请别人做，还是自己做
能请别人做某事，或者让别人不得不做某事，也能说自己一个人能做好。
标注的核心时长。核心模块中有两项未标注时长，因此实际课时比总和更长。
语法
18 分钟汉语表达对别人的愿望，人和动作直接连在一起：“我想让你给我打电话”“我希望你给我打电话”。英语 want 后面也是先说人，可是人和动作之间要有 to：I want you to call me。这个句型你在转述里已经见过： asked me to wait（第15课），advised me to rest（第16课）。这里再加上表示愿望和期待的动词。
想让你做：动词 + 人 + to + 动词。

动词后面的代词用宾格：me、you、him、her、us、them。否定通常放在 want 上：I don't want you to go 比 I want you not to go 自然。Would you like me to…? 是礼貌地主动提出帮忙——“要我…… 吗？”，和 Shall I…?（A2 第12课）意思相近。
迫使、允许、帮忙：make、let、help。 make 和 let 后面的动词不带 to，就像情态动词后面一样。help 后面带不带 to 都可以。

make——靠权力或者情势迫使别人做；东西也能“使”人做某事：电影、天气、噪音。let——允许，不阻拦。你从 Let's（A1 第16课）就认识它了：Let's go 就是 let us go，“让我们走吧”。
get + 人 + to——说服别人做，设法让别人做。 英式口语里非常常用：I'll get Tom to fix it.—— “我叫汤姆来修。”I couldn't get him to listen.——“我没法让他听进去。”和 make 不同，get 后面要用 to。
比较一下——意思一样，形式不同：

在被动语态里，make 后面要出现 to：We were made to wait for an hour.——“我们被迫等了一个小时。” let 没有被动语态，用第11课的 be allowed to 代替：We were allowed to leave early.——“我们获准提前离开。”于是有了这样一对：They let us leave early——We were allowed to leave early。
反身代词——“自己”。

它们有三种用法。
动作落在自己身上——“……自己”：I cut myself.——“我划伤了自己。”Did you hurt yourself?——“你没伤着吧？”She taught herself Italian.——“她自学了意大利语。”还有两句礼貌的套话：Help yourself!——“别客气，随便吃！”，Enjoy yourselves!——“祝你们玩得开心！”。
“亲自”，不是别人——表示强调，放在句末或者紧跟在名词后面：I'll do it myself.——“我自己来。”Did you make this cake yourself? The town itself is small, but the beaches are beautiful.——“小城本身不大……”。
by myself——“独自，一个人；没人帮忙”：I live by myself.——“我一个人住。”She built the website by herself. on my own 意思相同：I did it on my own.
很多动词在英语里不带反身代词： wash——洗漱，get dressed——穿衣服，relax——放松，feel——感觉， worry——担心，meet——见面，hurry——赶快。汉语可以说“放松一下自己”，英语一般只说 relax。只有动作真的落在自己身上、而且这一点很重要的时候，才加 myself：I cut myself，但 I washed and got dressed。
不能这样说。 ✗ I want he to come → ✓ I want him to come。want 后面用宾格：him，不是 he。
自我检测。 “要我帮您吗？”英语怎么说？She let me to use her car 错在哪里？“我自己把自行车修好了”怎么说？

中文母语者的常见错误
已针对你的语言编写人后面漏掉 to。
✗ I want you help me → ✓ I want you to help me。✗ Would you like me open the window? → ✓ Would you like me to open the window? 汉语“我想让你帮我”“要我开窗吗”里，人和动作直接连在一起，中间什么也没有。英语 want、would like、expect、need 后面，人和动词之间一定要有 to。
make、let 后面加 to。
✗ He made me to wait → ✓ He made me wait。✗ My parents didn't let me to go out → ✓ My parents didn't let me go out。学了 want me to、ask me to、allow me to，就容易把 make 和 let 也套进这个句型。被动语态正好相反：We were made to wait；let 没有被动语态： ✗ We were let to leave early → ✓ We were allowed to leave early。
每个“让”都译成 let。
汉语的“让”既可以是允许，也可以是要求、迫使：“老师让我们重写作文”“这部电影让我哭了”。英语 let 只表示允许：The teacher let us rewrite the essay 是老师准许我们重写。要求或者迫使用 make：✗ The film let me cry → ✓ The film made me cry。
“自己住”译成 live myself。
✗ I live myself
✓ I live by myself
、I live on my own 或者 I live alone。“我自己住”里的“自己”是“一个人”的意思，要用 by myself 或者 on my own。单独的 myself 是“自己”这个人或者“亲自”。
enjoy 后面空着。
✗ We enjoyed very much
✓ We enjoyed ourselves very much
。汉语“我们玩得很开心”不需要宾语，英语 enjoy 后面却一定要有：玩得开心就是 enjoy yourself。
发音
4 分钟两个动词之间的代词不重读，而且会弱化：

him、her 在句子中间时，开头的 /h/ 会消失——这是正常读法，不是马虎。重读的是两个动词，代词一带而过。
反身代词的重音在 -self 上： myself /maɪˈself/，yourself /jɔːˈself/，themselves /ðəmˈselvz/，ourselves /ˌaʊəˈselvz/。表示“亲自”的时候，还要用声音强调：I'll do it mySELF.
课文
5 分钟My first job was in a small café in Brighton when I was seventeen. The owner, Mrs Price, was very strict. She made us wear a white shirt every day, and she never let us use our phones behind the counter. She expected everyone to arrive ten minutes early, and if you were late, she made you stay ten minutes longer.
In the first week she wanted me to wash the dishes and nothing else. I was bored, so I asked her to let me make the coffee. "Not yet," she said. "I want you to watch Sam first." Sam was the oldest waiter, and he helped me learn everything: how to use the coffee machine, how to carry three plates at once, how to talk to difficult customers.
By the end of the summer I could run the café by myself on quiet afternoons. Once I burnt myself on the coffee machine, but I didn't tell anyone — I just held my hand under cold water and carried on.
On my last day Mrs Price made me a cake herself. "You've taught yourself a lot," she said. "Would you like me to write you a reference?" I still have it.

范例： At my first job, my manager expected me to answer every email the same day. She made me write reports every Friday, but she let me work from home on Mondays. She didn't let us eat at our desks, and she made everyone switch off their phones in meetings. She wanted me to learn the new software quickly, so I taught myself in the evenings. A colleague offered to help, but I wanted to do it on my own. In the end I could do most things by myself.
