต์นี้), the station (ในเมืองนี้) มีอยู่สิ่งเดียวสำหรับทุกคน: the sun, the sea, the government มีคำที่ตามหลังมาระบุ: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales
There's a new café in our street. She works in a bank. She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! และในความหมาย “ต่อ”: twice a week, £12 an hour
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
คำคุณศัพท์ไม่ได้ทำให้สิ่งนั้นเฉพาะเจาะจง: modern art, British history, fresh bread — ยังคงเป็นความหมายทั่วไป ไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม แต่คำที่ระบุตามหลัง — กับ of, กับ in, อนุประโยค — แทบจะทำให้ เฉพาะเจาะจงเสมอ: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought แต่ life in London, life in a big city คือชีวิตที่นั่นโดยทั่วไป จึงยังคงไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม
I don't eat meat. |
She speaks German. I play tennis. |
We had lunch at one. |
| ยานพาหนะหลัง by | We went by train. |
| สถานที่ตามหน้าที่ของมัน (A2 บทที่ 16) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| next, last — นับจากวันนี้ | next week, last year |
มี the เสมอ ขั้นสูงสุดและเลขลำดับที่: the best film, the first time คำว่า the same, the only เครื่องดนตรี: play the piano — แต่กีฬา ไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม: play football สถานที่บันเทิงที่ไปเป็นประจำ: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — แต่ watch TV ช่วงเวลาของวัน: in the morning, in the evening — แต่ at night ชนชาติทั้งชาติ: the British, the Romans
another, the other, others — ระบบเดียวกัน “อีก…
|---|---|---|---|
| another + เอกพจน์ | an + other | อีกหนึ่ง; อันอื่นอันไหนก็ได้ | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + เอกพจน์ | the + other | อันที่สองจากสองอัน อันที่เหลือ | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + พหูพจน์ | ไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม | อื่น ๆ โดยทั่วไป | Other people think differently. |
| the other + พหูพจน์ | the + other | ที่เหลือจากกลุ่มที่รู้กันอยู่ | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | ไม่มีคำนาม | คนอื่น อันอื่นโดยทั่วไป | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | ไม่มีคำนาม | ที่เหลือทั้งหมดจากกลุ่มที่รู้กันอยู่ | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. |
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. |
— คือ a ถ้าใส่ทั้งสองแบบไม่ได้ตามความหมาย และพูดถึงสิ่งของโดยทั่วไป — ไม่มีคำนำหน้านาม และจำไว้ว่า my, your, this, that, Tom's อยู่ในตำแหน่งของคำนำหน้านาม จึงไม่ใช้คู่กัน — my car ไม่ใช่ the my car
ไม่พูดแบบนี้ ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

✗ I bought car
✗ She is doctor
✓ I bought a car
✗ I love dog
✗ Book is expensive
✓ I love dogs
✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything เป็นข้อผิดพลาดกลับด้าน: พอจำเรื่อง the ได้ ก็เริ่มใส่ หน้าคำสำคัญทุกคำ ระวัง I like the coffee ด้วย: ประโยคถูก แต่แปลว่า “ฉันชอบกาแฟที่นี่” ไม่ใช่ “ฉันชอบกาแฟ”
✗ a good news
✗ an information
✓ some good news
✗ another people
✗ others people
✓ other people
the หน้าเสียงพยัญชนะ — /ðə/ หน้าเสียงสระ — /ði/ ตัดสินที่เสียง ไม่ใช่ตัวอักษร: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — คำนี้ขึ้นต้นด้วยเสียง /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h ไม่ออกเสียง เช่นเดียวกับ a university แต่ an hour (A1 บทที่ 12)
คำนำหน้านามออกเสียงต่อเนื่องกับคำถัดไป: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/
another และ others: /əˈnʌðə/ — เสียงหนักที่พยางค์ที่สอง ต้นคำเบาเหมือนคำนำหน้านาม an; /ˈʌðəz/ — /ð/ และ /z/ เป็นเสียงก้อง
He's the expert on this.
Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
