Grammatika
18 minArtikleid oled kohanud esimestest tundidest peale: a ja an (A1 #2), a ja the (A1 #14), artikkel nimede juures ja go to school (A2 #16).
See pole nii: a car ja the car on kaks eri sõnumit. Esimene — „mingi auto, sa pole sellest veel kuulnud“, teine — „seesama, sa tead, milline“.
Kolm küsimust — järjekorras.
| küsimus | kui „jah“ |
|---|---|
| Kas kuulaja saab aru, milline ese täpselt? | the |
| Ei. Kas see on üks loendatav ese — „mingi“, „üks paljudest“? | a / an |
| Ei. Kas see on mitmus või loendamatu, üldises tähenduses? | artiklita |
Kui kuulaja saab aru, milline täpselt. Eset on juba mainitud: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. See on selles olukorras ainus: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (selles korteris), the station (selles linnas). See on kõigile üks: the sun, the sea, the government. Seda täpsustavad sõnad selle järel: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.
Millal a või an. Eset nimetatakse esimest korda: There's a new café in our street. See on üks paljudest: She works in a bank. See on amet või kirjeldus: She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! Ja tähenduses „-s, kohta“: twice a week — „kaks korda nädalas“, £12 an hour — „12 naela tunnis“.
Üldine ja konkreetne — tunni põhipaar. Eesti keeles on „raamatud“ lauses „raamatud on kallid“ ja lauses „raamatud minu laual on raamatukogust“ üks ja sama sõna. Inglise keeles on need kaks eri juhtumit. Asjadest üldiselt, kogu liigist räägitakse artiklita — mitmuses või loendamatu sõnaga. Konkreetsetest asjadest — the-ga.
| üldine — artiklita | konkreetne — the-ga |
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
Omadussõna ei tee eset konkreetseks: modern art, British history, fresh bread — ikka üldine, artiklita. Täpsustus sõna järel aga — of-iga, in-iga, kõrvallausega — teeb peaaegu alati: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Kuid life in London, life in a big city on elu seal üldiselt, seepärast ikka artiklita.
Harjumuspäraselt artiklita.
| toit, joogid, ained üldiselt | I don't eat meat. |
| keeled, õppeained, spordialad | She speaks German. I play tennis. |
| söögikorrad | We had lunch at one. |
| transport by järel | We went by train. |
| kohad otstarbe järgi (A2 #16) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
| riigid, linnad, tänavad | Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| next, last — tänasest päevast lähtudes | next week, last year |
Alati the-ga. Ülivõrre ja järgarvud: the best film, the first time. Sõnad the same, the only. Muusikariistad: play the piano — kuid spordialad artiklita: play football. Harjumuspärased meelelahutuskohad: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — kuid watch TV. Ööpäeva osad: in the morning, in the evening — kuid at night. Rahvas tervikuna: the British, the Romans.
another, the other, others — sama süsteem. Eesti „teine“, „veel üks“, „ülejäänud“, „teised“, „muud“ jagunevad inglise keeles mitmeks vormiks. Valida aitavad samad kolm küsimust mis artikli puhul: nende sõnade sees on artikkel kas juba olemas või puudub samadel põhjustel.
| vorm | mis on sees | tähendus | näide |
|---|---|---|---|
| another + ainsus | an + other | veel üks; mingi teine | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + ainsus | the + other | teine kahest, järelejäänu | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + mitmus | artiklita | teised üldiselt, mingid muud | Other people think differently. |
| the other + mitmus | the + other | ülejäänud teadaolevast rühmast | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | nimisõnata | teised üldiselt | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | nimisõnata | kõik ülejäänud teadaolevatest | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
another on an + other, seepärast kirjutatakse see kokku ja tähendab nagu a „üks paljudest, ükskõik milline“. Mitmusega see ei seisa; erand — arvuga: another two days — „veel kaks päeva“. the other töötab nagu the: kuulaja teab, milline täpselt, sest alles on jäänud ainult see (või ainult need). other ilma artiklita mitmuse ees on nagu üldmõiste artiklita: „teised üldiselt“, millised täpselt — pole oluline. others ja the others tähendavad sama, kuid seisavad nimisõna asemel: lõpu -s saab ainult sõna, mis seisab üksi. Seepärast other people või lihtsalt others, kuid mitte others people. Ja the another ei ole olemas: artikkel on another-is juba sees. each other — „üksteist“ (A2 #24) — on omaette ühend.
