He said, "I'll help you" → He offered to help me. L'estil indirecte es fa més curt, i de seguida es veu per què ho va dir.

La forma: tres models. Els verbs es divideixen en tres grups segons el que va darrere. El grup s'ha d'aprendre juntament amb el verb.

Verb + persona + to + verb. Qui parla vol que actuï una altra persona, i per això cal dir qui és. La negació és not to.

advise — aconsellar The doctor advised me to rest.
warn — advertir, avisar She warned us not to swim there.
remind — recordar (a algú) He reminded me to lock the door.
invite — convidar They invited us to stay for dinner.

Aquí també hi van ask i tell de la B1 #15: asked me to wait, told us not to be late.

Verb + to + verb, sense persona. Qui parla es compromet a fer alguna cosa o s'hi nega ell mateix, i per això no cal anomenar ningú més.

offer — oferir-se a (ajudar) He offered to carry my bag.
promise — prometre She promised to call. / She promised not to tell anyone.
refuse — negar-se a He refused to answer.
agree — acceptar, posar-se d'acord They agreed to change the date.

Verb + -ing, o preposició + -ing. suggest proposa una idea per a tothom alhora, i no diu qui l'ha de fer: d'aquí ve la -ing. Darrere d'una preposició (for, on) el verb sempre va en la forma en -ing.

suggest — proposar (una idea) She suggested going by train.
apologise for — disculpar-se per He apologised for being late.
thank algú for — donar les gràcies per She thanked me for helping.
insist on — insistir a, insistir en He insisted on paying.

suggest té una segona opció, amb una frase sencera: She suggested that we should go by train. Va bé quan cal dir a qui es proposa.

Què es fa més senzill. Darrere dels verbs d'intenció no cal el canvi de temps de la B1 #15. La forma to + verb i la forma en -ing no tenen temps propi: el temps el porta el mateix verb d'intenció. Compara: He said he would call me — es transmeten les paraules, amb would; He promised to call me — es transmet la intenció, i would ja no cal. L'estil indirecte es fa no només més curt, sinó també més senzill.

Alguns d'aquests verbs també admeten una frase sencera amb that: She promised that she would call, He agreed that the plan was good. Però per a la intenció la forma curta sona més natural. Quan s'explica una conversa, els verbs d'intenció normalment s'alternen amb said i told. Si totes les rèpliques passen per said, el relat sona monòton, i si totes passen per verbs d'intenció, sembla l'acta d'una reunió.

Quin verb, i quan. La pista és a les mateixes paraules de qui parla:

"You should see a doctor." / "If I were you, I'd…" advise
"I'll help you." / "Shall I carry it?" offer
"I'll do it, I promise." promise
"No, I won't." refuse
"OK, fine." agree
"Let's…" / "Why don't we…?" suggest
"Sorry I'm late." apologise for
"Don't forget to…" remind
"Be careful — don't…" warn
"You'd better…" advise
"You'd better not…" warn

El consell directe: You'd better… Abans de transmetre un consell, cal sentir-lo i saber-lo donar tu mateix. A més de should (A2 #11) i If I were you (B1 #8), l'anglès té un consell amb advertència: had better + verb sense to. Vol dir «més val que ho facis, perquè si no, anirà malament», i s'acosta molt al català «més val que…». Aquí had no és passat: és una forma fixa i parla del present o del futur proper. En la llengua parlada gairebé sempre s'escurça: 'd better.

You'd better see a doctor. Més val que vagis al metge (si no, aniràs a pitjor).
You'd better not be late again. Més val que no tornis a arribar tard.
I'd better go — it's nearly midnight. Més val que me'n vagi, que ja és gairebé mitjanit.
We'd better take an umbrella. Millor que agafem el paraigua (si no, ens mullarem).

La negació és not darrere de better: You'd better not. Aquí 'd és had, no would, encara que s'escriu igual.

should o had better? You should see a doctor és un consell tranquil: «hauries d'anar-hi». You'd better see a doctor és més insistent i parla d'un cas concret: si no ho fas, hi haurà conseqüències. Per això amb les veritats generals no es fa servir had better: People should sleep eight hours, i no had better. Dit al cap o a un desconegut, You'd better… pot sonar com una amenaça; dit d'un mateix —I'd better go— es fa servir sempre i amb tothom.

