Forma: have — QUÉ — tercera forma.

Present Simple I have my hair cut every six weeks. Me corto el pelo cada seis semanas.
Present Continuous We're having the kitchen painted. Nos están pintando la cocina.
Past Simple I had my car repaired last week.
Present Perfect I've just had my eyes tested.
going to We're going to have new windows put in. Vamos a poner ventanas nuevas.
verbo modal You should have the boiler checked every year.

I had it cut, We had them delivered.

Negación y pregunta. Aquí have es un verbo principal normal, como en have breakfast. Por eso la negación y la pregunta se construyen con do, does, did: I didn't have it cut, Did you have your car repaired?, Where do you have your hair cut?, How often do you have your windows cleaned?

She had her bag stolen on the train.

get en lugar de have: lo mismo, pero más coloquial: I need to get my phone fixed. Where did you get your hair cut?

I'd like to have this jacket cleaned, please.
I need to get my watch repaired. Tengo que llevar el reloj a arreglar.
How much does it cost to have a carpet cleaned? ¿Cuánto cuesta limpiar una alfombra?
How long will it take? ¿Cuánto tiempo tardará?
When will it be ready? ¿Cuándo estará listo?

Compara.

I cut my hair.
I had my hair cut. Me cortaron el pelo en la peluquería.
I had cut my hair.

Y otra pareja: My car was repaired: arreglaron el coche, y no importa quién lo organizó; I had my car repaired: lo llevé a arreglar.

get sin quien encarga: «me ha pasado». He got hurt in a match. I got caught in the rain. La pregunta y la negación, con do: Did anyone get hurt? The parcel didn't get delivered. Por escrito y en las noticias se suele decir was: The flight was cancelled.

I got my bike repaired.
My bike got stolen. Me robaron la bici: me pasó a mí.

I'm having my eyes tested tomorrow.
We had the whole flat cleaned before we moved out.
She has her nails done every two weeks. Se hace la manicura cada dos semanas.
I've never had my photo taken by a professional.

✗ I'd my hair cut yesterday → ✓ I had my hair cut yesterday.

Ponte a prueba. ¿Qué significa I had cut my hair?

1

«Me corté el pelo» palabra por palabra

I cut my hair yesterday, después de ir a la peluquería, en inglés significa que cogiste las tijeras tú mismo. Hace falta I had my hair cut o I got my hair cut. Lo mismo en la pregunta: «¿Dónde te cortas el pelo?» es Where do you have your hair cut?

2

«Hacerse» con make

✗ I made my hair cut

✗ We made a repair in the kitchen

✓ I had my hair cut

We had some work done in the kitchen.

3

✗ I had my car repair

✗ We're having the kitchen paint

✓ I had my car repaired

We're having the kitchen painted.

5

«Me robaron el móvil» palabra por palabra

✗ They stole me the phone

✓ I had my phone stolen / My phone got stolen

I had my hair cut. We're having the kitchen painted. I need to get my watch repaired.

I'd cut my hair.

had en el servicio no se funde con el pronombre: I had es /aɪ hæd/ o /aɪ həd/, pero no /aɪd/. Si oyes /aɪd/, es Past Perfect o would.

hairdresser's /ˈheədresəz/: así se llama en inglés británico la propia peluquería: I'm going to the hairdresser's.

This has been a busy week in our flat. We're having the kitchen painted, so everything from the kitchen is in the hall, and we're eating in the living room.

On Monday I had the washing machine repaired. A man came at nine, changed a small part and left after twenty minutes. It cost forty pounds — less than I had expected. On Wednesday I finally had my hair cut. I hadn't had it cut since the summer, and my neighbour had started to make jokes about it.

Next month we're going to have new windows put in. The old ones are very thin, and in winter the cold comes straight through them.

There is some bad news too. Our neighbours had their car stolen last week, right outside the house. Last year their bikes got stolen from the garden too. So we've decided to have a security camera installed above the front door. This morning I rang a local company.

— Hello, I'd like to have a security camera installed. When could you do it? — We could come on Friday morning. Would nine o'clock be all right? — Perfect. And could I get the old light over the door removed at the same time? — No problem. That'll be another fifteen pounds.