Võrdle:
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. | õdesid on kaks — teine on teada |
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. | ülejäänud — kõik, kes alles jäid |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. | veel üks mitmest |
Kuidas tõlkida. Eesti sõnad vihjavad sageli artiklile. „See“, „seesama“, „see, millest rääkisime“ — see on the. „Üks“, „mingi“, „keegi“, „üks neist“ — see on a. Kui tähenduse järgi ei sobi ei üks ega teine ja jutt on asjadest üldiselt — artiklit pole. Ja pea meeles: my, your, this, that, Tom's võtavad artikli koha, seepärast ei seisa nad koos sellega — my car, mitte the my car.
Nii ei öelda. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise! What järel on loendatava ainsuse sõnaga vaja a-d.
Kontrolli ennast. Kuidas öelda „Ma armastan koeri“ ja „Koerad meie tänaval hauguvad terve öö“? Kas ___ British history ees on artiklit vaja? Kuidas öelda „Mul on kaks autot: üks on sinine, teine punane“?

Eesti keele kõneleja vead
kirjutatud sinu keele jaoksArtikkel puudub täiesti
✗ I bought car
✗ She is doctor
✓ I bought a car
She's a doctor. Eesti keeles artikleid pole, ja artikkel tundub ehtena, mille võib kiiresti rääkides ära jätta. Kuid loendatava ainsuse sõna ees on artikkel (või my, this) alati.
the üldmõiste ees
✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything. Ettevaatust ka I like the coffee-ga: lause on õige, kuid tähendab „mulle meeldib see kohv — siin“, mitte „ma armastan kohvi“.
a loendamatu sõnaga
✗ a good news, ✗ an information, ✗ a work „töökoha“ tähenduses → ✓ some good news, some information, a job. Eesti „uudis“ on loendatav: „üks hea uudis“, „kaks uudist“; „töö“ on nii tegevus kui ka töökoht: „leidsin uue töö“. Inglise keeles on news, information, work loendamatud, nagu ka advice (B1 #16).
Artikkel seal, kus harjumuspäraselt seda pole
✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. ✗ We had a lunch at one → ✓ We had lunch at one. Kui artikkel on juba harjumuseks saanud, tundub fraas ilma selleta poolik. Kuid söögikorrad ja kohad „otstarbe järgi“ on püsivad artiklita juhud.
another mitmusega ja others nimisõna ees
✗ another people
✗ others people
✓ other people
Inglise keeles on another ainult ainsusega (selles on an), other mitmuse ees lõppu ei saa, ja others seisab ilma nimisõnata.
Hääldus
4 minMõlemad artiklid on rõhuta ja peaaegu kuuldamatud: a /ə/ — mitte kunagi /eɪ/, nagu tähte nimetades; an /ən/.
the kaashäälikuga algava sõna ees — /ðə/, täishäälikuga algava ees — /ði/. Otsustab häälik, mitte täht: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — sõna algab häälikuga /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h ei kõla. Samuti a university, kuid an hour (A1 #12).
Artikkel sulandub järgmise sõnaga: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.
another ja others: /əˈnʌðə/ — rõhk teisel silbil, algus nõrk nagu artiklil an; /ˈʌðəz/ — helilised /ð/ ja /z/, mitte /s/ lõpus.
Rõhuline the /ðiː/ — ainult esiletõstmisel: He's the expert on this. — „Tema on just see, peamine asjatundja.“ Kõigil muudel juhtudel on the nõrk.
Tekst
5 minBooks are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Kuus lauset kohast, kus sa sageli käid: raamatukogu, kohvik, park, jõusaal. Vaja on kõiki kolme liiki artikleid, vähemalt üht üldist väidet artiklita ja üht another, the other või others.
Näidis
There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
