O parte din cuvinte le știi: to + verb cu sensul „ca să” (A2 #21), because, so, because of (A2 #31). Acum — setul complet.

scop so that — (cu verb: to, in order to)
cauză because, as, since because of
concesie although, though, even though despite, in spite of

Scopul — pentru ce.

to + verb e felul cel mai frecvent: I came in early to finish the report.

in order to e același lucru, doar mai oficial; așa se scrie în scrisori și anunțuri: We have changed the timetable in order to reduce delays. Negația — in order not to: I left early in order not to miss the train.

so that + propoziție e nevoie când scopul are subiectul lui: I left the key under the mat so that she could get in.

I'm writing it down so that I don't forget. Notez ca să nu uit.
I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget. Am notat ca să nu uit.
Speak louder so that everyone can hear you.

În conversație that se omite des: I left the key so she could get in.

I went out for some milk. We stopped for lunch. Înaintea verbului for nu se pune: ✗ for buy → ✓ to buy.

Nu confunda so that cu so … that. La B1 #30 a fost so … that — „atât de…, încât”: urmarea. Aici so that — „ca să”: scopul. Se deosebesc prin faptul că între so și that stă sau nu un cuvânt:

I left early so that I could catch the train. Am plecat devreme ca să prind trenul. — scop
I left so early that I caught the earlier train. — urmare

Cauza — de ce.

because + propoziție: We took a taxi because it was raining. because of + substantiv: We took a taxi because of the rain. Sensul e unul, iar forma continuării — diferită.

as și since + propoziție — tot „pentru că, deoarece”. Le folosești când cauza e cunoscută amândurora sau evidentă, și de obicei le pui la început: As it was late, we decided to stay. — „Cum era târziu, am hotărât să rămânem”. Since you're here, can you help me? — „Din moment ce ești aici, mă ajuți?”. Sună puțin mai livresc decât because. since îl știi din A2 #5 ca „de când”; le deosebește timpul verbului: I've lived here since I was ten — timp, Since you're busy, I'll ask Tom — cauză.

În conversație la întrebarea Why? poți răspunde doar cu Because…: — Why are you leaving? — Because I'm tired.

although + propoziție: Although it was expensive, we bought it. though — același lucru, doar mai colocvial. Poate sta și chiar la sfârșit, după virgulă: It was expensive. We bought it, though.

Even though he apologised, she didn't forgive him. — „Deși și-a cerut scuze, ea nu l-a iertat”.

despite și in spite of + substantiv sau -ing: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, she finished the report. despite — fără of, in spite of — cu of. Ca să legi o propoziție întreagă, e nevoie de despite the fact that — „în ciuda faptului că”: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.

however — „totuși, însă”. Nu e o conjuncție: stă între două propoziții separate, iar după el se pune virgulă: It was raining. However, we went out. Felul cel mai simplu — but: It was raining, but we went out.

În engleză although și but nu se pun împreună: ori Although it was raining, we went out, ori It was raining, but we went out.

Cum recunoști o obiecție. Formule gata făcute pentru conversație:

That's true, but I still think… E adevărat, dar tot cred că…
I see your point, but… Înțeleg ce vreți să spuneți, dar…
I know it's expensive. Even so, it's worth it. Știu că e scump. Chiar și așa, merită.
Although it costs more, it'll save us time.

on time și in time.

The train left on time. exact după program, fără întârziere
We got to the station in time to catch the train. am apucat: timpul a ajuns

on time — în momentul stabilit, nu mai târziu. in time — destul de devreme ca să apuci ceva: in time for dinner, in time to say goodbye. just in time — „chiar la țanc, în ultimul moment”.

Încă exemple:

I'm learning Spanish to talk to my wife's family.
We booked early so that we could get a good price.
The match was cancelled because of the snow. Meciul a fost anulat din cauza zăpezii.
As we had no car, we took the bus. Cum n-aveam mașină, am luat autobuzul.
Despite all the problems, the project was a success. În ciuda tuturor problemelor, proiectul a reușit.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ in order to that she could come → ✓ so that she could come. După in order to vine un verb, nu o propoziție.

Verifică-te. Prin ce se deosebește I left early so that I could catch the train de I left so early that I caught the train? Rescrie cu despite: Although he was ill, he went to work. on time sau in time: We got there just ___ to see the start?

arată răspunsurile
prima — scop (ca să prind trenul), a doua — urmare (atât de devreme, încât l-am prins); Despite being ill, he went to work sau Despite his illness, he went to work; in time.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

„Pentru a” tradus cu for

„Am venit pentru a termina raportul” → ✗ I came for to finish the report, ✗ I came for finish the report → ✓ I came to finish the report. E greșeala din A2 #21: „pentru” pare for, dar scopul exprimat printr-un verb e to + verbul.

2

„Din cauză că” → because of

„Am întârziat din cauză că traficul era groaznic” → ✗ We were late because of the traffic was bad → ✓ because the traffic was bad sau because of the bad traffic. Ca în A2 #31: „din cauza” + substantiv e because of, „din cauză că” + propoziție e because.

3

„În ciuda faptului că” scurtat

✗ Despite it was late, we kept working

✓ Although it was late…

sau Despite the late hour…

4

„Deși…, dar”

✗ Although it was raining, but we went out

✓ Although it was raining, we went out

5

„La timp” — mereu on time

✗ We got there just on time to see the start

✓ We got there just in time to see the start

Româna are o singură expresie. Dacă după ea urmează „ca să apuc…”, e in time; „la ora stabilită” e on time.

Pronunție

4 min

through /θruː/ — „prin”, /θ/ surd

Although it was raining ↗ ‖ we went out ↘.

However la începutul propoziției e o bucată aparte, cu pauza ei: However ‖ we went out.

Last month I sold my car, and most of my friends think I've made a mistake. I understand why. Although the car was old, it was reliable, and I loved driving it.

So why did I do it? Mainly because of money. Since I started working from home, I've used the car about once a week, but I've still paid for insurance and parking every month. I sold it in order to save that money, and I bought a good bike so that I could still get around town.

My sister said, "You'll regret it as soon as winter comes." That's true, I'm sure — cycling in the rain isn't fun. Even so, I think it was the right decision. Despite the bad weather last week, I got to work on time every day, and I feel fitter than I have for years.

And when I really need a car, I can hire one. Last Saturday I hired a small van to help my brother move house. We got everything into it just in time to return it before six, and it cost much less than a month of parking.

I didn't sell my car because I hate driving. I sold it because I didn't need it any more. However, I've kept my driving licence in my wallet. You never know.

Model

Last year I moved to a smaller flat. I did it because of the rent, which had become too high. I also wanted to live closer to work so that I could walk there. My friends said the flat was too small. That's true, but I don't need much space. Although I miss my old balcony, I'm happier now. Despite the smaller kitchen, I cook more than before.
