+ zin + zelfstandig naamwoord of -ing
doel so that — (met een werkwoord: to, in order to)
reden because, as, since because of
toegeving although, though, even though despite, in spite of

Doel — waarvoor.

to + werkwoord is de gewoonste manier: I came in early to finish the report.

in order to — hetzelfde, alleen formeler; zo schrijf je in brieven en mededelingen: We have changed the timetable in order to reduce delays. De ontkenning is in order not to: I left early in order not to miss the train.

so that + zin — ‘zodat’ — heb je nodig als het doel een eigen onderwerp heeft: I left the key under the mat so that she could get in.

I'm writing it down so that I don't forget.
I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget.
Speak louder so that everyone can hear you. Praat harder, zodat iedereen je kan horen.

In de spreektaal valt that vaak weg: I left the key so she could get in.

I went out for some milk. We stopped for lunch. Vóór een werkwoord staat geen for: ✗ for buy → ✓ to buy.

Verwar so that niet met so … that. In B1 #30 had je so … that — ‘zo …, dat’: een gevolg. Hier is so that — ‘zodat’, ‘om … te’: een doel. Het verschil zit erin of er een woord tussen so en that staat:

I left early so that I could catch the train. — doel
I left so early that I caught the earlier train. — gevolg

Reden — waarom.

because + zin: We took a taxi because it was raining. because of + zelfstandig naamwoord: We took a taxi because of the rain.

as en since + zin — ook ‘omdat, aangezien’. As it was late, we decided to stay. Since you're here, can you help me? I've lived here since I was ten — tijd, Since you're busy, I'll ask Tom — reden.

Because… antwoorden: — Why are you leaving? — Because I'm tired.

although + zin: Although it was expensive, we bought it. though — hetzelfde, alleen informeler. We bought it, though.

Even though he apologised, she didn't forgive him.

despite en in spite of + zelfstandig naamwoord of -ing: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, she finished the report. despite — zonder of, in spite of — met of. Om een hele zin aan te sluiten heb je despite the fact that nodig — ‘ondanks het feit dat’: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.

however — ‘echter’. However, we went out. De eenvoudigste manier is but: It was raining, but we went out.

Eén voegwoord per verband. Net zoals ‘hoewel’ en ‘maar’ in het Nederlands niet samen in één zin staan, gaan ook although en but niet samen: ofwel Although it was raining, we went out, ofwel It was raining, but we went out.

Een tegenwerping erkennen. Vaste formules voor een gesprek:

That's true, but I still think… Dat is waar, maar ik vind toch…
I see your point, but… Ik begrijp wat je bedoelt, maar…
I know it's expensive. Even so, it's worth it. Ik weet dat het duur is. Toch is het de moeite waard.
Although it costs more, it'll save us time.

on time en in time.

The train left on time. precies volgens de dienstregeling, zonder vertraging
We got to the station in time to catch the train. we haalden het: er was genoeg tijd

on time — op het afgesproken moment, niet later. in time — vroeg genoeg om iets nog te halen: in time for dinner, in time to say goodbye. just in time — ‘net op tijd, op het laatste moment’.

Meer voorbeelden:

I'm learning Spanish to talk to my wife's family.
We booked early so that we could get a good price. We boekten vroeg, zodat we een goede prijs konden krijgen.
The match was cancelled because of the snow. De wedstrijd werd afgelast vanwege de sneeuw.
As we had no car, we took the bus.
Despite all the problems, the project was a success.

✗ in order to that she could come → ✓ so that she could come.

Test jezelf. Wat is het verschil tussen I left early so that I could catch the train en I left so early that I caught the train? Herschrijf met despite: Although he was ill, he went to work. on time of in time: We got there just ___ to see the start?

toon de antwoorden
het eerste is een doel (om de trein te halen), het tweede een gevolg (zo vroeg dat ik hem haalde); Despite being ill, he went to work of Despite his illness, he went to work; in time.

Fouten van Nederlandstaligen

geschreven voor jouw taal
1

‘Ondanks dat’ + zin

✗ Despite it was late, we kept working

✓ Although it was late, we kept working

of Despite the late hour, we kept working.

2

Het werkwoord direct na de komma

✗ Although it was expensive, bought we it

✓ Although it was expensive, we bought it

Because of the rain, we…

3

‘Op tijd’ altijd als on time

✗ We got to the station just on time to catch the train

✓ We got to the station just in time to catch the train

through /θruː/ — ‘door’, stemloze /θ/
thought /θɔːt/ — ‘dacht’, stemloze /θ/

Although it was raining ↗ ‖ we went out ↘.

However aan het begin van een zin is een apart stuk met een eigen pauze: However ‖ we went out.

Last month I sold my car, and most of my friends think I've made a mistake. I understand why. Although the car was old, it was reliable, and I loved driving it.

So why did I do it? Mainly because of money. Since I started working from home, I've used the car about once a week, but I've still paid for insurance and parking every month. I sold it in order to save that money, and I bought a good bike so that I could still get around town.

My sister said, "You'll regret it as soon as winter comes." That's true, I'm sure — cycling in the rain isn't fun. Even so, I think it was the right decision. Despite the bad weather last week, I got to work on time every day, and I feel fitter than I have for years.

And when I really need a car, I can hire one. Last Saturday I hired a small van to help my brother move house. We got everything into it just in time to return it before six, and it cost much less than a month of parking.

I didn't sell my car because I hate driving. I sold it because I didn't need it any more. However, I've kept my driving licence in my wallet. You never know.

Voorbeeld

Last year I moved to a smaller flat. I did it because of the rent, which had become too high. I also wanted to live closer to work so that I could walk there. My friends said the flat was too small. That's true, but I don't need much space. Although I miss my old balcony, I'm happier now. Despite the smaller kitchen, I cook more than before.
