En B1 #8 el pasado detrás de if alejaba de la realidad: If I had more time…: no hay tiempo. I wish funciona igual.

La forma: I wish + sujeto + pasado.

I don't have a car. I wish I had a car.
I can't swim. I wish I could swim.
I have to work on Saturdays. I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays.
It's raining. I wish it wasn't raining.
I'm not very tall. I wish I were taller.

I wish I had a car: «qué pena que no tenga coche». I wish I didn't have to work: «qué pena tener que trabajar».

Si dominas If I had…, I wish I had… se construye exactamente igual; a menudo van juntas: I wish I had a car. If I had a car, I'd drive to work.

La habilidad se expresa con could: I wish I could drive. La obligación, con didn't have to, porque must no tiene forma de pasado (A2 #10).

If only: lo mismo, pero más fuerte, casi una exclamación: If only I had more time!: «¡Si al menos tuviera más tiempo!»

I wish + would: quiero que algo cambie. Así se habla del comportamiento ajeno que molesta y de lo que no depende de nosotros: I wish you would stop interrupting me.: «A ver si dejas de interrumpirme», con reproche. I wish it would stop raining.: «Ojalá dejara de llover». would mira hacia delante: la otra persona puede empezar a comportarse de otra manera. En lugar de ✗ I wish I would…, I wish I could… o I wish I had….

Compara:

I wish he didn't smoke. Qué pena que fume. — solo lamentas un hecho
I wish he would stop smoking.

I hope you get the job. I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. wish, para lo que no es: I wish I had a job. Hay también un tercer sentido: un deseo con sustantivo, sin pasado: I wish you luck, We wish you a happy New Year.

I wish I knew the answer. Ojalá supiera la respuesta.
I wish you were here. Ojalá estuvieras aquí.
I wish my neighbours would turn the music down.
If only I didn't live so far from work!

✗ I wish I didn't must work on Saturdays → ✓ I wish I didn't have to work on Saturdays. must no tiene forma de pasado, por eso detrás de wish hace falta have to.

Ponte a prueba. ¿Qué significa I wish I lived in the country: la persona vive en el campo o no?

no, vive en la ciudad: wish + pasado habla de lo que no es; I wish I spoke German (o I wish I could speak German); hope: puede pasar perfectamente: I hope it's sunny tomorrow.

Errores de los hispanohablantes

escrito para tu idioma
1

«Ojalá» tiene dos traducciones

«Ojalá no llueva el sábado» habla de algo posible: ✓ I hope it doesn't rain on Saturday, no ✗ I wish it doesn't rain on Saturday. «Ojalá tuviera más tiempo» habla de lo que no es: ✓ I wish I had more time, no ✗ I wish I have more time.

2

«Te deseo que…»

✗ I wish you get better soon

✓ I hope you get better soon

Para desearle a alguien algo posible, I hope…. Con un sustantivo, en cambio, wish sí va: I wish you luck.

3

«Saber» + infinitivo

✗ I wish I knew to drive

✓ I wish I could drive

También es correcto I wish I knew how to drive.

Pronunciación

4 min

I wish I had more time ↘↗

If only: el acento en only, /ɪf ˈəʊnli/. El primer sonido de only es el diptongo /əʊ/, como en go, no una «o» española.

I love my flat, but some days I wish I lived somewhere else. It's right in the centre of town, so everything is close. The problem is that it's tiny. I wish I had a proper kitchen — at the moment I cook on a small hob next to the sofa. And I wish the walls weren't so thin.

My neighbour upstairs is a nice young man, but he plays the drums. Every evening at ten, the concert starts. I wish he would practise in the afternoons instead. I've asked him twice, and he always says sorry, but nothing changes.

I also wish I could drive. If I had a car, I'd visit my parents more often. They live in a village in Yorkshire, and the trains there are slow and expensive. If only the buses were better!

Still, I'm not going to move. I like the cafés, the park and the noise of the street. I just hope my neighbour finds a new hobby soon. Maybe I'll buy him a guitar — a quiet one.
