18 minEn A2 #27 aprendiste la regla de las oraciones condicionales: detrás de if que habla del futuro va el presente — If it rains, I'll stay at home, y no ✗ If it will rain.
La parte con when, as soon as, until, before, after, by the time dice en qué momento pasará algo, y en ella no hay futuro. I'll call you when I get there.
|---|---|---|
| when | cuando | I'll call you when I get home. |
| as soon as | en cuanto | We'll start as soon as everyone arrives. |
| once | en cuanto, una vez que | Once you pay, you'll get an email with the tickets. |
| until / till | hasta que | Wait here until I come back. |
| before | antes de que, antes de | Switch off the lights before you leave. |
| after | después de que | I'll ring you after the meeting finishes. |
| while | mientras | I'll make dinner while you're having a shower. |
| by the time | para cuando | By the time you arrive, the food will be ready. |
I won't leave until you get back. What will you do when you finish university? Will you call me as soon as you hear something?
El orden de las partes es libre. Si la parte con la conjunción va primero, detrás de ella se pone coma: When I get home, I'll call you. Si va segunda, no hay coma: I'll call you when I get home.
As soon as I've read the book, I'll give it back.
- quedar y prometer: I'll text you as soon as I land., «Te escribo en cuanto aterrice»;
- dar una instrucción: Don't open the door until the light goes green., «No abras la puerta hasta que la luz se ponga verde»;
- organizar un plan paso a paso: After we've had lunch, we'll go to the museum.
| I'll call you when I see her. |
| I'll call you if I see her. | A lo mejor la veo, a lo mejor no. |
| When will you be back? | La pregunta «¿cuándo?»: hace falta el futuro. |
| I don't know when he'll be back. | Pregunta indirecta (B1 #19): hace falta el futuro. |
| I'll call you when he gets back. | Conjunción temporal: presente. |
Every time I see him, he's on the phone., sobre lo que pasa siempre. Whenever you're in Leeds, come and see us., sobre el futuro, pero you're, no ✗ you'll be.
every y each. Each room has a TV.
The teacher spoke to each student. |
También se diferencian en la forma:
- each sirve también para dos: She had a bag in each hand. every, solo para tres o más.
- each funciona solo y con of: each of us, each of the rooms, We each got a copy. every no puede: ✗ every of us → ✓ each of us o every one of us.
- Con almost, nearly, not solo sirve every: almost every day, Not every hotel has a lift.
Donde valen los dos, la diferencia casi no se nota: every time y each time significan lo mismo.
Más ejemplos:
| I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything. | Te aviso en cuanto sepa algo. |
| We won't start until everyone is here. | No empezamos hasta que estén todos. |
| Before you go, could you close the window? |
| By the time you get there, the shop will be closed. |
| I'll read the news while you're driving. | Yo leo las noticias mientras tú conduces. |
| The bus comes every twenty minutes. | El autobús pasa cada veinte minutos. |
| Each of the rooms has its own bathroom. | Cada habitación tiene su propio baño. |
| Each of you will get a copy when the meeting starts. |
Así no se dice. ✗ every days → ✓ every day.
Ponte a prueba. ¿Cómo se dice «Llámame en cuanto llegues»? ¿Por qué en I don't know when she'll arrive va will? ¿each o every: She wore a ring on ___ hand?

Errores de los hispanohablantes
escrito para tu idiomawill detrás de when
✗ I'll call you when I will get home → ✓ I'll call you when I get home. Es el error más frecuente de la lección, y con as soon as, until, before, after es el mismo: ✗ as soon as I will know → ✓ as soon as I know.
El «no» de «hasta que no»
✗ We won't leave until the rain doesn't stop
✓ We won't leave until the rain stops
Detrás de until nunca va not.
«Todos los días» palabra por palabra
✗ I go swimming all the days → ✓ I go swimming every day. ✗ every weeks → ✓ every week.
| I'll call you when I get home. | /aɪl ˈkɔːl jə wen aɪ ɡet ˈhəʊm/ — when, débil |
| as soon as I know | /əz ˈsuːn əz aɪ ˈnəʊ/ — los dos as suenan /əz/ |
| until I come back | /ənˈtɪl aɪ kʌm ˈbæk/ — /ənˈtɪlaɪ/, de un tirón |
Texto
5 minHi Sam,
Here's the plan for Friday. I'll get to the venue at eight, and I'll text you as soon as I arrive. Please don't let anyone in until I've checked the room — the projector didn't work last time.
When the participants arrive, each of them will get a badge and a printed programme. Every badge has a name and a group number on it. There are forty people, so we'll need two tables: one for groups one to three and the other for groups four and five.
The first session starts at half past nine. Before it begins, could you check that every chair has a pen and a feedback form? While I'm giving the introduction, you can look after the late arrivals.
We'll have a short break every hour and a half. After lunch, the groups will swap rooms, so some people will stay where they are and others will move upstairs.
By the time we finish, everyone will be tired, so let's keep the closing short. I'll send you the photos once I get home.
One other thing: could you bring another extension lead? We never have enough. If you have any questions, call me — I'll be in the office until six on Thursday.
Thanks! Jo
