文法

「髪を切った」「車を直した」「新しい窓を入れた」 — 日本語では、こうした文から、自分の手でしたのか、お金を払ってだれかにしてもらったのかがわからないことがよくあります。英語はこれを区別します。頼んでほかの人にしてもらったのなら — 修理の人、美容師、配達の人 — have ＋ もの ＋ 過去分詞と言います。

形：have — 何を — 過去分詞。 これは第13課の受け身に、頼んだ人を付け加えたものです： My hair was cut — 「髪が切られた」が I had my hair cut — 「（美容院で）髪を切ってもらった」になります。順番は決まっています：まず have、次にもの、最後に過去分詞。過去分詞は変わらず、時制は have が表します。

時制 例 日本語
現在形 I have my hair cut every six weeks. 6週間ごとに髪を切ってもらっている。
現在進行形 We're having the kitchen painted. 今、台所を塗装してもらっている。
過去形 I had my car repaired last week. 先週、車を修理に出した。
現在完了形 I've just had my eyes tested. ちょうど視力を検査してもらったところだ。
going to We're going to have new windows put in. 新しい窓を取りつけてもらうつもりだ。
助動詞 You should have the boiler checked every year. ボイラーは毎年点検してもらったほうがいい。

ものは代名詞にでき、同じ場所に入ります：I had it cut、We had them delivered。

否定文と疑問文。 ここの have は、have breakfast と同じふつうの動詞（一般動詞）です。だから否定文と疑問文は do、does、did で作ります：I didn't have it cut、Did you have your car repaired?、Where do you have your hair cut?、How often do you have your windows cleaned? 同じ理由で、ここの had は 'd に短縮しません。

どんなときに使うか。

サービス：修理、ヘアカット、配達、掃除。We had the sofa delivered on Saturday. — 土曜日にソファを届けてもらった。注文したのは私たちで、運んだのはほかの人です。

自分の身に起きたいやなこと：They had their car stolen. — 彼らは車を盗まれた。 She had her bag stolen on the train. ここではだれも何も頼んでいません：この形は、被害を受けたのがものだけでなく人だということを表しているだけです。

have の代わりの get — 意味は同じで、より会話的です：I need to get my phone fixed. Where did you get your hair cut? イギリスの話し言葉では get がとてもよく使われます。特に、手配が大変なことや、ずっと先延ばしにしていたことについてです。

サービスの頼み方。 店や電話では、決まった言い方が役に立ちます：

I'd like to have this jacket cleaned, please. このジャケットをクリーニングしてほしいのですが。
I need to get my watch repaired. 時計を修理してもらわないといけない。
How much does it cost to have a carpet cleaned? じゅうたんのクリーニングはいくらですか。
How long will it take? どのくらい時間がかかりますか。
When will it be ready? いつできあがりますか。

比べてみましょう。 同じ語でできた3つの文が、3つの違うことを言っています：

I cut my hair. 自分で、はさみで髪を切った。
I had my hair cut. 美容院で髪を切ってもらった。
I had cut my hair. 自分で髪を切っていた — ほかのできごとより前に（過去完了形、第1課）。

すべては過去分詞の位置で決まります：もののあとならサービス、had のすぐあとなら過去完了形です。もう1組：My car was repaired — 車が修理された（だれが手配したかは関係ない）； I had my car repaired — 私が車を修理に出した。

頼んだ人のいない get：「〜されてしまった」。 ものが主語で、そのすぐあとに get と過去分詞が続くと、会話的な受け身になります：My bike got stolen. — 「自転車を盗まれた」。これは第13課の受け身で、was の代わりに got を使ったものです。思いがけず起きたこと、たいていはいやなことについて使います：Our flight got cancelled. He got hurt in a match. I got caught in the rain. 疑問文と否定文は do で作ります：Did anyone get hurt? The parcel didn't get delivered. 書き言葉やニュースでは、ふつう was を使います：The flight was cancelled.

