In A2 #21 hai imparato due elenchi: dopo certi verbi viene la forma in -ing (enjoy reading, finish writing), dopo altri to + verbo (want to learn, decide to change). It started raining = It started to rain.

stop. stop + -ing — smettere, chiudere con qualcosa: He stopped smoking ten years ago. — «Ha smesso di fumare dieci anni fa». Stop talking, please. — «Smettete di parlare, per favore». It's stopped raining. — «Ha smesso di piovere». stop + to — fermarsi, interrompere quello che si sta facendo per fare un'altra cosa: On the way home he stopped to buy some bread.

Did you remember to buy milk? Prima ti sei ricordato, poi l'hai fatto.

forget. forget + to — dimenticarsi di fare; la cosa non è stata fatta: I forgot to call her. — «Mi sono dimenticato di chiamarla». Don't forget to send the email. forget + -ing compare quasi sempre in I'll never forget… — per un'impressione forte: I'll never forget seeing the sea for the first time.

try. try + to — sforzarsi, cercare di; la cosa è difficile e potrebbe non riuscire: I tried to open the window, but it was stuck.

— «Mi pento di aver venduto la mia vecchia macchina». regret + to si trova quasi solo negli annunci ufficiali: We regret to inform you that the flight has been cancelled.

Tabella riassuntiva:

verbo + -ing + to
stop He stopped smoking. — ha smesso He stopped to smoke. — si è fermato a fumare
remember I remember locking it. — mi ricordo di averla chiusa Remember to lock it. — ricordati di chiuderla
forget I'll never forget meeting her. — un'impressione I forgot to call her. — non l'ho chiamata
try Try restarting it. — prova questo metodo I tried to open it. — ci ho provato, con fatica
regret I regret saying that. — mi pento di averlo detto We regret to inform you…

I remember posting the letter. prima l'ho spedita, adesso me ne ricordo
I remembered to post the letter. prima me ne sono ricordato, poi l'ho spedita

La negazione va davanti a -ing o davanti a to: I regret not learning to swim. Try not to worry.

in italiano in inglese
prova a (come metodo) try + -ing

Già successa — -ing, davanti — to.

✗ I remember to lock the door yesterday → ✓ I remember locking the door yesterday.

Che cosa vuol dire She stopped to talk to me? Che cosa ti consigliano in Try switching it off and on again?

mostra le risposte
si è fermata per parlare con me; Remember to buy some bread o Don't forget to buy some bread; di provare a spegnerlo e riaccenderlo — come metodo per farlo funzionare.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

«Ho smesso di fumare» con to

He stopped to smoke vuol dire «si è fermato a fumare». In italiano dopo «smettere di» viene l'infinito, e in inglese diventa to. Qui questa abitudine dà il senso opposto.

2

«Di aver fatto» con to

«Mi ricordo di averlo incontrato a Parigi l'anno scorso», «mi pento di aver venduto la macchina» → ✗ I remember to meet him in Paris last year, ✗ I remember to have met him in Paris, ✗ I regret to have sold my car → ✓ I remember meeting him in Paris last year, I regret selling my car.

3

remember per «ricordare a qualcuno»

«Ricordami di chiamarla» → ✗ Remember me to call her → ✓ Remind me to call her.

Se vuoi dire che ci hai provato e non ci sei riuscito, è più abituale ✓ I tried to call her, but she didn't answer.

stopped to smoke /stɒpt tə ˈsməʊk/ — to atono

Testo

5 min

When I was at university, I smoked, I ate badly and I never did any sport. Then, at twenty-five, I decided to change everything.

First, I stopped smoking. It was hard. For months, every time I walked past a newsagent's, I wanted to stop to buy cigarettes. I tried to give up three times before it finally worked. What helped in the end? A friend told me to try chewing gum — and it worked.

Then I started learning Spanish. I tried learning with an app, but I often forgot to open it. So I tried going to evening classes instead, and that was much better. I still remember sitting in that cold classroom on Tuesday nights, trying to understand the teacher.

I'm not perfect. I sometimes forget to do my homework, and last week I forgot to take my book to class. But I don't regret starting. I'll never forget having my first real conversation in Spanish, in a little café in Seville.

My only regret? I regret giving up the piano at twelve. Maybe I'll try to start again next year.
