Grammatik

The woman who lives next door is a nurse. — Vilken kvinna?

My mother, who is seventy, still works.

Samma ord, men olika betydelse:

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.
My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor.

that i stället för who och which går bra går inte

The film (that) we saw was boring — that kan strykas, efter det står we. I en icke-nödvändig relativsats står relativordet alltid kvar: The film, which we saw last week, was boring. Icke-nödvändiga relativsatser är vanligare i skrift; i tal säger man ofta två separata meningar i stället.

Alla relativord:

om vad exempel
who människor the woman who called
which saker och djur the car which I bought
that människor och saker, bara i nödvändiga the book that you lent me
whose vars the man whose car was stolen
where plats the town where I grew up
when tid the summer when we met

whose ersätter his, her, their, its: I met a woman. Her son goes to my school. → I met a woman whose son goes to my school. Det fungerar också om saker: a house whose windows face the sea — fast oftare säger man a house with windows facing the sea.

where eller which. where betyder ”där”, ”i vilken” och ersätter en hel plats. Om verbet i relativsatsen har ett eget objekt — besökte vad, såg vad — behövs which eller that:

the town where I live bor var? — where
the town (that) I visited besökte vad? — that eller ingenting

Prepositionen hamnar sist. Prepositionen stannar hos sitt verb, i slutet av relativsatsen: the man (who) I work with, the flat (that) we live in, the people I spoke to. Varianten the man with whom I work finns, men den låter mycket formell.

when utelämnas ofta efter tidsord: I remember the day (when) we met.

Fler exempel:

Edinburgh, which is the capital of Scotland, has a famous festival.
The flat we live in is quite small. Lägenheten som vi bor i är liten.
Is that the café where you had breakfast? Är det kaféet där du åt frukost?
July is the month when most people go on holiday. Juli är månaden då…

Så säger man inte. ✗ The book which I bought it yesterday is good → ✓ The book which I bought yesterday is good. Relativsatsens objekt är redan uttryckt med which, ett andra it är överflödigt.

Testa dig själv. Behövs kommatecken i My father who is a doctor works in Leeds?

visa svaren
ja — det finns bara en pappa, och satsen tillför bara uppgifter: My father, who is a doctor, works in Leeds; visit har ett objekt, därför behövs that, which eller ingenting: the town (that) I visited; the people I work with / the people who I work with / the people that I work with.

Vanliga fel hos svensktalande

skriven för ditt språk
1

which om människor

✗ The man which lives next door is a pilot

✓ The man who lives next door is a pilot

Om människor — who eller that.

2

that efter kommatecken

✗ My brother, that lives in Italy, is a doctor

✓ My brother, who lives in Italy, is a doctor

3

”Inte” före verbet

”Grannarna som inte bor här” → ✗ the neighbours who not live here → ✓ the neighbours who don't live here.

My brother ‖ who lives in Italy ‖ is a doctor.

My brother who lives in Italy is a doctor.

whose /huːz/ låter exakt som who's. that i en relativsats är obetonat, /ðət/: the book that you lent me — /ðə ˈbʊk ðət juː ˈlent miː/.

Text

The town where I grew up is on the north-east coast of England, about an hour from Newcastle. It's the kind of place that most people drive through without stopping.

My grandfather, who was born there in 1938, worked at the port all his life. The port, which was once the busiest on that part of the coast, closed in the eighties, and many families lost their main income.

We lived in a narrow house that looked straight out at the sea. The room I slept in was at the top, and on windy nights I could hear the waves. The house has been sold twice since then, and the people who live there now have painted it bright blue.

Last summer I went back for a weekend. In a café near the harbour I met an old man whose father had worked with my grandfather. He remembered the winter when the harbour froze — something my grandfather had told me about, but I had never quite believed. We talked for two hours, and before I left he showed me an old photo that he kept in his wallet: both our families on the beach, all smiling at the camera.
