În locul ei stau omul și to + verbul: I want you to call me. Modelul îl știi din vorbirea indirectă: asked me to wait (B1 #15), advised me to rest (B1 #16).

I want you to call me tonight. Vreau să mă suni diseară.
My parents wanted me to become a doctor. Părinții voiau să mă fac medic.
I'd like you to meet my sister.
Would you like me to help? Vreți să vă ajut?
We expect everyone to be on time.
I need you to sign here, please. Am nevoie să semnați aici, vă rog.
She doesn't want us to worry. Nu vrea să ne facem griji.

După verb pronumele stă în acuzativ: me, you, him, her, us, them. Negația se pune de obicei la want: I don't want you to go sună mai firesc decât I want you not to go. Would you like me to…? e o ofertă politicoasă de ajutor, „vreți să…?”, alături de Shall I…? (A2 #12).

A obliga, a lăsa, a ajuta: make, let, help.

The teacher made us rewrite the essay. Profesorul ne-a pus să rescriem compunerea.
That film always makes me cry. Filmul ăsta mă face mereu să plâng.
My parents let me stay up late at weekends.
Let me help you. Lăsați-mă să vă ajut.
Can you help me carry these boxes? Mă ajuți să duc cutiile astea? (= help me to carry)

Îl știi din Let's (A1 #16): Let's go e let us go, „lasă-ne să mergem”.

get + pe cine + to — a convinge, a obține. În conversația britanică e o formă foarte frecventă: I'll get Tom to fix it. — „Îl rog pe Tom s-o repare”. I couldn't get him to listen. — „N-am reușit să-l fac să asculte”. Spre deosebire de make, la get există to.

Compară — aceleași sensuri, dar altă formă:

They let us leave early. fără to
They allowed us to leave early. allow — tot „a permite”, dar cu to, mai oficial

La pasiv make primește to: We were made to wait for an hour. — „Am fost puși să așteptăm o oră”. let n-are pasiv; în locul lui vine be allowed to din B1 #11: We were allowed to leave early. — „Ni s-a permis să plecăm mai devreme”. Iese o pereche: They let us leave early — We were allowed to leave early.

I — myself we — ourselves
you — yourself you — yourselves (despre mai mulți)
he — himself, she — herself, it — itself they — themselves

Did you hurt yourself? — „Te-ai lovit?”. She taught herself Italian. — „A învățat singură italiana”.

I'll do it myself. — „O fac eu singur”. Did you make this cake yourself? The town itself is small, but the beaches are beautiful. — „Orașul în sine e mic…”.

by myself — „singur, fără alții; fără ajutor”: I live by myself. — „Locuiesc singur”. She built the website by herself. Același lucru înseamnă on my own: I did it on my own.

I washed and got dressed.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ I want he to come → ✓ I want him to come. După want — pronumele în acuzativ: him, nu he.

Verifică-te. Cum spui „Vreți să vă ajut?”? Ce nu e în regulă în She let me to use her car? Cum spui „Am reparat singur bicicleta”?

arată răspunsurile
Would you like me to help you?; după let verbul vine fără to: She let me use her car; I fixed the bike myself sau I repaired the bike myself.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

✗ I want that you call me → ✓ I want you to call me. ✗ Would you like that I open the window? → ✓ Would you like me to open the window? „Vreau ca tu să mă suni” se traduce cuvânt cu cuvânt, cu that în locul lui „ca”. După want și would like nu există un asemenea that.

2

to după make și let

„M-a făcut să aștept”, „nu mă lăsau să ies” → ✗ He made me to wait, ✗ My parents didn't let me to go out → ✓ He made me wait, My parents didn't let me go out. „Să” pare mereu to, iar want me to, ask me to, allow me to chiar îl au. make și let sunt excepțiile: reține-le.

3

myself la verbele reflexive

„Mă simt mult mai bine” → ✗ I feel myself much better → ✓ I feel much better.

4

leave în loc de let

„Lasă-mă să te ajut” → ✗ Leave me help you → ✓ Let me help you. I left my keys at home.

5

Pasivul de la let

„Am fost lăsați să plecăm mai devreme” → ✗ We were let to leave early → ✓ We were allowed to leave early.

want him to /ˈwɒnt ɪm tə/
made her wait /ˈmeɪd ə ˈweɪt/
let me help /ˈlet mi ˈhelp/

/h/ de la începutul lui him, her dispare în mijlocul frazei — asta e norma, nu neglijență. Accentuate sunt ambele verbe, pronumele dintre ele trece repede.

La pronumele reflexiv accentul cade pe -self: myself /maɪˈself/, yourself /jɔːˈself/, themselves /ðəmˈselvz/, ourselves /ˌaʊəˈselvz/. Când pronumele înseamnă „eu însumi”, e și scos în evidență cu vocea: I'll do it mySELF.

Text

My first job was in a small café in Brighton when I was seventeen. The owner, Mrs Price, was very strict. She made us wear a white shirt every day, and she never let us use our phones behind the counter. She expected everyone to arrive ten minutes early, and if you were late, she made you stay ten minutes longer.

In the first week she wanted me to wash the dishes and nothing else. I was bored, so I asked her to let me make the coffee. "Not yet," she said. "I want you to watch Sam first." Sam was the oldest waiter, and he helped me learn everything: how to use the coffee machine, how to carry three plates at once, how to talk to difficult customers.

By the end of the summer I could run the café by myself on quiet afternoons. Once I burnt myself on the coffee machine, but I didn't tell anyone — I just held my hand under cold water and carried on.

On my last day Mrs Price made me a cake herself. "You've taught yourself a lot," she said. "Would you like me to write you a reference?" I still have it.

Model

At my first job, my manager expected me to answer every email the same day. She made me write reports every Friday, but she let me work from home on Mondays. She didn't let us eat at our desks, and she made everyone switch off their phones in meetings. She wanted me to learn the new software quickly, so I taught myself in the evenings. A colleague offered to help, but I wanted to do it on my own. In the end I could do most things by myself.
