Grammatica
Al suo posto vengono la persona e to + verbo: I want you to call me. Questo modello lo conosci dal discorso indiretto: asked me to wait (B1 #15), advised me to rest (B1 #16).
Voglio che tu: verbo + chi + to + verbo.
| I want you to call me tonight. | Voglio che tu mi chiami stasera. |
| My parents wanted me to become a doctor. | I miei genitori volevano che diventassi medico. |
| I'd like you to meet my sister. | Vorrei presentarti mia sorella. |
| Would you like me to help? | Vuole che la aiuti? |
| We expect everyone to be on time. | Ci aspettiamo che tutti arrivino puntuali. |
| I need you to sign here, please. | Ho bisogno che firmi qui, per favore. |
| She doesn't want us to worry. | Non vuole che ci preoccupiamo. |
Dopo il verbo il pronome va nella forma di complemento: me, you, him, her, us, them. La negazione di solito va con want: I don't want you to go suona più naturale di I want you not to go. Would you like me to…? (A2 #12).
Costringere, permettere, aiutare: make, let, help. Dopo make e let il verbo va senza to, come dopo un verbo modale.
| The teacher made us rewrite the essay. |
| That film always makes me cry. | Quel film mi fa sempre piangere. |
| My parents let me stay up late at weekends. | Nel fine settimana i miei genitori mi lasciavano stare alzato fino a tardi. |
| Let me help you. | Lascia che ti aiuti. |
| Can you help me carry these boxes? | Mi aiuti a portare queste scatole? (= help me to carry) |
Lo conosci da Let's (A1 #16): Let's go è let us go, «lasciaci andare».
get + chi + to — convincere, riuscire a far fare. Nella conversazione britannica è una forma molto frequente: I'll get Tom to fix it. — «Lo faccio riparare a Tom». I couldn't get him to listen. — «Non sono riuscito a farlo ascoltare». A differenza di make, get vuole to.
| They let us leave early. | senza to |
| They allowed us to leave early.
Al passivo make prende to: We were made to wait for an hour. We were allowed to leave early. — «Ci hanno lasciato uscire prima». Ne viene una coppia: They let us leave early — We were allowed to leave early.
I pronomi riflessivi — «me stesso» e «da solo».
| I — myself | we — ourselves |
| you — yourself | you — yourselves (a più persone) |
| he — himself, she — herself, it — itself | they — themselves |
Hanno tre compiti.
L'azione ricade su chi la fa — «mi», «ti», «si»: I cut myself. — «Mi sono tagliato». Did you hurt yourself? — «Ti sei fatto male?». She taught herself Italian. — «Ha imparato l'italiano da sola». E due formule di cortesia: Help yourself! — «Serviti pure!», Enjoy yourselves! — «Divertitevi!».
«Io stesso», proprio io e non un altro — per mettere in risalto, alla fine della frase o subito dopo il nome: I'll do it myself. — «Lo faccio io». Did you make this cake yourself? The town itself is small, but the beaches are beautiful. — «La città in sé è piccola…».
by myself — «da solo, senza compagnia; senza aiuto»: I live by myself. — «Vivo da solo». She built the website by herself. Lo stesso vuol dire on my own: I did it on my own.
Molti verbi riflessivi italiani in inglese vanno senza pronome: wash — lavarsi, get dressed — vestirsi, relax — rilassarsi, feel — sentirsi, worry — preoccuparsi, meet — incontrarsi, hurry — sbrigarsi. myself si mette solo quando l'azione ricade davvero su chi la fa e la cosa conta: I cut myself, ma I washed and got dressed.
Così non si dice. ✗ I want he to come → ✓ I want him to come. Dopo want ci vuole la forma di complemento: him, non he.
Mettiti alla prova. Come si dice «Vuole che la aiuti?»? Che cosa non va in She let me to use her car?

✗ I want that you call me → ✓ I want you to call me. ✗ Would you like that I open the window? → ✓ Would you like me to open the window? «Voglio che mi chiami», «vuoi che apra la finestra?»: in italiano c'è «che» con il congiuntivo, e la frase passa in inglese parola per parola. Dopo want e would like questo that non c'è.
«Lasciare» tradotto con leave
✗ My parents didn't leave me go out
✓ My parents didn't let me go out
«Lasciare» vuol dire sia «andarsene, abbandonare» sia «permettere». L'inglese ha due verbi: leave — andarsene o lasciare una cosa da qualche parte; «lasciar fare» — let.
to dopo make e let
✗ He made me to wait → ✓ He made me wait. ✗ My parents didn't let me to go out → ✓ My parents didn't let me go out. Quasi tutti i verbi di questo modello vogliono to — want me to, ask me to, allow me to — e anche «costringere a», «permettere di» hanno la loro preposizione. Ma make e let sono eccezioni.
myself con i verbi riflessivi
✗ I feel myself much better
✓ I feel much better
«Mi sento», «rilassati», «non ti preoccupare», «sbrigati»: il «mi» o il «ti» italiano cerca un posto anche in inglese. Ma feel, relax, worry, hurry vanno senza pronome.
Pronuncia
4 minIl pronome tra due verbi è atono e si riduce:
| want him to | /ˈwɒnt ɪm tə/ |
| made her wait | /ˈmeɪd ə ˈweɪt/ |
| let me help | /ˈlet mi ˈhelp/ |
Testo
5 minMy first job was in a small café in Brighton when I was seventeen. The owner, Mrs Price, was very strict. She made us wear a white shirt every day, and she never let us use our phones behind the counter. She expected everyone to arrive ten minutes early, and if you were late, she made you stay ten minutes longer.
In the first week she wanted me to wash the dishes and nothing else. I was bored, so I asked her to let me make the coffee. "Not yet," she said. "I want you to watch Sam first." Sam was the oldest waiter, and he helped me learn everything: how to use the coffee machine, how to carry three plates at once, how to talk to difficult customers.
By the end of the summer I could run the café by myself on quiet afternoons. Once I burnt myself on the coffee machine, but I didn't tell anyone — I just held my hand under cold water and carried on.
On my last day Mrs Price made me a cake herself. "You've taught yourself a lot," she said. "Would you like me to write you a reference?" I still have it.

Esempio
At my first job, my manager expected me to answer every email the same day. She made me write reports every Friday, but she let me work from home on Mondays. She didn't let us eat at our desks, and she made everyone switch off their phones in meetings. She wanted me to learn the new software quickly, so I taught myself in the evenings. A colleague offered to help, but I wanted to do it on my own. In the end I could do most things by myself.
