En del av orden kan du redan: to + verb i betydelsen ”för att” (A2 #21), because, so, because of (A2 #31).

avsikt so that — (med verb: to, in order to)
orsak because, as, since because of
medgivande although, though, even though despite, in spite of

Avsikt — i vilket syfte.

to + verb är det vanligaste sättet: I came in early to finish the report.

in order to betyder samma sak, bara mer formellt; så skriver man i brev och meddelanden: We have changed the timetable in order to reduce delays. Nekande — in order not to: I left early in order not to miss the train.

so that + sats behövs när avsikten har ett eget subjekt: I left the key under the mat so that she could get in. — ”så att hon kunde komma in”: det var jag som gick, men hon som skulle in. to går inte här: det skulle säga att det var jag själv som tänkte gå in. I so that-satsen står oftast ett modalt hjälpverb: om nutid och framtid — can, will eller bara presens, om det förflutna — could, would:

I'm writing it down so that I don't forget.
I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget.
Speak louder so that everyone can hear you. Tala högre så att alla hör dig.

I samtal utelämnas that ofta: I left the key so she could get in.

for + substantiv uttrycker också avsikt, men med en sak, inte en handling: I went out for some milk. We stopped for lunch. Före ett verb står inte for: ✗ for buy → ✓ to buy.

Blanda inte ihop so that och so … that. I B1 #30 fanns so … that — ”så…, att”: följd.

I left early so that I could catch the train. — avsikt
I left so early that I caught the earlier train.

because + sats: We took a taxi because it was raining. because of + substantiv: We took a taxi because of the rain.

as och since + sats betyder också ”eftersom”. As it was late, we decided to stay. Since you're here, can you help me? Det låter lite mer skriftspråkligt än because. since känner du från A2 #5 som ”sedan”; tempus skiljer dem åt: I've lived here since I was ten — tid, Since you're busy, I'll ask Tom — orsak.

I samtal kan man svara på frågan Why? med bara Because…: — Why are you leaving? — Because I'm tired.

although + sats: Although it was expensive, we bought it. though — samma sak, bara mer vardagligt. Det kan också stå allra sist, efter kommatecken: It was expensive. We bought it, though.

Even though he apologised, she didn't forgive him.

despite och in spite of + substantiv eller -ing: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, she finished the report. despite — utan of, in spite of — med of. För att koppla på en hel sats behövs despite the fact that — svenskans ”trots att”: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.

however — ”men”, ”dock”. However, we went out. Det enklaste sättet är but: It was raining, but we went out.

På engelska följs en although-sats varken av so eller av but: antingen Although it was raining, we went out, eller It was raining, but we went out.

Hur man medger en invändning. Färdiga fraser för samtal:

That's true, but I still think… Det stämmer, men jag tycker ändå…
I see your point, but… Jag förstår vad du menar, men…
I know it's expensive. Even so, it's worth it. Jag vet att det är dyrt. Ändå är det värt det.
Although it costs more, it'll save us time.

on time och in time.

The train left on time. exakt enligt tidtabellen, utan försening
We got to the station in time to catch the train. vi hann: tiden räckte

on time — vid den bestämda tidpunkten, inte senare. in time — tillräckligt tidigt för att hinna något: in time for dinner, in time to say goodbye. just in time — ”precis i sista stund”.

Fler exempel:

I'm learning Spanish to talk to my wife's family.
We booked early so that we could get a good price.
The match was cancelled because of the snow. Matchen ställdes in på grund av snön.
As we had no car, we took the bus.
Despite all the problems, the project was a success. Trots alla problem blev projektet en framgång.

Så säger man inte. ✗ in order to that she could come → ✓ so that she could come. Efter in order to kommer ett verb, inte en sats. Svenskans ”för att” tar båda — ”för att hinna”, ”för att hon skulle kunna komma” — men in order to bara verbet.

Testa dig själv. Vad är skillnaden mellan I left early so that I could catch the train och I left so early that I caught the train? Skriv om med despite: Although he was ill, he went to work. on time eller in time: We got there just ___ to see the start?

visa svaren
den första är avsikt (för att hinna), den andra följd (så tidigt att jag hann); Despite being ill, he went to work eller Despite his illness, he went to work; in time.

Vanliga fel hos svensktalande

skriven för ditt språk
1

”Trots att” som despite that

✗ Despite that it was late, we kept working

✓ Although it was late…

eller Despite the fact that it was late…

2

”För att” som for to

✗ I came early for to finish the report

✓ I came early to finish the report

3

Omvänd ordföljd efter although-satsen

✗ Although it was late, kept we working

✓ Although it was late, we kept working

4

”På grund av att” som because of

✗ We were late because of the traffic was bad

✓ because the traffic was bad

eller because of the bad traffic. ”På grund av att” tar en sats, because of bara ett substantiv.

5

”I tid” som in time

✗ The train left in time — at exactly 8.15

✓ The train left on time

”Komma i tid” är oftast on time: utan försening. in time — tillräckligt tidigt för att hinna.

Uttal

4 min

through /θruː/ — ”genom”, tonlöst /θ/

Although it was raining ↗ ‖ we went out ↘.

However i början av en mening är ett eget stycke med en egen paus: However ‖ we went out.

Last month I sold my car, and most of my friends think I've made a mistake. I understand why. Although the car was old, it was reliable, and I loved driving it.

So why did I do it? Mainly because of money. Since I started working from home, I've used the car about once a week, but I've still paid for insurance and parking every month. I sold it in order to save that money, and I bought a good bike so that I could still get around town.

My sister said, "You'll regret it as soon as winter comes." That's true, I'm sure — cycling in the rain isn't fun. Even so, I think it was the right decision. Despite the bad weather last week, I got to work on time every day, and I feel fitter than I have for years.

And when I really need a car, I can hire one. Last Saturday I hired a small van to help my brother move house. We got everything into it just in time to return it before six, and it cost much less than a month of parking.

I didn't sell my car because I hate driving. I sold it because I didn't need it any more. However, I've kept my driving licence in my wallet. You never know.

Förebild

Last year I moved to a smaller flat. I did it because of the rent, which had become too high. I also wanted to live closer to work so that I could walk there. My friends said the flat was too small. That's true, but I don't need much space. Although I miss my old balcony, I'm happier now. Despite the smaller kitchen, I cook more than before.
