The woman who lives next door is a nurse. —

My mother, who is seventy, still works. —

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.
My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor.

The film (that) we saw was boring — that ہٹایا جا سکتا ہے، اس کے بعد we ہے۔ اضافی جملے میں اسمِ موصول ہمیشہ رہتا ہے: The film, which we saw last week, was boring.

who لوگ the woman who called
which چیزیں اور جانور the car which I bought
that لوگ اور چیزیں، صرف پہچان کرانے والے جملے میں the book that you lent me
whose جس کا، جس کی، جن کے the man whose car was stolen
where جگہ the town where I grew up
when وقت the summer when we met

whose his، her، their، its کی جگہ لیتا ہے: I met a woman. Her son goes to my school. → I met a woman whose son goes to my school. whose کے فوراً بعد اسم آتا ہے، آرٹیکل کے بغیر۔ یہ چیزوں کے لیے بھی چلتا ہے: a house whose windows face the sea — اگرچہ زیادہ تر کہیں گے a house with windows facing the sea۔

the town where I live — where
the town (that) I visited

حرفِ جار آخر میں جاتا ہے۔ اردو میں “کے ساتھ” “جس” سے جڑا رہتا ہے اور جملے کے شروع میں آتا ہے: “وہ آدمی جس کے ساتھ میں کام کرتا ہوں”۔ انگریزی میں حرفِ جار اپنے فعل کے پاس، موصولہ جملے کے آخر میں رہتا ہے: the man (who) I work with، the flat (that) we live in، the people I spoke to۔ the man with whom I work والی صورت موجود ہے، مگر بہت رسمی لگتی ہے۔

I remember the day (when) we met.

Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland, has a famous festival.
The flat we live in is quite small.
Is that the café where you had breakfast?
July is the month when most people go on holiday.

یوں نہیں کہتے۔ ✗ The book which I bought it yesterday is good → ✓ The book which I bought yesterday is good۔ موصولہ جملے کا مفعول لفظ which پہلے ہی بتا چکا ہے، دوسرا it فالتو ہے۔

My father who is a doctor works in Leeds the town where I visited

My father, who is a doctor, works in Leeds; visit کا مفعول ہے، اس لیے that، which یا کچھ نہیں: the town (that) I visited; the people I work with / the people who I work with / the people that I work with۔

✗ The students who live in the city centre, they pay more، ✗ The film which we saw, it was boring → ✓ The students who live in the city centre pay more، The film which we saw was boring۔ اردو میں ایسا جملہ جوڑی سے بنتا ہے: “جو طلبہ شہر کے مرکز میں رہتے ہیں، وہ زیادہ پیسے دیتے ہیں” — کاما، پھر “وہ”۔ انگریزی میں نہ they چاہیے، نہ کاما: پہچان کرانے والا جملہ باقی جملے سے الگ نہیں کیا جاتا۔ اور اگر دونوں طرف کاما لگا دیں — The students, who live in the city centre, pay more — تو مطلب ہوگا کہ سارے طلبہ مرکز میں رہتے ہیں اور سارے زیادہ دیتے ہیں۔

2

✗ My brother, that lives in Italy, is a doctor

✓ My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor

3

which یا that کی جگہ where۔

✗ This is the town where I visited

✓ This is the town I visited

✗ The man which lives next door is a pilot

✓ The man who lives next door is a pilot

My brother ‖ who lives in Italy ‖ is a doctor.

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.

whose /huːz/ بالکل who's جیسا سنائی دیتا ہے۔ موصولہ جملے میں that بے زور ہے، /ðət/: the book that you lent me — /ðə ˈbʊk ðət juː ˈlent miː/۔

متن

The town where I grew up is on the north-east coast of England, about an hour from Newcastle. It's the kind of place that most people drive through without stopping.

My grandfather, who was born there in 1938, worked at the port all his life. The port, which was once the busiest on that part of the coast, closed in the eighties, and many families lost their main income.

We lived in a narrow house that looked straight out at the sea. The room I slept in was at the top, and on windy nights I could hear the waves. The house has been sold twice since then, and the people who live there now have painted it bright blue.

Last summer I went back for a weekend. In a café near the harbour I met an old man whose father had worked with my grandfather. He remembered the winter when the harbour froze — something my grandfather had told me about, but I had never quite believed. We talked for two hours, and before I left he showed me an old photo that he kept in his wallet: both our families on the beach, all smiling at the camera.