I got my bike repaired. 自転車を修理に出した — 頼んで、してもらった。
My bike got stolen. 自転車を盗まれた — 身に起きたこと。

1つ目の文では get のあとにものがあります — これはサービスです。2つ目ではものが主語になっていて、だれも何も頼んでいません。同じいやなことは have でも言えます：I had my bike stolen は My bike got stolen と同じ意味です。

ほかの例：

I'm having my eyes tested tomorrow. 明日、視力を検査してもらいに行く。
We had the whole flat cleaned before we moved out. 引っ越す前に、部屋全体を掃除してもらった。
She has her nails done every two weeks. 彼女は2週間ごとにネイルをしてもらっている。
I've never had my photo taken by a professional. プロのカメラマンに写真を撮ってもらったことは一度もない。

こうは言いません。 ✗ I'd my hair cut yesterday → ✓ I had my hair cut yesterday。一般動詞の had は、書くときも話すときも短縮しません。

確かめてみましょう。 「時計を直してもらった」（店に出した）は英語でどう言いますか。I had cut my hair はどういう意味ですか。「いつもどこで髪を切ってもらってるの？」はどう尋ねますか。

「髪を切った」をそのまま I cut my hair にする。

美容院に行った話で I cut my hair yesterday と言うと、英語では自分ではさみを持ったことになります。I had my hair cut か I got my hair cut が必要です。日本語の「髪を切った」はだれが切ったのかを言わないので、違いを感じにくいのです。英語では、この形がその違いを表します。

had のすぐあとに過去分詞を置く。

I had repaired my car は「修理に出した」ではなく、「ほかのできごとより前に自分で車を直していた」（過去完了形）です。had ＋ 過去分詞を過去完了形としてしっかり覚えているので、過去分詞が前に出てしまいます。サービスなら、ものが過去分詞の前です： I had my car repaired。

過去分詞の代わりに原形。

✗ I had my car repair、✗ We're having the kitchen paint → ✓ I had my car repaired、We're having the kitchen painted。学校で習う使役の「have ＋ 人 ＋ 原形」（「人に〜させる、してもらう」）と混ざりやすい形です。ここで have のあとにあるのは人ではなく、「されるもの」なので、受け身と同じ過去分詞が必要です。

「〜を盗まれた」を was stolen で言う。

✗ She was stolen her bag on the train

✓ She had her bag stolen on the train / Her bag was stolen on the train

。日本語では「彼女はバッグを盗まれた」と被害を受けた人を主語にできますが、英語の受け身では、人を主語にしたままものを後ろに置くことはできません。人を主語にしたいときは、have ＋ もの ＋ 過去分詞です。

発音

いちばん強い強勢は、動詞ではなくものに置きます：

I had my hair cut. We're having the kitchen painted. I need to get my watch repaired.

過去分詞は弱めに発音します。これで、意味を表す動詞に強勢がある過去完了形と耳で区別できます： I'd cut my hair。

サービスの had は代名詞とつながりません： I had は /aɪ hæd/ か /aɪ həd/ で、/aɪd/ ではありません。/aɪd/ と聞こえたら、それは過去完了形か would です。

hairdresser's /ˈheədresəz/ — イギリス英語では、この語で美容院そのものを表します： I'm going to the hairdresser's。

This has been a busy week in our flat. We're having the kitchen painted, so everything from the kitchen is in the hall, and we're eating in the living room.

On Monday I had the washing machine repaired. A man came at nine, changed a small part and left after twenty minutes. It cost forty pounds — less than I had expected. On Wednesday I finally had my hair cut. I hadn't had it cut since the summer, and my neighbour had started to make jokes about it.

Next month we're going to have new windows put in. The old ones are very thin, and in winter the cold comes straight through them.

There is some bad news too. Our neighbours had their car stolen last week, right outside the house. Last year their bikes got stolen from the garden too. So we've decided to have a security camera installed above the front door. This morning I rang a local company.

— Hello, I'd like to have a security camera installed. When could you do it? — We could come on Friday morning. Would nine o'clock be all right? — Perfect. And could I get the old light over the door removed at the same time? — No problem. That'll be another fifteen pounds.
