Oppitunnin B1 #15 jälkeen osaat referoida mitä tahansa sanoja verbeillä said, told ja asked. Elävässä referoinnissa sanoja tärkeämpää on kuitenkin aikomus: ihminen neuvoi, kieltäytyi, lupasi, ehdotti. Englanti välittää aikomuksen yhdellä verbillä. He said, "I'll help you" → He offered to help me.

Verbi + kuka + to + verbi. Kielto on not to.

advise — neuvoa The doctor advised me to rest.
warn — varoittaa She warned us not to swim there.
remind — muistuttaa He reminded me to lock the door.
invite — kutsua They invited us to stay for dinner.

Samaan ryhmään kuuluvat ask ja tell oppitunnilta B1 #15: asked me to wait, told us not to be late.

Verbi + to + verbi, ilman kenelle-sanaa.

offer — tarjoutua (auttamaan) He offered to carry my bag.
promise — luvata She promised to call. / She promised not to tell anyone.
refuse — kieltäytyä He refused to answer.
agree — suostua They agreed to change the date.

Verbi + -ing, tai prepositio + -ing. suggest ehdottaa ideaa kaikille kerralla, eikä tekijää nimetä — siksi -ing. Preposition (for, on) jälkeen verbi on aina -ing-muodossa.

suggest — ehdottaa (ideaa) She suggested going by train.
apologise for — pyytää anteeksi jotakin He apologised for being late.
thank jotakuta for — kiittää jostakin She thanked me for helping.
insist on — vaatia, pitää kiinni jostakin He insisted on paying.

suggest-verbillä on toinenkin vaihtoehto — kokonainen lause: She suggested that we should go by train.

Vertaa: He said he would call me — sanojen referointi, would-sanalla; He promised to call me — aikomuksen referointi, eikä would-sanaa enää tarvita. Referointi ei vain lyhene vaan myös helpottuu.

Osa näistä verbeistä käy myös kokonaisen that-lauseen kanssa: She promised that she would call, He agreed that the plan was good. Aikomuksesta lyhyt muoto kuulostaa kuitenkin luontevammalta.

Vihje on puhujan omissa sanoissa:

"You should see a doctor." / "If I were you, I'd…" advise
"I'll help you." / "Shall I carry it?" offer
"I'll do it, I promise." promise
"No, I won't." refuse
"OK, fine." agree
"Let's…" / "Why don't we…?" suggest
"Sorry I'm late." apologise for
"Don't forget to…" remind
"Be careful — don't…" warn
"You'd better…" advise
"You'd better not…" warn

Suora neuvo: You'd better… Sanojen should (A2 #11) ja If I were you (B1 #8) lisäksi englannissa on varoittava neuvo: had better + verbi ilman to-sanaa.

You'd better see a doctor. Sinun on parasta mennä lääkäriin (muuten olo pahenee).
You'd better not be late again. Älä vain enää myöhästy.
I'd better go — it's nearly midnight. Minun on parasta lähteä, on jo melkein keskiyö.
We'd better take an umbrella. Otetaanpa sateenvarjo (muuten kastutaan).

Kielto on not sanan better jälkeen: You'd better not. 'd on tässä had eikä would, vaikka se kirjoitetaan samoin.

should vai had better? You should see a doctor — rauhallinen neuvo, ”kannattaisi”. You'd better see a doctor — painokkaampi ja koskee tiettyä tilannetta: jos et tee niin, seuraa jotakin. Siksi yleisistä totuuksista ei sanota had better: People should sleep eight hours, ei had better. Esimiehelle tai tuntemattomalle You'd better… voi kuulostaa uhkaukselta; itsestä — I'd better go — näin sanotaan aina ja kaikille.

Referointi. Suora neuvo välitetään aikomusverbillä: "You'd better see a doctor" → She advised me to see a doctor; "You'd better not swim here" → He warned us not to swim there. had better ei referoinnissa siirry, ja myös said-verbillä voi sanoa: She said I'd better see a doctor.

He offered to drive us. Tarjoutui viemään meidät autolla — ajaa itse.
He suggested taking a taxi. Ehdotti taksia — idea on kaikille.

offer — tarjota itseään, apuaan tai jotakin tavaraa; suggest — ehdottaa ideaa.

