Gramatika

He said, "I'll help you" → He offered to help me.

Veiksmažodis + žmogus + to + veiksmažodis. Kalbėtojas nori, kad veiktų kitas žmogus, todėl tą žmogų reikia įvardyti. Neiginys — not to.

advise — patarti The doctor advised me to rest.
warn — perspėti She warned us not to swim there.
remind — priminti He reminded me to lock the door.
invite — kviesti They invited us to stay for dinner.

Čia pat ir ask bei tell iš B1 #15: asked me to wait, told us not to be late.

Veiksmažodis + to + veiksmažodis, be adresato. Kalbėtojas pats imasi darbo arba pats atsisako, todėl kito žmogaus įvardyti nereikia.

offer — siūlyti (savo pagalbą) He offered to carry my bag.
promise — pažadėti She promised to call. / She promised not to tell anyone.
refuse — atsisakyti He refused to answer.
agree — sutikti They agreed to change the date.

Po prielinksnio (for, on) veiksmažodis visada eina forma su -ing.

suggest — siūlyti (idėją) She suggested going by train.
apologise for — atsiprašyti už He apologised for being late.
thank ką for — dėkoti už She thanked me for helping.
insist on — primygtinai reikalauti He insisted on paying.

suggest turi ir antrą variantą — su visu sakiniu: She suggested that we should go by train. Taip patogu, kai reikia pasakyti, kam siūloma.

Kas tampa paprasčiau. Po ketinimo veiksmažodžių nereikia laikų poslinkio iš B1 #15. Forma to + veiksmažodis ir forma su -ing neturi savo laiko: laiką laiko pats ketinimo veiksmažodis. Palyginkite: He said he would call me — žodžių perpasakojimas, su would; He promised to call me — ketinimo perpasakojimas, ir would jau nereikia.

Kai kurie iš šių veiksmažodžių prisijungia ir visą sakinį su that: She promised that she would call, He agreed that the plan was good.

"You should see a doctor." / "If I were you, I'd…" advise
"I'll help you." / "Shall I carry it?" offer
"I'll do it, I promise." promise
"No, I won't." refuse
"OK, fine." agree
"Let's…" / "Why don't we…?" suggest
"Sorry I'm late." apologise for
"Don't forget to…" remind
"Be careful — don't…" warn
"You'd better…" advise
"You'd better not…" warn

Tiesioginis patarimas: You'd better… Prieš perpasakojant patarimą, jį reikia išgirsti ir mokėti duoti patiems. Be should (A2 #11) ir If I were you (B1 #8), anglų kalba turi patarimą su perspėjimu: had better + veiksmažodis be to. Kalboje ji beveik visada trumpinama: 'd better.

You'd better see a doctor. Verčiau nueik pas gydytoją (kitaip bus blogiau).
You'd better not be late again. Tik daugiau nevėluok.
I'd better go — it's nearly midnight. Aš jau eisiu, jau beveik vidurnaktis.
We'd better take an umbrella. Pasiimkime skėtį (kitaip sušlapsime).

Neiginys — not po better: You'd better not. 'd čia — tai had, o ne would, nors rašoma vienodai.

should ar had better? You should see a doctor — ramus patarimas, „vertėtų“. You'd better see a doctor — primygtiniau ir apie konkretų atvejį: jei nepadarysi, bus pasekmių. Todėl apie bendras tiesas had better nesakoma: People should sleep eight hours, o ne had better. Viršininkui ar nepažįstamam žmogui You'd better… gali nuskambėti kaip grasinimas; apie save — I'd better go — taip sakoma visada ir su visais.

Perpasakojimas. Tiesioginis patarimas perteikiamas ketinimo veiksmažodžiu: "You'd better see a doctor" → She advised me to see a doctor; "You'd better not swim here" → He warned us not to swim there. had better perpasakojime nepasislenka, ir variantas su said taip pat galimas: She said I'd better see a doctor.

Palyginkite offer ir suggest — lietuviškai abu „pasiūlyti“:

He offered to drive us. Pasiūlė mus nuvežti — pats sės prie vairo.
He suggested taking a taxi. Pasiūlė važiuoti taksi — tai idėja visiems.

offer — pasiūlyti save, savo pagalbą ar daiktą; suggest — pasiūlyti idėją.

