He said, "I'll help you" → He offered to help me.

Verb + cine + to + verb. Negația — not to.

advise — a sfătui The doctor advised me to rest.
warn — a avertiza She warned us not to swim there.
remind — a aminti (cuiva) He reminded me to lock the door.
invite — a invita They invited us to stay for dinner.

Tot aici intră ask și tell din B1 #15: asked me to wait, told us not to be late.

Verb + to + verb, fără destinatar.

offer — a se oferi (să ajute) He offered to carry my bag.
promise — a promite She promised to call. / She promised not to tell anyone.
refuse — a refuza He refused to answer.
agree — a fi de acord, a accepta They agreed to change the date.

suggest — a propune (o idee) She suggested going by train.
apologise for — a-și cere scuze pentru He apologised for being late.
thank cuiva for — a mulțumi pentru She thanked me for helping.
insist on — a insista să, a insista asupra He insisted on paying.

suggest are și o a doua variantă — cu o propoziție întreagă: She suggested that we should go by train.

Compară: He said he would call me — redarea cuvintelor, cu would; He promised to call me — redarea intenției, și would nu mai trebuie.

Unele dintre aceste verbe primesc și o propoziție întreagă cu that: She promised that she would call, He agreed that the plan was good.

"You should see a doctor." / "If I were you, I'd…" advise
"I'll help you." / "Shall I carry it?" offer
"I'll do it, I promise." promise
"No, I won't." refuse
"OK, fine." agree
"Let's…" / "Why don't we…?" suggest
"Sorry I'm late." apologise for
"Don't forget to…" remind
"Be careful — don't…" warn
"You'd better…" advise
"You'd better not…" warn

Sfatul direct: You'd better… Pe lângă should (A2 #11) și If I were you (B1 #8), engleza are un sfat cu avertisment: had better + verb fără to.

You'd better see a doctor.
You'd better not be late again. Doar să nu mai întârzii.
I'd better go — it's nearly midnight. Mai bine plec — e aproape miezul nopții.
We'd better take an umbrella.

Negația — not după better: You'd better not. 'd e aici had, nu would, deși se scrie la fel.

should sau had better? You should see a doctor — un sfat calm, „ar trebui”. You'd better see a doctor — mai insistent și despre un caz concret: dacă nu faci asta, vor fi urmări. De aceea despre adevăruri generale nu se spune had better: People should sleep eight hours, nu had better. Spus unui șef sau unui necunoscut, You'd better… poate suna a amenințare; despre tine însuți — I'd better go — așa se spune mereu și cu oricine.

Repovestirea. Sfatul direct se redă printr-un verb de intenție: "You'd better see a doctor" → She advised me to see a doctor; "You'd better not swim here" → He warned us not to swim there. had better în vorbirea indirectă nu se deplasează, și e posibilă și varianta cu said: She said I'd better see a doctor.

He offered to drive us.
He suggested taking a taxi.

My friend advised me not to buy the car.
They refused to give us our money back. Au refuzat să ne dea banii înapoi.
I apologised for forgetting her birthday. Mi-am cerut scuze că i-am uitat ziua de naștere.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ He insisted to pay → ✓ He insisted on paying. ✗ You'd better to go → ✓ You'd better go.

Verifică-te.

suggest — She suggested taking a taxi; nu e numit omul sfătuit: He advised me to rest; You'd better not be late — She warned me not to be late.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

„Mi-a propus să…” cuvânt cu cuvânt

„A propus să mergem cu trenul”, „mi-a propus să aștept” → ✗ He suggested to go by train, ✗ She suggested me to wait → ✓ He suggested going by train, She suggested that I should wait.

2

„Amintește-mi” cu remember

„Amintește-mi să cumpăr pâine” → ✗ Remember me to buy some bread → ✓ Remind me to buy some bread.

3

„A insistat să plătească.”

✗ He insisted to pay

✓ He insisted on paying

Dar insist cere on, iar după orice prepoziție verbul ia -ing: He apologised for being late, She thanked me for helping her.

4

I'm agree

„Sunt de acord”, „au fost de acord să mute data” → ✗ I'm agree, ✗ They were agree to change the date → ✓ I agree, They agreed to change the date. „De acord” cere în română verbul „a fi”, dar agree e un verb întreg și n-are nevoie de be.

5

an advice, advices

„Un sfat”, „niște sfaturi” → ✗ He gave me an advice, ✗ good advices → ✓ He gave me some good advice sau a good piece of advice.

He offered to help. She refused to answer. They agreed to wait.

Text

5 min

On Monday our team had a difficult meeting. We were supposed to finish a big presentation for a client by Friday, but half of it wasn't ready.

Tom arrived ten minutes late and apologised for keeping everyone waiting. He promised to send us his part that evening. Lucy offered to help him with the charts, but he refused — he said he had almost finished.

Then our manager, Helen, looked at the plan and suggested working in pairs. She advised us to start with the hardest slides and warned us not to change the design at the last minute. I reminded her that two people were on holiday that week. She thought for a moment and agreed to move the deadline to the following Wednesday. "But you'd better not ask for more time again," she added with a smile.

After the meeting Tom thanked Lucy for offering to help and invited us all to lunch. He insisted on paying for everyone. I think he simply felt guilty about being late.