Lisää esimerkkejä:

My friend advised me not to buy the car. Ystäväni neuvoi minua olemaan ostamatta autoa.
They refused to give us our money back. He kieltäytyivät palauttamasta rahojamme.
I apologised for forgetting her birthday. Pyysin anteeksi, että olin unohtanut hänen syntymäpäivänsä.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ He insisted to pay → ✓ He insisted on paying. insist-verbin jälkeen tulee aina on ja -ing-muoto. ✗ You'd better to go → ✓ You'd better go. had better -rakenteen jälkeen, kuten modaaliverbin jälkeen, ei tule to-sanaa.

Testaa itsesi. Millä verbillä välität lauseen "Let's take a taxi"? Mikä on vialla lauseessa He advised to rest?

suggest — She suggested taking a taxi; ihmistä, jolle neuvo annetaan, ei ole nimetty: He advised me to rest; You'd better not be late — She warned me not to be late.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

suggest kuin ”ehdottaa, että”

✗ He suggested that we would go by train

✗ She suggested me to wait

✓ He suggested going by train / He suggested that we should go by train

She suggested that I should wait. Suomessa ehdotus on yleensä että-lause konditionaalissa (”ehdotti, että menisimme”), ja konditionaalista tulee would; ”ehdotti minulle” tuo verbin perään ihmisen. suggest-verbin jälkeen tulee -ing-muoto tai that + should.

2

advise ilman ihmistä

✗ He advised to see a doctor

✓ He advised me to see a doctor

”Lääkäri neuvoi lepäämään” on suomeksi täydellinen lause: kenelle neuvo annettiin, selviää tilanteesta. Englannissa ihminen on advise-verbin jälkeen pakollinen.

3

advice laskettavana

✗ He gave me a good advice

✗ advices

✓ He gave me some good advice

tai a good piece of advice. Suomen ”neuvo” on laskettava: ”hyvä neuvo”, ”monta neuvoa”. Englannin advice on laskematon: ei a-sanaa eikä monikkoa. Verbi kirjoitetaan s:llä: advise.

4

offer kuin ”tarjota”

✗ Don't worry, I offer.

✓ Don't worry, I'll pay.

Kun joku maksaa kaikkien puolesta: He insisted on paying for everyone.

Ääntäminen

4 min

Aikomusverbi on painollinen — juuri se kantaa merkityksen:

He offered to help. She refused to answer. They agreed to wait.

You'd better — /jʊd ˈbetə/: /d/ ennen /b/:tä kuuluu tuskin lainkaan, ja korvaan fraasi kuulostaa lähes muodolta /jʊ ˈbetə/. Kirjoituksessa 'd tarvitaan kuitenkin aina. Paino on sanalla better ja pääverbillä: You'd BETter GO.

Paino, jonka suomenkieliset siirtävät helposti alkuun: suomessa paino on aina sanan ensimmäisellä tavulla, ja tottumus siirtyy englantiin. promise /ˈprɒmɪs/ — ensimmäisellä tavulla, kuten suomessa; suggest /səˈdʒest/ — toisella, ensimmäinen tavu on lyhyt ja painoton; apologise /əˈpɒlədʒaɪz/ — neljä tavua, paino toisella; refuse /rɪˈfjuːz/ — toisella, lopussa /z/.

Teksti

On Monday our team had a difficult meeting. We were supposed to finish a big presentation for a client by Friday, but half of it wasn't ready.

Tom arrived ten minutes late and apologised for keeping everyone waiting. He promised to send us his part that evening. Lucy offered to help him with the charts, but he refused — he said he had almost finished.

Then our manager, Helen, looked at the plan and suggested working in pairs. She advised us to start with the hardest slides and warned us not to change the design at the last minute. I reminded her that two people were on holiday that week. She thought for a moment and agreed to move the deadline to the following Wednesday. "But you'd better not ask for more time again," she added with a smile.

After the meeting Tom thanked Lucy for offering to help and invited us all to lunch. He insisted on paying for everyone. I think he simply felt guilty about being late.
