The woman who lives next door is a nurse.
My mother, who is seventy, still works.
| My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor. |
| My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor. |
Prin ce se mai deosebesc:
| determinativă | explicativă | |
|---|---|---|
The film (that) we saw was boring — that se poate scoate, după el stă we. În explicativă cuvântul relativ rămâne mereu: The film, which we saw last week, was boring.
Toate cuvintele relative:
| despre ce | exemplu | |
|---|---|---|
| who | oameni | the woman who called |
| which | lucruri și animale | the car which I bought |
| that | oameni și lucruri, doar în determinativă | the book that you lent me |
| whose | al cărui, a cărei | the man whose car was stolen |
| where | loc | the town where I grew up |
| when | timp | the summer when we met |
whose înlocuiește his, her, their, its: I met a woman. Her son goes to my school. → I met a woman whose son goes to my school. După whose urmează direct substantivul, fără articol. Merge și pentru lucruri: a house whose windows face the sea — deși mai des se spune a house with windows facing the sea.
where sau which. where înseamnă „unde”, „în care” și înlocuiește un loc întreg. Dacă verbul din relativă are propriul obiect — a vizitat ce, a văzut ce —, trebuie which sau that:
| the town where I live | locuiesc unde? — where |
| the town (that) I visited | am vizitat ce? — that sau nimic |
În engleză ea rămâne lângă verbul ei, la sfârșitul relativei: the man (who) I work with, the flat (that) we live in, the people I spoke to. Varianta the man with whom I work există, dar sună foarte oficial.
when după cuvintele de timp se omite des: I remember the day (when) we met.
Încă exemple:
| Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland, has a famous festival. | Edinburgh (explicativă: orașul e unul singur). |
| The flat we live in is quite small. | Apartamentul în care locuim e mic. |
| Is that the café where you had breakfast? | E cafeneaua unde ai luat micul dejun? |
| July is the month when most people go on holiday. | Iulie e luna în care… |
Așa nu se spune. ✗ The book which I bought it yesterday is good → ✓ The book which I bought yesterday is good. Obiectul relativei e deja numit prin which, al doilea it e în plus.
Verifică-te. Trebuie virgule în My father who is a doctor works in Leeds?

The man which lives next door, ✗ the people with which I work → ✓ The man who lives next door, the people I work with.
Pronumele repetat
„Cartea pe care am cumpărat-o ieri” → ✗ The book which I bought it yesterday → ✓ The book which I bought yesterday. În română „pe care” cere și „-o”; în engleză which ține deja locul lui it.
„Care … ei” în loc de whose
În vorbire se aude „o femeie care fiul ei merge la școala mea” în loc de „al cărei fiu” → ✗ I met a woman who her son goes to my school → ✓ I met a woman whose son goes to my school. whose e un cuvânt obișnuit al conversației și înlocuiește deodată who și her.
what din „ce”
„Filmul ce l-am văzut” → ✗ The film what we saw was boring → ✓ The film that we saw was boring sau The film we saw was boring. Dar what înseamnă „ceea ce” și înlocuiește singur lucrul: I don't know what he wants. După un substantiv nu se pune.
Pronunție
3 minVirgulele relativei explicative se aud — sunt pauze:
My brother ‖ who lives in Italy ‖ is a doctor.
My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.
whose /huːz/ sună la fel ca who's. that în relativă e neaccentuat, /ðət/: the book that you lent me — /ðə ˈbʊk ðət juː ˈlent miː/.
Text
5 minThe town where I grew up is on the north-east coast of England, about an hour from Newcastle. It's the kind of place that most people drive through without stopping.
My grandfather, who was born there in 1938, worked at the port all his life. The port, which was once the busiest on that part of the coast, closed in the eighties, and many families lost their main income.
We lived in a narrow house that looked straight out at the sea. The room I slept in was at the top, and on windy nights I could hear the waves. The house has been sold twice since then, and the people who live there now have painted it bright blue.
Last summer I went back for a weekend. In a café near the harbour I met an old man whose father had worked with my grandfather. He remembered the winter when the harbour froze — something my grandfather had told me about, but I had never quite believed. We talked for two hours, and before I left he showed me an old photo that he kept in his wallet: both our families on the beach, all smiling at the camera.

Model
The village my grandparents lived in is in the hills. My grandmother, who was a teacher, knew every family there. She worked at the village school for thirty years. Her neighbour, whose garden was full of roses, always gave us apples. The house was sold after she died. I still have her letters.