Daugiau pavyzdžių:

My friend advised me not to buy the car. Draugas patarė man nepirkti automobilio.
They refused to give us our money back. Jie atsisakė grąžinti mums pinigus.
I apologised for forgetting her birthday. Atsiprašiau, kad pamiršau jos gimtadienį.

Taip nesakoma. ✗ He insisted to pay → ✓ He insisted on paying. ✗ You'd better to go → ✓ You'd better go.

Pasitikrinkite. Kokiu veiksmažodžiu perteikti "Let's take a taxi"? Kas negerai sakinyje He advised to rest?

rodyti atsakymus
suggest — She suggested taking a taxi; neįvardytas žmogus, kuriam patariama: He advised me to rest; You'd better not be late — She warned me not to be late.

Lietuvių kalbos gimtakalbių klaidos

parašyta jūsų kalbai
1

suggest su to ir su adresatu

✗ He suggested to go by train

✗ She suggested me to wait

✓ He suggested going by train

She suggested that I should wait. Lietuviškai „pasiūlė važiuoti“, „pasiūlė man palaukti“ — po „pasiūlyti“ eina ir naudininkas, ir bendratis. suggest neprisijungia nei vieno, nei kito: po jo eina -ing arba visas sakinys su that.

2

offer vietoj suggest

He offered to go to the cinema reiškia, kad jis pats pasisiūlė nueiti į kiną — pavyzdžiui, vietoj jūsų. Jei jis pasiūlė visiems eiti, reikia He suggested going to the cinema. Lietuviškas „pasiūlyti“ apima abi reikšmes, todėl pasirinkimas atrodo atsitiktinis.

3

advise be žmogaus

✗ He advised to see a doctor

✓ He advised me to see a doctor

Lietuviškai „patarė nueiti pas gydytoją“ skamba išbaigtai: kam — aišku iš pokalbio. Angliškai vieta žmogui po advise privaloma.

4

Bendratis po prielinksnio ir po insist

✗ He apologised for be late

✗ She thanked me for help her

✗ He insisted to pay

✓ He apologised for being late

She thanked me for helping her, He insisted on paying.

5

advice kaip skaičiuojamas daiktavardis

✗ He gave me a good advise

✗ an advice

✗ advices

✓ He gave me some good advice

arba a good piece of advice. Lietuviškas „patarimas“ skaičiuojamas („vienas patarimas“, „keli patarimai“), todėl ranka rašo an advice. Angliškai advice — neskaičiuojamas daiktavardis: be a ir be daugiskaitos. Be to, advise — veiksmažodis, advice — daiktavardis, ir juos skiria viena raidė.

Tarimas

4 min

Ketinimo veiksmažodis kirčiuotas — būtent jis neša prasmę:

He offered to help. She refused to answer. They agreed to wait.

Kirtis — ant better ir ant pagrindinio veiksmažodžio: You'd BETter GO.

Kirčiai, kuriuos verta įsiminti: promise /ˈprɒmɪs/ — pirmajame skiemenyje; suggest /səˈdʒest/ — antrajame, pirmasis skiemuo trumpas ir nekirčiuotas; apologise /əˈpɒlədʒaɪz/ — keturi skiemenys, kirtis antrajame; refuse /rɪˈfjuːz/ — antrajame, gale /z/.

On Monday our team had a difficult meeting. We were supposed to finish a big presentation for a client by Friday, but half of it wasn't ready.

Tom arrived ten minutes late and apologised for keeping everyone waiting. He promised to send us his part that evening. Lucy offered to help him with the charts, but he refused — he said he had almost finished.

Then our manager, Helen, looked at the plan and suggested working in pairs. She advised us to start with the hardest slides and warned us not to change the design at the last minute. I reminded her that two people were on holiday that week. She thought for a moment and agreed to move the deadline to the following Wednesday. "But you'd better not ask for more time again," she added with a smile.

After the meeting Tom thanked Lucy for offering to help and invited us all to lunch. He insisted on paying for everyone. I think he simply felt guilty about being late.
