Tempo declarado do núcleo.
Parte das palavras você já conhece: to + verbo no sentido de “para” (A2 #21), because, so, because of (A2 #31). Agora — o conjunto completo.
|---|---|---|
| finalidade | so that | — (com verbo: to, in order to) |
| causa | because, as, since | because of |
| concessão | although, though, even though | despite, in spite of |
Finalidade — para quê.
to + verbo é o jeito mais comum: I came in early to finish the report. — “Cheguei mais cedo para terminar o relatório”.
in order to é a mesma coisa, só que mais formal; assim se escreve em cartas e avisos: We have changed the timetable in order to reduce delays. A negação é in order not to: I left early in order not to miss the train.
so that + oração é necessário quando a finalidade tem o seu próprio sujeito: I left the key under the mat so that she could get in. Dentro de so that normalmente vem um verbo modal: sobre o presente e o futuro — can, will ou simplesmente o presente; sobre o passado — could, would:
| I'm writing it down so that I don't forget. | Estou anotando para não esquecer. |
| I wrote it down so that I wouldn't forget. | Anotei para não esquecer. |
| Speak louder so that everyone can hear you. | Fale mais alto para que todos ouçam. |
Na conversa o that muitas vezes cai: I left the key so she could get in.
I went out for some milk. We stopped for lunch. Antes de verbo não se usa for: ✗ for buy → ✓ to buy.
Não confunda so that com so … that. Na lição B1 #30 vimos so … that — “tão…, que”: a consequência. Aqui so that é “para que”: a finalidade. A diferença está em haver ou não uma palavra entre so e that:
| I left early so that I could catch the train. | Saí cedo para pegar o trem. — finalidade |
| I left so early that I caught the earlier train. | Saí tão cedo que peguei o trem anterior. — consequência |
Causa — por quê.
because + oração: We took a taxi because it was raining. because of + substantivo: We took a taxi because of the rain.
As it was late, we decided to stay. Since you're here, can you help me? I've lived here since I was ten — tempo, Since you're busy, I'll ask Tom — causa.
Na conversa, à pergunta Why? dá para responder só com Because…: — Why are you leaving? — Because I'm tired.
although + oração: Although it was expensive, we bought it. though é o mesmo, só que mais coloquial. Ele pode vir também bem no fim, depois de vírgula: It was expensive. We bought it, though.
Even though he apologised, she didn't forgive him.
despite e in spite of + substantivo ou -ing: Despite the rain, we went out. In spite of being tired, she finished the report. despite — sem of, in spite of — com of. Para ligar uma oração inteira, é preciso despite the fact that: Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out.
however — “no entanto, porém”. Não é conjunção: fica entre duas frases separadas, e depois dele vem vírgula: It was raining. However, we went out. O jeito mais simples é but: It was raining, but we went out.
Uma conjunção para cada ligação. Na fala às vezes escapa um “embora estivesse chovendo, mas saímos”; em inglês although e but juntos estão sempre errados: ou Although it was raining, we went out, ou It was raining, but we went out.
Como reconhecer uma objeção. Fórmulas prontas para a conversa:
| That's true, but I still think… | É verdade, mas eu continuo achando que… |
| I see your point, but… | Entendo o que você quer dizer, mas… |
| I know it's expensive. Even so, it's worth it. | Sei que é caro. Mesmo assim, vale a pena. |
| Although it costs more, it'll save us time. | Embora custe mais, vai nos poupar tempo. |
on time e in time.
| The train left on time. | exatamente no horário, sem atraso |
| We got to the station in time to catch the train. | deu tempo: o tempo foi suficiente |
on time — no momento marcado, não depois. in time — cedo o bastante para conseguir fazer algo: in time for dinner, in time to say goodbye. just in time — “bem a tempo, no último momento”.
Mais exemplos:
| I'm learning Spanish to talk to my wife's family. |
| We booked early so that we could get a good price. | Reservamos cedo para conseguir um bom preço. |
| The match was cancelled because of the snow. |
| As we had no car, we took the bus. | Como não tínhamos carro, fomos de ônibus. |
| Despite all the problems, the project was a success. |
Assim não se diz. ✗ in order to that she could come → ✓ so that she could come. Depois de in order to vem um verbo, e não uma oração.
Teste-se. Qual a diferença entre I left early so that I could catch the train e I left so early that I caught the train? Reescreva com despite: Although he was ill, he went to work. on time ou in time: We got there just ___ to see the start?

Erros de quem fala português do Brasil
escrito para o seu idiomadespite of
“Apesar da chuva” → ✗ despite of the rain → ✓ despite the rain ou in spite of the rain. O “de” de “apesar de” vira of, mas despite não leva preposição; o of só existe em in spite of.
despite + oração
“Apesar de que já era tarde” → ✗ Despite it was late, we kept working → ✓ Although it was late… ou Despite the late hour…
“Fui à loja para comprar pão” → ✗ I went to the shop for buy some bread → ✓ I went to the shop to buy some bread. É o erro da lição A2 #21: antes de verbo, “para” é to; for só antes de substantivo (for some bread).
because of + oração
“Por causa que o trânsito estava ruim” → ✗ We were late because of the traffic was bad → ✓ because the traffic was bad ou because of the bad traffic.
| thought | /θɔːt/ — “pensou”, /θ/ surdo |
Although it was raining ↗ ‖ we went out ↘.
However no começo da frase é um pedaço separado, com a sua própria pausa: However ‖ we went out.
Texto
5 minLast month I sold my car, and most of my friends think I've made a mistake. I understand why. Although the car was old, it was reliable, and I loved driving it.
So why did I do it? Mainly because of money. Since I started working from home, I've used the car about once a week, but I've still paid for insurance and parking every month. I sold it in order to save that money, and I bought a good bike so that I could still get around town.
My sister said, "You'll regret it as soon as winter comes." That's true, I'm sure — cycling in the rain isn't fun. Even so, I think it was the right decision. Despite the bad weather last week, I got to work on time every day, and I feel fitter than I have for years.
And when I really need a car, I can hire one. Last Saturday I hired a small van to help my brother move house. We got everything into it just in time to return it before six, and it cost much less than a month of parking.
I didn't sell my car because I hate driving. I sold it because I didn't need it any more. However, I've kept my driving licence in my wallet. You never know.

Modelo
Last year I moved to a smaller flat. I did it because of the rent, which had become too high. I also wanted to live closer to work so that I could walk there. My friends said the flat was too small. That's true, but I don't need much space. Although I miss my old balcony, I'm happier now. Despite the smaller kitchen, I cook more than before.
