A2 #26'da iki cümleyi who, which, that ile birleştiriyor, bir kişiyi ya da bir şeyi daha ayrıntılı anlatıyordunuz. O zaman bütün cümlecikler tek türdendi. Aslında iki tür vardır ve onları virgül ayırır.

Tanımlayan cümlecik — virgülsüz. “Hangisi?” sorusuna cevap verir ve şeyi ötekilerden ayırır. O olmadan kimden söz edildiği anlaşılmaz:

The woman who lives next door is a nurse. — Hangi kadın? Yan evde oturan.

My mother, who is seventy, still works.

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.
My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor.

who ve which yerine that olur olmaz

The film (that) we saw was boring — that atılabilir, ardından we geliyor. Ek bilgi veren cümlecikte ilgi zamiri her zaman kalır: The film, which we saw last week, was boring. Ek bilgi veren cümlecikler daha çok yazıda görülür; konuşmada onların yerine çoğu zaman iki ayrı cümle kurulur.

Bütün ilgi kelimeleri:

ne için örnek
who insanlar the woman who called
which eşyalar ve hayvanlar the car which I bought
that insanlar ve eşyalar, yalnızca tanımlayanda the book that you lent me
whose kimin, sahiplik (“arabası çalınan”) the man whose car was stolen
where yer the town where I grew up
when zaman the summer when we met

whose, his, her, their, its'in yerini alır: I met a woman. Her son goes to my school. → I met a woman whose son goes to my school. Eşyalar için de kullanılır: a house whose windows face the sea — ama daha çok a house with windows facing the sea denir.

where mı, which mı? where “orada, içinde” anlamını taşır ve bütün bir yerin yerini alır. Cümlecikteki fiilin kendi nesnesi varsa — neyi ziyaret etti, neyi gördü —, which ya da that gerekir:

the town where I live nerede yaşıyorum? — where
the town (that) I visited neyi ziyaret ettim? — that ya da hiçbir şey

Edat sona gider. İngilizcede edat kendi fiilinin yanında, cümleciğin sonunda kalır ve atılmaz: the man (who) I work with, the flat (that) we live in, the people I spoke to. the man with whom I work seçeneği de vardır, ama çok resmî duyulur.

when zaman kelimelerinden sonra çoğu zaman atılır: I remember the day (when) we met.

Başka örnekler:

Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland, has a famous festival. Edinburgh (ek bilgi: şehir bir tane).
The flat we live in is quite small. Oturduğumuz daire oldukça küçük.
Is that the café where you had breakfast? Kahvaltı yaptığın kafe şu mu?
July is the month when most people go on holiday. Temmuz, çoğu insanın tatile gittiği aydır.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ The book which I bought it yesterday is good → ✓ The book which I bought yesterday is good. Cümleciğin nesnesi which ile zaten söylenmiştir, ikinci bir it fazladır.

Kendinizi sınayın. My father who is a doctor works in Leeds cümlesinde virgül gerekir mi? Neden the town where I visited denmez? “Birlikte çalıştığım insanlar” whom olmadan nasıl söylenir?

cevapları göster
gerekir — baba bir tane, cümlecik yalnızca bilgi ekliyor: My father, who is a doctor, works in Leeds; visit'in nesnesi var, bu yüzden that, which ya da hiçbir şey gerekir: the town (that) I visited; the people I work with / the people who I work with / the people that I work with.

Türkçe konuşanların hataları

diliniz için yazıldı
1

The students, who live in the city centre, pay more — öğrencilerin hepsi merkezde oturuyor ve hepsi daha çok ödüyor. “Merkezde oturan öğrenciler” demek istiyorsanız virgül konmaz: The students who live in the city centre pay more. Tersi de sık görülür: ✗ My mother who is seventy still works → ✓ My mother, who is seventy, still works.

2

Düşen edat

✗ the flat we live

✗ the people I spoke

✓ the flat we live in

the people I spoke to. “Oturduğumuz daire”, “konuştuğum insanlar” — Türkçede edat sıfat fiilin içinde kaybolur. İngilizcede edat fiiline bağlıdır ve cümleciğin sonunda durur.

3

which ya da that yerine where

✗ This is the town where I visited

✓ This is the town I visited

Türkçede “yaşadığım şehir” ve “ziyaret ettiğim şehir” aynı biçimde kurulur, bu yüzden “şehir” kelimesi her seferinde where'i çağırır. Ama where zaten “orada” anlamını taşır; fiilin bir nesneye ihtiyacı varsa (visit — neyi?), where onu vermez.

4

whose yerine who + her

✗ I met a woman who her son goes to my school

✓ I met a woman whose son goes to my school

“Oğlu okuluma giden kadın” — Türkçede sahipliği isimdeki ek gösterir, ve bu ek kolayca her son olur. İngilizcede who ile her'in işini tek bir kelime görür: whose.

Telaffuz

3 dk

Ek bilgi veren cümleciğin virgülleri duyulur — bunlar duraklardır:

My brother ‖ who lives in Italy ‖ is a doctor.

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.

whose /huːz/, who's ile aynı söylenir. that cümlecikte vurgusuzdur, /ðət/: the book that you lent me — /ðə ˈbʊk ðət juː ˈlent miː/.

Metin

The town where I grew up is on the north-east coast of England, about an hour from Newcastle. It's the kind of place that most people drive through without stopping.

My grandfather, who was born there in 1938, worked at the port all his life. The port, which was once the busiest on that part of the coast, closed in the eighties, and many families lost their main income.

We lived in a narrow house that looked straight out at the sea. The room I slept in was at the top, and on windy nights I could hear the waves. The house has been sold twice since then, and the people who live there now have painted it bright blue.

Last summer I went back for a weekend. In a café near the harbour I met an old man whose father had worked with my grandfather. He remembered the winter when the harbour froze — something my grandfather had told me about, but I had never quite believed. We talked for two hours, and before I left he showed me an old photo that he kept in his wallet: both our families on the beach, all smiling at the camera.
