Suomessa ero näkyy, kun käytät teettoverbiä: ”leikkautin hiukseni”, ”korjautin auton”, ”asennutimme uudet ikkunat”. Arkipuheessa sanotaan kuitenkin usein ”vaihdoimme ikkunat”, vaikka työn teki asentaja. Englanti erottaa nämä aina. Jos työn teki joku toinen sinun pyynnöstäsi — korjaaja, kampaaja, lähetti — sanotaan have + kohde + kolmas muoto.

Muoto: have — MITÄ — kolmas muoto. Se on oppitunnin B1 #13 passiivi, johon on lisätty tilaaja: My hair was cut — ”hiukseni leikattiin” — muuttuu muotoon I had my hair cut — ”leikkautin hiukseni (kampaamossa)”. Järjestys on tiukka: ensin have, sitten kohde, sitten kolmas muoto. Kolmas muoto ei muutu, aikamuodon näyttää have.

Kohteen voi korvata pronominilla, ja se tulee samalle paikalle: I had it cut, We had them delivered.

Kielto ja kysymys. have on tässä tavallinen pääverbi, kuten ilmauksessa have breakfast. Siksi kielto ja kysymys muodostetaan do-, does- ja did-apuverbillä: I didn't have it cut, Did you have your car repaired?, Where do you have your hair cut?, How often do you have your windows cleaned? Samasta syystä had-sanaa ei tässä lyhennetä muotoon 'd.

Milloin rakennetta käytetään.

Palvelu: korjaus, hiustenleikkuu, kotiinkuljetus, siivous. We had the sofa delivered on Saturday. — Sohva tuotiin meille lauantaina. Me tilasimme sen, mutta kuljetuksen hoitivat muut.

Ikävä tapahtuma, joka sattui sinulle: They had their car stolen. — Heiltä varastettiin auto. She had her bag stolen on the train. Tässä kukaan ei tilannut mitään: rakenne näyttää vain, että vahingon kärsi ihminen eikä pelkästään esine.

get have-verbin sijaan — täsmälleen sama, vain puhekielisempi: I need to get my phone fixed. Where did you get your hair cut? Brittiläisessä puheessa get on hyvin yleinen, erityisesti kun asiaa on vaikea järjestää tai sitä on lykätty pitkään.

Miten palvelu tilataan. Korjaamossa tai puhelimessa auttavat valmiit fraasit:

I'd like to have this jacket cleaned, please. Haluaisin tämän takin pesuun.
I need to get my watch repaired. Minun täytyy viedä kelloni korjattavaksi.
How much does it cost to have a carpet cleaned? Paljonko maton pesettäminen maksaa?
How long will it take? Kauanko siihen menee?
When will it be ready? Milloin se on valmis?

Vertaa. Kolme samoista sanoista koottua lausetta kertoo kolmesta eri asiasta:

I cut my hair. Leikkasin hiukseni itse, saksilla.
I had my hair cut. Leikkautin hiukseni — kampaamossa.
I had cut my hair. Olin leikannut hiukseni itse — ennen toista tapahtumaa (Past Perfect, B1 #1).

Kaiken ratkaisee kolmannen muodon paikka: kohteen jälkeen — palvelu, heti had-sanan jälkeen — pluskvamperfekti. Ja vielä yksi pari: My car was repaired — auto korjattiin, eikä ole väliä, kuka sen järjesti; I had my car repaired — vein sen korjattavaksi.

get ilman tilaajaa: ”minulle kävi niin”. Jos esine on subjektina ja heti sen jälkeen tulevat get ja kolmas muoto, syntyy puhekielinen passiivi: My bike got stolen. — ”Minulta varastettiin pyörä”. Se on oppitunnin B1 #13 passiivi, mutta was-sanan tilalla on got. Näin puhutaan siitä, mikä tapahtui odottamatta, useimmiten ikävästä: Our flight got cancelled. He got hurt in a match. I got caught in the rain. Kysymys ja kielto muodostetaan do-apuverbillä: Did anyone get hurt? The parcel didn't get delivered. Kirjoituksessa ja uutisissa sanotaan yleensä was: The flight was cancelled.

I got my bike repaired. Korjautin pyöräni — se tehtiin minulle, tilauksesta.
My bike got stolen. Minulta varastettiin pyörä — minulle kävi niin.

Ensimmäisessä lauseessa get-verbin jälkeen on kohde — se on palvelu. Toisessa kohteesta on tullut subjekti, eikä kukaan tilannut mitään. Saman ikävän tapahtuman voi kertoa myös have-verbillä: I had my bike stolen tarkoittaa samaa kuin My bike got stolen.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ I'd my hair cut yesterday → ✓ I had my hair cut yesterday. Pääverbi had kirjoitetaan ja lausutaan kokonaan.

Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”korjautin kelloni” — veit sen korjaamoon? Mitä tarkoittaa I had cut my hair? Miten kysytään ”Missä käyt leikkauttamassa hiuksesi?”

Pelkkä verbi tilauksen sijaan

I cut my hair yesterday kampaamokäynnistä tarkoittaa englanniksi, että tartuit saksiin itse. Oikein on I had my hair cut tai I got my hair cut. Suomen arkipuheessa ”maalasimme keittiön”, ”vaihdoimme ikkunat” käy, vaikka työn tekivät ammattilaiset, ja sama siirtyy englantiin: We painted the kitchen kertoo, että maalasitte itse.

I had my hair cut. Suomessa ”teimme keittiöremontin” sanotaan, vaikka remontin teki urakoitsija, ja käsi hakee sanaa make tai do. Tilatun palvelun ilmaisevat englannissa vain have ja get.

Kolmas muoto ennen kohdetta

I had repaired my car ei tarkoita ”korjautin autoni”, vaan ”olin itse korjannut auton ennen toista tapahtumaa” (Past Perfect). Suomessa koko asia on yksi verbi, ”korjautin”, eikä se anna mallia sanajärjestykselle; tuttu had + kolmas muoto tulee helposti ensin. Palvelussa kohde on kolmannen muodon edessä: I had my car repaired.

Kysymys ilman do-apuverbiä

Suomen ”korjautitko autosi?” alkaa verbillä, ja had siirtyy helposti eteen samalla tavalla kuin perfektissä ja kysymyksessä Have you got…? Tässä have on pääverbi, ja kysymyksen muodostaa do.

Pääpaino osuu kohteeseen, ei verbiin:

I had my hair cut. We're having the kitchen painted. I need to get my watch repaired.

Kolmas muoto kuulostaa hiljaisemmalta. Juuri tämä erottaa rakenteen korvalla Past Perfectistä, jossa paino on pääverbillä: I'd cut my hair.

This has been a busy week in our flat. We're having the kitchen painted, so everything from the kitchen is in the hall, and we're eating in the living room.

On Monday I had the washing machine repaired. A man came at nine, changed a small part and left after twenty minutes. It cost forty pounds — less than I had expected. On Wednesday I finally had my hair cut. I hadn't had it cut since the summer, and my neighbour had started to make jokes about it.

Next month we're going to have new windows put in. The old ones are very thin, and in winter the cold comes straight through them.

There is some bad news too. Our neighbours had their car stolen last week, right outside the house. Last year their bikes got stolen from the garden too. So we've decided to have a security camera installed above the front door. This morning I rang a local company.

— Hello, I'd like to have a security camera installed. When could you do it? — We could come on Friday morning. Would nine o'clock be all right? — Perfect. And could I get the old light over the door removed at the same time? — No problem. That'll be another fifteen pounds.
