Alcune parole le conosci già: to + verbo nel senso di «per» (A2 #21), because, so, because of (A2 #31).

+ frase + nome o -ing
scopo so that — (con un verbo: to, in order to)
causa because, as, since because of
concessione although, though, even though despite, in spite of

Lo scopo — a che scopo.

to + verbo è il modo più frequente: I came in early to finish the report. — «Sono venuto prima per finire la relazione».

in order to è la stessa cosa, solo più formale; si scrive così nelle lettere e negli avvisi: We have changed the timetable in order to reduce delays. La negazione è in order not to: I left early in order not to miss the train.

so that + frase serve quando lo scopo ha un suo soggetto: I left the key under the mat so that she could get in.

I'm writing it down so that I don't forget. Me lo scrivo per non dimenticarlo.
I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget. Me lo sono scritto per non dimenticarlo.
Speak louder so that everyone can hear you. Parla più forte, perché tutti ti sentano.

Nel parlato that spesso si toglie: I left the key so she could get in.

I went out for some milk. We stopped for lunch. Davanti a un verbo for non si mette: ✗ for buy → ✓ to buy.

Non confondere so that e so … that. Nella lezione B1 #30 c'era so … that — «così… che»: la conseguenza. Qui so that è «perché, affinché»: lo scopo. Si distinguono da una cosa: se tra so e that c'è una parola:

I left early so that I could catch the train. Sono uscito presto per prendere il treno. — scopo
I left so early that I caught the earlier train. — conseguenza

La causa — perché.

because + frase: We took a taxi because it was raining. because of + nome: We took a taxi because of the rain.

As it was late, we decided to stay. Since you're here, can you help me? Suona un po' più formale di because. since lo conosci dall'A2 #5 come «da quando»; li distingue il tempo del verbo: I've lived here since I was ten — tempo, Since you're busy, I'll ask Tom — causa.

Nel parlato alla domanda Why? si può rispondere con un solo Because…: — Why are you leaving? — Because I'm tired.

although + frase: Although it was expensive, we bought it. though è la stessa cosa, solo più colloquiale. Può stare anche proprio alla fine, dopo una virgola: It was expensive. We bought it, though.

despite e in spite of + nome o -ing: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, she finished the report. despite — senza of, in spite of — con of. Per unire una frase intera ci vuole despite the fact that: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.

however — «tuttavia, però». However, we went out. Il modo più semplice è but: It was raining, but we went out.

Una congiunzione per un legame. In inglese although e but insieme non si mettono, come in italiano «ma» non si aggiunge dopo «sebbene»: o Although it was raining, we went out, o It was raining, but we went out.

Come riconoscere un'obiezione. Formule pronte per la conversazione:

That's true, but I still think… È vero, ma continuo a pensare…
I see your point, but… Capisco che cosa intendi, ma…
I know it's expensive. Even so, it's worth it. Lo so che è caro. Eppure ne vale la pena.
Although it costs more, it'll save us time.

on time e in time. Qui l'italiano fa la stessa distinzione:

The train left on time. in orario, esattamente secondo l'orario, senza ritardo
We got to the station in time to catch the train. in tempo: il tempo è bastato

on time — nel momento stabilito, non più tardi. in time — abbastanza presto per fare qualcosa: in time for dinner, in time to say goodbye. just in time — «appena in tempo, all'ultimo momento».

Altri esempi:

I'm learning Spanish to talk to my wife's family.
We booked early so that we could get a good price.
The match was cancelled because of the snow.
As we had no car, we took the bus.
Despite all the problems, the project was a success. Nonostante tutti i problemi, il progetto è riuscito.

Così non si dice. ✗ in order to that she could come → ✓ so that she could come.

Che differenza c'è tra I left early so that I could catch the train e I left so early that I caught the train? Riscrivi con despite: Although he was ill, he went to work. on time o in time: We got there just ___ to see the start?

mostra le risposte
la prima è uno scopo (per prendere il treno), la seconda una conseguenza (così presto che l'ho preso); Despite being ill, he went to work o Despite his illness, he went to work; in time.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

«Nonostante» + frase

«Nonostante fosse tardi, abbiamo continuato» → ✗ Despite it was late, we kept working → ✓ Although it was late… o Despite the late hour…

2

«Anche se» parola per parola

✗ Also if it was expensive, we bought it

✓ Even though it was expensive, we bought it

o Although it was expensive… «Anche se» non è also if: è although o even though.

3

«Per» + verbo tradotto con for

«Sono venuto per finire la relazione» → ✗ I came for finish the report → ✓ I came to finish the report. È l'errore dell'A2 #21: for solo davanti a un nome (for lunch), davanti a un verbo — to.

4

Il «per» della causa tradotto con for

«La partita è stata annullata per la neve» → ✗ The match was cancelled for the snow → ✓ because of the snow. Come nell'A2 #31: la causa è because of davanti a un nome e because davanti a una frase.

Pronuncia

4 min

though, through, thought — tre parole simili, facili da confondere all'ascolto:

though /ðəʊ/ — /ð/ sonora, dittongo /əʊ/
through /θruː/ — «attraverso», /θ/ sorda
thought /θɔːt/ — «pensato», /θ/ sorda

Although it was raining ↗ ‖ we went out ↘.

However all'inizio della frase è un pezzo a sé, con la sua pausa: However ‖ we went out.

Testo

5 min

Last month I sold my car, and most of my friends think I've made a mistake. I understand why. Although the car was old, it was reliable, and I loved driving it.

So why did I do it? Mainly because of money. Since I started working from home, I've used the car about once a week, but I've still paid for insurance and parking every month. I sold it in order to save that money, and I bought a good bike so that I could still get around town.

My sister said, "You'll regret it as soon as winter comes." That's true, I'm sure — cycling in the rain isn't fun. Even so, I think it was the right decision. Despite the bad weather last week, I got to work on time every day, and I feel fitter than I have for years.

And when I really need a car, I can hire one. Last Saturday I hired a small van to help my brother move house. We got everything into it just in time to return it before six, and it cost much less than a month of parking.

I didn't sell my car because I hate driving. I sold it because I didn't need it any more. However, I've kept my driving licence in my wallet. You never know.

Esempio

Last year I moved to a smaller flat. I did it because of the rent, which had become too high. I also wanted to live closer to work so that I could walk there. My friends said the flat was too small. That's true, but I don't need much space. Although I miss my old balcony, I'm happier now. Despite the smaller kitchen, I cook more than before.