L'estil indirecte. El consell directe es transmet amb un verb d'intenció: "You'd better see a doctor" → She advised me to see a doctor; "You'd better not swim here" → He warned us not to swim there. had better no canvia en estil indirecte, i també és possible l'opció amb said: She said I'd better see a doctor.

Compara offer i suggest: en català, «oferir-se a» i «proposar»:

He offered to drive us. Es va oferir a portar-nos amb cotxe: conduirà ell.
He suggested taking a taxi. Va proposar agafar un taxi: és una idea per a tothom.

offer és oferir-se un mateix, la seva ajuda o una cosa; suggest és proposar una idea.

Més exemples:

My friend advised me not to buy the car. Un amic em va aconsellar que no comprés el cotxe.
They refused to give us our money back. Es van negar a tornar-nos els diners.
I apologised for forgetting her birthday. Em vaig disculpar per haver oblidat el seu aniversari.

Així no es diu. ✗ He insisted to pay → ✓ He insisted on paying. Darrere de insist sempre va on i la forma en -ing, encara que en català es digui «va insistir a pagar». ✗ You'd better to go → ✓ You'd better go. Darrere de had better, com darrere d'un verb modal, no es posa to.

Posa't a prova. Amb quin verb es transmet "Let's take a taxi"? Què falla a He advised to rest? Com es diu «més val que no arribis tard», i com es transmet?

mostra les respostes
suggest — She suggested taking a taxi; no s'hi diu a qui s'aconsella: He advised me to rest; You'd better not be late — She warned me not to be late.

Errors dels parlants de català

1

suggest com «proposar» o «suggerir»

✗ He suggested to go by train

✗ She suggested me to wait

✓ He suggested going by train

She suggested that I should wait. «Va proposar anar en tren», «em va suggerir d'esperar»: en català darrere d'aquests verbs hi poden anar la persona i l'infinitiu. suggest no admet ni l'una cosa ni l'altra: darrere hi va -ing o una frase sencera amb that.

2

remember en lloc de remind

✗ Remember me to buy some bread

✗ He remembered me to lock the door

✓ Remind me to buy some bread

He reminded me to lock the door. En català «recordar» serveix per a totes dues coses: «recordo el seu nom» i «recorda'm que compri pa». En anglès remember és recordar-se'n un mateix; remind, fer que un altre se'n recordi.

3

L'infinitiu darrere de la preposició

✗ Thank you for help me

✗ He apologised for be late

✓ Thank you for helping me

He apologised for being late. «Gràcies per ajudar-me», «es va disculpar per arribar tard»: en català darrere de la preposició va l'infinitiu. En anglès el verb que va darrere d'una preposició porta -ing.

4

an advice

✗ He gave me an advice

✗ some good advices

✓ He gave me some good advice

a good piece of advice. «Un consell», «uns consells» es compten; advice és incomptable: sense a i sense plural. El verb és advise, «aconsellar», amb una lletra de diferència, i no vol dir «avisar» d'un perill: això és warn.

5

I'm agree

✗ I'm agree

✗ They were agree to change the date

✓ I agree

They agreed to change the date. «Estic d'acord» porta «estar», però agree ja és un verb complet: no porta be.

Pronunciació

4 min

El verb d'intenció porta l'accent, perquè és el que du el sentit:

He offered to help. She refused to answer. They agreed to wait.

L'accent va a better i al verb principal: You'd BETter GO.

Accents que cal vigilar: promise /ˈprɒmɪs/ — a la primera síl·laba, no a la segona com a «prometre»; suggest /səˈdʒest/ — a la segona, amb la primera síl·laba curta i àtona; apologise /əˈpɒlədʒaɪz/ — quatre síl·labes, accent a la segona; refuse /rɪˈfjuːz/ — a la segona, amb /z/ al final.

Text

5 min

On Monday our team had a difficult meeting. We were supposed to finish a big presentation for a client by Friday, but half of it wasn't ready.

Tom arrived ten minutes late and apologised for keeping everyone waiting. He promised to send us his part that evening. Lucy offered to help him with the charts, but he refused — he said he had almost finished.

Then our manager, Helen, looked at the plan and suggested working in pairs. She advised us to start with the hardest slides and warned us not to change the design at the last minute. I reminded her that two people were on holiday that week. She thought for a moment and agreed to move the deadline to the following Wednesday. "But you'd better not ask for more time again," she added with a smile.

After the meeting Tom thanked Lucy for offering to help and invited us all to lunch. He insisted on paying for everyone. I think he simply felt guilty about being late.
